October 30, 2015 Band-in-a-Box Saves the Day! A Customer Testimonial

Have you ever shown up for a gig only to have another band member not make it? Hey - it happens, and it's never a fun situation!

Forum user jazzsax keeps a backup of his Band-in-a-Box installation on him... and was able to put it to good use! Here's the story:

Yesterday I arrived at a luncheon gig where I was to play sax as a sideman in a trio. It seems the piano player went across town to the wrong venue and of course has no cell phone. After waiting around with no word from him for 10 minutes after we were supposed to begin playing, I mentioned to the lady in charge that I have my entire program, BIAB library, stored on my iPhone as a backup for when I do solo performances. Since I had played solo for this group several times before she did not hesitate in trying to find a PA to use.
I always carry a mic with me and once all the equipment was connected I proceeded to play for the hour alone. It was a fun, energetic and appreciative crowd.

October 28, 2015 Band-in-a-Box 2015 for Mac - New Update Available

A build 106 update patch is available for Band-in-a-Box 2015. (Released Oct 23, 2015)

Summary of fixes in build 106:
-Fixed: There is a grayed-out checkbox in Notation Options that doesn't do anything "Show fret #s on chord diagrams".
-Fixed: Rendering to AIFF or M4A from various places in the program might cause a crash.

Carm's Blues is a jam that JonD and I recorded. JonD is playing the B3 via his keyboard controllers, I am playing the guitar and bass while Band-in-a-Box, Style = DeepDry 1 - Slow Southern Blues, supplied the drums. All were recorded on their first pass.

October 27, 2015 The Pitch to MIDI Converter Feature in RealBand

RealBand includes a Pitch to MIDI Converter feature which will analyze a monophonic audio track and create an equivalent MIDI track. While this feature cannot recognize chords or mixes of music instruments, it gives the best results with single-note melody lines, played very cleanly with very little background noise or hum.

To try out this feature, highlight the Audio track within the Tracks window of the program and select Edit | MIDI | Pitch to MIDI and set the Conversion Parameters. Then choose the proper Audition Source and press the [Audition] button. To finish the procedure, choose [Process] and you'll have the MIDI track!

NOTE: We have never seen a Pitch To MIDI program which is absolutely perfect. With careful playing and proper settings, you can get good conversion on most played notes. But you can expect to get a few “off the wall” notes which need to be edited with the notation or list edit windows.

October 27, 2015 #TipTuesday - The Song Title Generator in Band-in-a-Box

If you're experiencing writers block when it comes to deciding on a title for your Band-in-a-Box song, don't forget about the Song Title Generation option!
In our Mac version, select Edit | Chords | Auto-Generate Song Title (or control+shift+S) and a song title will appear in the Title Window! Not happy with the result? Just repeat the process until the title is perfect for the song!

*this feature uses a file called 'titl.txt' which you can edit to personalize with your favorite words, making the titles generated even more unique!*

There's also an option within the Melodist feature to have a title generated for the song - in fact, the Melodist is a great way to have the program compose parts (or all) of a song for you! With options to generate Chords, an Intro, Insert Bass Pedals, Generate Melody, Solo in Middle Chorus and Allow Style Changes within the song - you can select a few of these or all of these; it's up to you!

October 26, 2015 User Showcase Song - 1957

I wanted to write a song about my oldest sister Julia before she lost her battle with cancer. I spent a couple of hours with her asking a lot of questions about her past to try and come up with an idea. After our conversation I realized that her happiest time in life appeared to be her teen years. This inspired me to write about her senior year in high school when she and a friend spent some time decorating the gym for their senior prom dance. I started writing the song in November 2014 and I was glad that I had finished the complete song by the end of November for Julia died the week after Christmas 2014. I have attached her senior year picture taken in 1957.

We were doing some research online the other day, and came across a review of Band-in-a-Box Version 9!

This review immediately caught the attention of our Marketing Representative Callie - probably because it compared Band-in-a-Box to Star Trek.

"There is an episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation in which one of the characters walks onto the holodeck and programs his musical fantasy simply by commanding, "1950s New Orleans jazz, small combo." The computer instantly generates a holographic combo that appears and starts playing. The character then picks up his trombone and commences to jam along with the computer-generated trio.
Science fiction? Maybe not. PG Music's Band-in-a-Box 9.0 offers a similar experience in the here and now."

October 21, 2015 User Showcase Song - Get Up and Funkit Too

Guess I'm stunk in a Funk!
I'm not sure about the tracks. I rarely save the Biab files just the waves. The vocal loops and horns were from Logic Pro9. There are 2 different drummers playing at the same time, their beats were almost the same except for the fills. I played the rhythm and lead guitars.

This is a song about the feeling when you fall in love. There are a lot of live overdubs, but the rhythm section is BB. The BB violin and mandolin didn't make it through the mix, there was a lot of modification in the arrangement and editing in the length. The solo guitar is from RB, chosen lick by lick from the multiriff option. The RB memo is under the BB memo.

Here's a slight remix of one of the tunes from my Dang, this stuff is tough! thread

I can't say that I hear much of a difference, though (ha, ha). There are still a few places where the lead vocal blends in a bit. I also don't care for the sound of the intro at the moment.

It looks like I posted the original here way back in 2010 (and the mix is quite different from then!). One intrepid listener chimed in back then (always appreciated!). This was before the User Showcase section was even added.

Did you know... If you save a track as a "Performance File," you can send it your friend, who will be able to play it without needing to have the RealTracks installed.

To save the track, right-click on the instrument button and select "Save Track as Performance File."

October 06, 2015 User Showcase Song - In the Pink (A Tribute)

Dear forum friends, this is really more of a parody than a tribute-too silly for a tribute. But I had a lot of fun doing it. I think it is remarkable demonstration of the power of BIAB, much more than anything I did. I enjoy listening to those players "jam". It's all BIAB except the arpeggio (I guess that would be the description) synth chords which were done with a plugin (spacing on the name). I will post the RTs later. Comments always encouraged! October 05, 2015 User Showcase Song - Monday

We've been away for a little while.
I have been busy moving to a new place in a different location. A small village quite nearby Anne-Marie's place :-)
Besides that, we just got back from a holiday to Berlin.
Here's the new contribution to the forum. It's a solo project I created some months ago:

MONDAY

The basis of the song was created in ChordPulse, the following BIAB RT's were added:

The video is a combination of lyric screen recordings (which took me ages to sync properly) and Dani Millán's wonderful skater footage.
I compiled everything in MoviePlus X5.

October 01, 2015 User Showcase Song - Optimistic Blues

The whole project was completed from start to finish in PowerTracks.
This is a song by one of my more "mature" students Peter, who asked if I would post the link as he hates computers! It's unusual for the forum in that it's all recorded into Powertracks without using any form of click track or metronome. Peter came to us to see if he could sing, but he's also sharpening up his guitar work whilst he's here. This is his first song and he's playing the Dobro rhythm guitar and singing. After that, we played in kick drum and hi-hat samples live from the keyboard to match his timing fluctuations. Next, the bass was added by Jack, who at 11 is at the other end of our student age range. Not an easy task, matching the tempo without a full drum track. Finally, I added a bit of lead guitar. Because there was no click track, nothing could be copied-pasted and everything had to be played from start to finish, just like the old days.

So here it is - very few tracks used and very little in the way of effects.
