Nice but I think the "horn section" comes on a little too strong at the beginning.
A lovely chord progression.

All around this is really great.
I do agree that the horns are perhaps a little too dominant at the start, (and perhaps in other places).
A great feel and vibe throughout.

Bottom line: Well done!

I enjoyed this one - it has a really good groove. It flows really well, with nice progressions.

Thanks for sharing smile

Very nice, I'd love to know how you did the horns. I mean the head, not the solo. Very well done, however you did it.

'Mr.BobaLew'...

A while ago I watched a music video featuring Ivan Lins performing one of his airborne, rhythmically and melodically unexpected and exciting 'new' bossa nova compostions. After the set ended, his bassist gave him a compliment, which was that his experience of playing his electric bass lines around Mr. Lins' chord progressions was like playing amongst and within all the spectrums of light from the Sun, in that Lins played in and among all the spaces on a given scale, or mode, diatonic to chromatic, which gave him a special pleasure in performing with him. I mean, the bassist had this big, bright, almost child-like smile on his face as he said those wonderful things! I've never forgotten his words.

I thought the bassist's comment about Lins' style was incredibly imaginative, unique and generous, and just happened to describe perfectly the character of his music. I heard the same adventurousness in your composition, Ask Me Later. It has 'wings' and a sense of freedom that keeps a listener looking at the musical horizon ahead in anticipation of where they'll be taken, where they'll land when the journey's over. It's also got as cool and sensuous a sound/vibe as one could ask for, or expect, in a bossa nova.

Obviously (or not), I really dug this piece. You're a truly welcome musical voice on this User's Forum, in my humble opinion.

This is not as complicated as it sounds.

I do all my tracking in Logic Pro X (LPX) which is a really solid product. LPX includes a set of sampled horns that I have used here. Your tracking software likely has something very similar.

After importing the really solid rhythm section from BIAB and setting the tempo to match, I create a track for a software instrument and assign a horn from the library. Then I simply play along with the rhythm section.

I repeat this for each additional instrument. In my opinion each horn track needs to be played individually rather than copied and pasted from another track. As with live performance, there are subtile variations from track to track that give it some humanity.

I am a bass player, but I was a woodwind player in the beginning. So I am familiar (not to say expert) with breathing and phrasing of horn lines and I try to make the midi sound 'breathed.'

Give it a try!

Thanks for the good words! I'm enjoying the liberty to experiment with harmony and shifting tonal centers that BIAB makes so easy.

Nice choice of bandmates and fun jam changes. Horns might be a bit loud for the mix, but they sound great. Your bass is perfect.

Enjoy whatever happens!

This is fantastic. I was trying to figure out what you were doing for the horns; but your later explanation had me saying "oh! Got it! Awesome!"

To me, this is a seriously great song. I would have completely thought it was all real musicians.

Well done!

Mr.BobaLew,

Very nice and airy composition. Maybe I am "minority" here, but I liked pronounced horns. Listens very well. Mix is A+
The only thing, I thought the ending was a little abrupt. Meaning, not musically, but it ends on a click, perhaps volume envelope? Thank you for sharing!

Misha.

Thanks, Bob a Lew, for the explanation! I was hoping you did it somehow with BIAB. My DAW evidently doesn't handle MIDI well. But I am too old and lazy to learn a new one. I keep trying, though, to do MIDI. Anyway, beautiful work!

Mr. Bobalew that was excellent MIDI work with those horns. They sounded real.

I have no issue with the horns' volume and in fact I think the mix is spot on.

Super song.

I love your tagline smile My first impression of the song is summed up in the word "masterful." Everything really works well, and you really did a great job in weaving the instruments together throughout the track. The quality and the expression in the horns is impressive. After reading some of your comments about how you constructed it, I was even more impressed - you've clearly got a great command of creating music with an array of instruments, and it shows. I hope you enjoyed creating it as much as I enjoyed listening to it.
