November 25, 2015 User Showcase - FIRST SONG - Harmony In My Heart

I am new to this forum. I had composed a simple melody and made it a full song by using BIAB. The title of the song is "Harmony in my heart" because the melody came out of my heart so naturally and smoothly.

I think its genre is Orchestral Pop.

The melody track is from me and all the rest are from BIAB. The styles used are as follows.

From measure 1 to 34: 128ORK.STY
From measure 35 to 66: ARPEGGIO.STY
From measure 67 to 82: CAREY128.STY

After completed the song by BIAB, I transferred it to Sonar X3 and made some more arrangement such as;

assignment of five different instruments out of Rapture Pro to the melody track,

assignment of Rapture Pro instruments to all the other MIDI tracks.

I hope you like the song and please give me any feedback if you think it deserves.

Note: This song was originally posted to 'muzie' (Japanese site). I have made significant enhancement to it and posted it to 'Songcloud' so that I can make it available outside Japan.

Now a folder opens after copying to drop box, Drag Drop or another folder.

November 20, 2015 Making Medleys with Band-in-a-Box

RealTracks Medleys are special groups of RealTracks that play in sequence. This tutorial shows you how to make your own medleys with the RealTracks feature in Band-in-a-Box: youtu.be/xzJBMmyCzoU

When it comes to Medleys, we don't stop there! With a previous release of Band-in-a-Box Version 2008 for Windows, we added a feature called the Medley Maker. This feature is great tool if you are wanting to make a medley of various songs you've created with Band-in-a-Box!

Inside the Medley Maker, which is accessed through the Song Form [AABA] button (the one with the pencil), simply select the songs that you want, and Band-in-a-Box will make the medley for you. A medley is not simply joining songs together - a good medley uses a "transition" area between songs to introduce the new style, key, and tempo. The Medley Maker automatically creates a nice transition area for you, writing in chords that would smoothly transition to the next song, style, key, and tempo!

November 19, 2015 User Showcase Song - There's Evil In You Chillun

BTW, for our international friends “chillun” is Deep South USA for children smile

Janice and I left our bluegrass band in 2003 and for nearly 10 years we rarely picked up our instruments or recorded. Since we had both retired in 1999 we had more things we were interested in than gigging (mountain biking, hiking and kayaking). But we continued to listen to music of many genres over the years. Three years ago I stumbled into BiaB after buying an iMac, noodling around with Garageband that came on it and getting interested in its recording capabilities. That (and some googling) lead me to PGMusic.

BiaB offered us a chance to ease back into making music and explore new genres. Our first posts here on the User Forum in 2012 were rehashes of our bluegrass writes. A public domain tune, Evil Chillun, was our first real venture away from bluegrass into another genre — Western Swing for that tune. And, the response it received (three years ago this month) on this forum was what put us on the Americana journey that we continue to travel.

I recently revisited the song and decided to reconstruct it with the original vocal track. Hopefully I’ve learned a bit more about the use of Biab, mixing and mastering over the last three years.

Evil Chillun is from the very early Western Swing tune period when a “sock rhythm” acoustic guitar and/or mandolin provided a lot of the upbeat on top of a minimalist drum kit. Also it was typical that the upcoming soloist would play pretty hot under the vocalist leading up to the solo. We tried to incorporate all of this.

So….here’s the new version. And many thanks to PGMusic and this great community for putting us on this three year adventure and for all of the support. Pardon the ramble and your time to listen is always appreciated!

Dedicated to the memory of our best friend and mentor RANDY HOWARD 12 time National Fiddle Champion and much, much more. He tore this stuff up. RIP.

November 18, 2015 Emailing Your Band-in-a-Box Song

One of the many new features we added with Band-in-a-Box 2015 for Mac was the "Email Song as Attachments" feature, which will come in handy - we promise!

The Email Song dialog allows you to choose what files you want to email:
- the song (.MGU or .SGU)
- the style (.STY)
- the extended style (.STX) (if any)
- a rendered audio file (choice of AIFF, M4A, WAV)
- Audio track (if any)
- Performance track (if any)
Pressing the [Send Email] button will launch your default mail application and prepare a new message with files attached.

You can also email a Drop station file. After you drag a track button to the Drop station, right-click on the Drop station and select the Email the drop station file menu item.

November 18, 2015 User Showcase Song - Waiting For The Reaper Man

I hope there is room for one more "Life is hard and then you die" blues song smile I don't usually like blues style of music, though I make blues songs that mock at blues. This song however had a title first and it needed a blues song around it. Maybe also the chilly autumn gave an important ingredient to the lyrics. And Band-in-a-box had the right instruments to finalize that idea.

I saved the video from BIAB, mixed the song in Adobe Audition and replaced the original audio track with that mix. I used keying to let my autumn footage shine through the BIAB background.

November 17, 2015 #TipTuesday - Generate a SoundTrack in Band-in-a-Box!

If you need to generate original, royalty free music for a project (home video, slide show, ceremonies, dance routines, etc.) you should check out the SoundTrack option in Band-in-a-Box! It only takes a few seconds to generate an audio clip!

Go to Window | Generate SoundTrack to access this feature. Here you can choose a genre, style variation, which tracks to include (Bass, Piano, RealDrums), a desired duration (if one is required), whether to include a drum count-in, and more!

Once the song is generated, if you like what you hear you can save the SoundTrack as either a .WAV, .WMA, .MP3, .MP4 or .M4A file!

This feature was added to Band-in-a-Box for Windows with Version 2007.

November 10, 2015 #TipTuesday - The "K Quick Copy Method" in Band-in-a-Box

You can speed up song entry in Band-in-a-Box by typing "K" at any bar (followed by Enter key)? This command instantly copies the last 8 bars to the current position. Plus, by adding additional keys in the K command, you can customize this shortcut (e.g. typing K12,3 would copy from bar 3 for 12 bars to current position).

For example, if you're entering a song that has a repeating section of chords for 8 bars, type in the first 8 bars of chords and then move to bar 9, and then type "K" followed by the Enter key.

The last 8 bars will be copied to bar 9-16, and the cursor will be moved to bar 17, so you're ready to continue with the tune. If you get to bar 25, and would like the chords from 1-8 to be copied to 25-32, type k,1 and this will copy 8 bars from bar 1 to bar 25.

Note: The chords always get copied. The Melody, Soloist, and Lyrics also get copied if these items are set in the Copy Chords and / or Melody dialog (Edit | Copy From.. To..).

November 09, 2015 User Showcase Song - Worried Bout My Heart

Here's a track I made back around 1992 or 93. I used BIAB and Cubase on an Atari ST. All the sounds are from synth modules. Drums are Alesis and synths are Yamaha TXs and Roland Keyboard. I forget the model.
All recording was done onto a Fostex 8 track, mixed down to another reel to reel using a Mackie 1604 board.
The guitars are me playing my American Standard Tele and the Lead is a 52 Reissue Tele I had at the time. I recorded them direct using a Sansamp box. The effects are from Alesis Quadraverbs. I used an Orange Squeezer compressor on the guitars. I recorded the vocals using an AT 4050?
I remember doing a lot of editing on the drum tracks. I remember at the time I thought it was awesome to be able to edit drum tracks that way.
P.S. I wish I could remember what biab styles I used back then. lol
Sorry for the long post, but I figured I' give as much detail as I can remember. I took this off a cassette tape, EQed and recorded it using Powertracks.

November 06, 2015 User Showcase Song - Life's Short

I helped a friend with some songs years ago just after RealTracks came out, recorded a video with just a few HD Cams, mixed it up and sent it in to CMT and it was played on air. It was made straight out the Box so to speak with _CBGE_PD.STY just regenerated the pedal parts to fit in RB.
He was using Magix Studio and told me it was the best ! I said Dude forget Magix !
So just another sample of what can be done with this incredible program.

November 04, 2015 User Showcase Song - I Became Elvis

One morning in the studio Daniel ask me what we would be working on and I handed him some lyrics. I said this is a song that I had and idea for and that it would be a fun song. He took a look at the lyrics and started laughing and I said see I told you it would be a fun song and Daniel replied I wasn’t laughing because it is a fun song but seriously the title is "I Became Elvis". I said yes, and that is who I want you will be this morning. It doesn’t have to be a perfect Elvis but just that it appears to be him. You only have to be Elvis on the chorus and be yourself on the verses. After a few times of me teaching him the first verse Daniel said lets do it (he is a very quick learner). We always record the verses first, the chorus second and then any background vocals if needed. After completing the verses, I sang the chorus for him and then we started recording and…well I guess you’ll just have to hear it for yourself.

Did you know… If you've purchased Band-in-a-Box 2013 or higher you have a folder called "Artist Performances" that includes some great resources for learning-from-the-Pros!

This folder includes Artist Performance tracks that have audio (stretchable to any tempo), notation, on-screen guitar, and guitar tab!

When you open one of these files the Artists Performance will be on the Melody track; the file showcases the Band-in-a-Box RealTracks demos playing along to the featured artist performing the melody.

These performances play the melody (2 choruses), and 2 choruses of solo (first chorus "simple" solo, 2nd chorus advanced).

November 02, 2015 Video - Using Direct Input RealTracks for Custom Sounds

Did you know that there are over 250 "Direct Input" Guitar & Bass based RealTracks?

With these Direct Input RealTracks you can customize the RealTracks by generating clean tracks inside Band-in-a-Box, and then inside your DAW (GarageBand, Logic etc.), generating amp and pedal F/X using the Guitar Amp Simulator that is included (AmpliTube CS) with Band-in-a-Box.

I've been in prisons twice.

The first time was the State Correctional Institution at Rockview (Pennsylvania).
Our summer baseball league (high school age) was invited to play an exhibition for the inmates.
I have two distinct memories from that day.
1 - Our pitcher had walked two in a row and one of the inmates yelled "Stick a fork in him! He's done!"
It was the first time I had heard that expression. I thought he meant it.
2 - We had lunch with the prisoners.
It was the worst meal I've ever had in my life - to this day.

My 2nd time was the Hillsborough Juvenile Detention Center (Tampa, FL).
1977. I was doing solo gigs in bars at the time and was asked by a women's group to come entertain at the Center for their semi-annual visit there.
It was a good night - the guys there were very appreciative and we had fun.
They loved singing along to "The Lion Sleeps Tonight"....and "Runaway"...
But the thing I remember most about that night was when a guard walked through about halfway through the show.
The place got so quiet you could have heard the proverbial pin drop.
The change was dramatic. And a bit frightening.

This song is about that night.
