December 31, 2014 User Showcase Song - Looking From Where I'm At

Charlie Fogle contacted me and said that he had written a song using song titles that I had posted in the last year. He then asked if I would like to participate playing guitar and possibly singing.

What he didn’t realize was that I would hijack the whole thing. I originally wanted his vocals but I got caught up in it. His melody is untouched. I just tweaked a few lyrics and changed a few real tracks in his original SGU.

Needless to say I was very flattered that someone would take the time to do this and then include me. The outcome is that this provided me with a retrospective look at 2014. Thank you Charlie!

One more for Christmas

The challenge was a co-write with a friend, Walter Davidson (yep, he's 100 % Belgian). No Bridge, 4-bar chorus. I put the lyrics in, and used the new features of BIAB 2015 (Avery's strings) to keep the song going.

Had to set 140 Bpm to produce the two chords in the 4th time of the bar.

This update patch includes the following:
Improved: Save as video dialog. Codec selection now available. We recommend CVSM MS-CRAM (Windows Video codec), or "Auto" but you can choose different ones.
Fixed: Save As video now follows settings for no-lead in, and works correctly in fakesheet mode. Always renders Video as stereo now.
Fixed: Auto updates dialog, handles European date formats correctly.

December 19, 2014 User Showcase Song - Sausalito

This will probably be my last song posted this year. It has been a wonderful year of music sharing and thanks so much to all of you for your support, inspiration, and the wonderful music you've provided to the site this year. In Marin County, one of the most beautiful places in the US, is a little town on the bay called Sausalito. My dad used to have a sailboat there when I was young and the family would sail on the SF bay. I have always considered it a magical place. The first few lines for the chorus came to me while driving (as many ideas have). It turned out to be the same day my father-in-law died suddenly of a heart attack while dancing with his wife (I guess there's something to be said for dying while doing something you love). You may note in the lyrics where I sing "village square". It's supposed to be "Village Fair" which was a multi-story open-air market above the yacht harbor. By the time I realized the mistake, the vocal was done and I was happy enough with it. I decided it may be tricky to fix and that it still made sense, although technically less accurate. I can't access the tracks used by numbers (my old PC is flaking) but it is: 1) Liverpool piano, 2) ac gtr fingerpicking, Nashville?, and 3) B-3 organ. Not sure on the bass and the drums are ezdrummer Nashville EZX. Hope you enjoy the song. Comments encouraged.

assume you all get those bloody Cold calls on your house phone and this is my tribute to them. smirk
My first song with 2015.
I got the idea from LPMan and his use of a vocal recorded on the telephone. Brilliant idea as I thought laterally. An apt title by LPMan also Insane as this nearly drove me mad mad .

I had to answer every call on my house phone to get the vocals. All recorded on my Mobile/Cell phone and restored-ish in Soundforge

The Band-in-a-Box Version 2015 Build 412 update is a free update for every Band-in-a-Box 2015 for Windows user! Click here to download.
** Major feature added **
Save as Video. Now you can save your Band-in-a-Box song composition as a video, that you can upload to YouTube or work with in video programs. Just press the [Save as] button and choose 'Save as Video'. The 'video' portion is the chordsheet in Band-in-a-Box that shows the chords and a highlighted bar moving as the song plays. Song title and song info displays at the top of the window. For example, you can make a backing track for a cool chord progression, and upload it to YouTube for others to play along to. Do a visual transpose and upload a second version for Bb tenor sax players.

December 12, 2014 User Showcase Song - Stay a While

One of the things I like about upgrading to a new BIAB version is that it gets me digging through RealTracks (new and old), searching for new songs that may be hidden in them. For this one, I was playing with a style called =ROKJZEV and I really liked the feel of the song demo. So I started with that, changed some chords, re-arranged, added horns and (RT) lead guitar, and replaced the two MIDI tracks with RealTracks. Then I started scatting to that, and "Stay a While" was the result. Although the rest of the parts are Even feel, the RT bass is Swing feel, and it seems to work. Sounds good to me anyway. I was thinking of Al Green and Steely Dan while playing with this, FWIW. Dreaming of the big leagues.

December 11, 2014 User Showcase Song - La Nueva

This is my song La Nueva (The New), but is not new, is old, I recorded the song in the year 2000.
I create the song in Band in a box (I don´t remember the number of the version at that time) when BIAB was only midi.
I take the bass, piano and drums midis from BIAB and exported to Cubase for edition.
I add the guitar parts, and with my Casio midi guitar add the vibes and flutes parts.
The percussion is a mix from midi and loops.
At that times my "studio" was a Pentium Pc with 256 mg Ram and windows98. My soundcard was Soundblaster Live, with the Soundfonts useful sampler.
The Realtracks are an amazing progress on quality on BIAB,I love it, but I think we must remember how we can use midi with good results.

December 05, 2014 User Showcase Song - Hot Fudge Sundae - Nu Jazz

I hadn't intended on posting this but Brian Anderson posted a question about the versatility and breadth of BIAB. He said he was a big fan of Jazz Fusion. So I am posting this for Brain to listen to. He's considering it (BIAB) for purchase, is my impression.

Brian ... this is a hybrid of Nu Jazz and Jazz Fusion. I wrote this, recorded it and posted it in about three hours. That's how easy it is to use BIAB! It needs some tweaking yet, not completely "touched up". But, this might give you an idea of what you can do with BIAB in just a few hours once you become familiar with it.

December 03, 2014 User Showcase Song - Scotch and Cigarettes

Dear PG music community, this is a song inspired by a film, a particular scene in a film which I found very emotionally moving. Along with music, film is my favorite medium. When the two interact correctly (Cameron Crowe, Martin Scorsese), it can be emotionally orgasmic. I wrote this song after the film was out, decreasing my chances for placing it from 1/10,000,000 to zero (Oh well!). There are some issues with the mix (too bright, french horn too loud, strings too soft, too much reverb). Those are my clearest observations but I'd love to hear yours, and any other feedback you'd like to share. The piano is Liverpool piano, I will get the name of the bass, which I feel couldn't have worked better if played just for the track. Orchestra is a combo of East West Silver and Miroslav (changed formats in the middle of the song). Thanks for all your encouragement as of late.

December 02, 2014 Band-in-a-Box for Windows - Deleting content in PG 2014 and earlier HD's

Am house cleaning along with some backup's.
Not counting the 2015 drive winging its way home.
Methinks I have 3 other PG drives. Maybe only 2...
I do have the bonus CD/DVD's from years past.

Would like to delete content and use the PG HD's for quickie backups.

Is it safe to do this?
