Haven't been able to listen to much here lately - busy flogging covers for the punters.

Just a little song.
All BIAB, except for some strings.

Gabrielle

©2014 Robert Randall Burke/BMI

Gabrielle lives in a cottage by the sea
Gabrielle isn't the girl she used to be
Gabrielle
When will the memory set you free
Gabrielle?

Gabrielle, now that the trees have turned to gold
Gabrielle, will you release the pain you hold?
Gabrielle, will you find shelter from the cold?
Gabrielle.

You can't live your life by living in the past
The morning sun can't penetrate the shadows sorrows cast
Open up your windows
Open up your heart
Your lines have all been written
You've got to play your part
Gabrielle.

Gabrielle lives in a cottage by the sea
Gabrielle isn't the girl she used to be
Gabrielle
When will the memory set you free
Gabrielle?

It’s all been said!

What a beautiful song with great lyrics, a strong backing track and a fantastic vocal that was perfectly mixed.

This is one great song.

Love the dark, minor mood and the way it works with the lyrics. Great vocal performance! Really good lyrics. They get the point and the mood across without over explaining-a little mystery is great. Love this! Take care. Greg

Great song. Nice job on the recording. I like that it stayed acoustic through out and was driven by a strong piano with backing strings to fill it in. I saw that there was additional tracks but I didn't hear them, and that is good. Piano, cello, and strings work well for this.

The vocals set well in the mix and have a good quality to them. They fit this nicely.

Loved the story in the song. She seems so sad and lonely. I'm curious, as to the event that made her that way. The lyric never gave a clue. To me, that's the key bit of info lacking in this story. A short bridge of a line or two could easily provide that key which would unlock and explain the reason Gabbie is like she is now. It could be from the death of a loved one, or spurned by a lover, etc....

I really like the song. Good job.

Like Greg alluded to and I've said it here before....don't tell me everything....let me connect a few dots....let me sink in the song and imagine what might have happened. And this songs works perfectly from that perspective. It adds an edge to the story. Yes many things could have lead to her fall but by stating the cause you run the risk of perhaps losing a listener who may not understand, disagree with, can't relate to, etc., etc., the reason for her fall. The way you've written it the listener can insert their feelings of what life might throw at them and result in a downfall.

OK, enough pontificating. The lyric is supported by a fine vocal/melody and wrapped up in a classy arrangement and mix. Well done!!

Hi Bob ...

It's been a while since we listened to you. This is wonderful! Sounds like a super soundtrack to us. The vocal is perfect and passionate and the instrument selection was perfect, as was the production.

We enjoyed this very much! Best to you ...

Janice & Bud,

I believe that some songs should be enigmatic. This is one of them. Funny thing, I wanted to sing it in French, but I don't speak French. grin
Thanks for the kind remarks.

Bob, I love the compelling melody in this song. I like the connect the dots aspect to song. Good mix and great emotive vocal. Nice job with the strings and cello. Very enjoyable listen. Thanks for posting, Tom

Oleman,

We've been very busy playing lately, so the recording thing has taken a back seat. Thanks for listening.

Bob,

Excellent. Love it. Very Jimmy Webb of you...

One listen and it stays with you. People have a tendency to overlook the fact that a memorable (or catchy) melody is every bit as important to writing as an interesting lyric. You never overlook that...

I like the mystery. I like the production - nice piano, nice subtle accordion. You sing with conviction.

An enjoyable listen, the instrumentation kept it interesting. I haven't used the accordion yet, I might have to sneak that in somehow. Nice production and mix, too.
Is there enough "story" here? I think for this genre/style, it is not as important as if it were a country tune or something like that. The words all "sound" good to me.
