November 30, 2017 RealBand® 2018 is Here!

With the release of Band-in-a-Box® 2018 comes a brand-new RealBand® 2018 with over 50 new features, including:

Built-in Audio Chord Wizard detection in Chords Window ([Reinterpret Chords] button) will automatically detect the chords of the song, based on the audio data from all non-muted audio tracks. This works similar to the standalone Audio Chord Wizard, except that it uses the current bar lines of the existing song.

Windows Audio (WASAPI) driver format support. This allows for low latency audio recording/playback without requiring ASIO. Note: this supports 1 stereo input plus 1 stereo output at a time. For multiple inputs/outputs, you should continue to use either MME or ASIO.

X/8 time signature support - This a special method of displaying 6/8, 9/8,or 12/8 time signatures in the notation windows. If loading in a file one of these time signatures, RealBand will offer to convert the song to either 4/4 or 3/4 (in a way which won't affect how the timing of the song is heard, because we treat the 8th notes as triplets (40 ticks at a PPQ of 120) and not straight 8ths (60 ticks)) and then automatically set the notation window to display the song the corresponding x/8 format (either 6/8 split or 12/8 if the song was converted to 4/4, or 9/8 if the song was converted to 3/4). Note: 6/8 is displayed by splitting a larger 4/4 bar into two 6/8 bars. The reason this works is that an x/8 song is made up of 8th note triplets and not straight eighths. So, a 4/4 bar that as 3 eighth note triplets per beat (three 40 tick notes at 120ppq) sounds the same as a bar of 12/8 notation or the same as two bars of 6/8 notation.

To celebrate it, Piapro, the developer of Miku planned the 10th anniversary song contest. This song is an entry for that contest. Prize-winning works are currently being screened now. November 20, 2017 User Showcase Song - Even If You Walk Away

No B side this time, I don't wanna distract from this song.

If anyone is interested, I put this together in EZ Keys, wrote the lyrics, worked out the arrangement and moved the wave file into my DAW. Decided that I wanted other instruments so I composed the complete song in BIAB, then pulled the bass, a guitar, and drums into the DAW. It lined up almost perfectly, cut the guitar (sounded like clutter to me) replaced the drummer with a Logic drummer (more laid back) and thought that it sounded complete. I love the silences allowing things to breathe.

I don't wanna be a great sound engineer or producer tho. When I grow up I wanna be a songwriter. Thanks for listening and commenting.

November 15, 2017 User Showcase Song - Only What She Wants To

This might be a trifle heavy for some. Best avoided if you're of a
nervous disposition!

It's actually a co-write with our son Neil. It started out with just drums in Realband - RD Hip Hop at 84 bpm. Neil came up with the basic guitar bed and I copied it on bass. Next, we generated lots of drum fills and dropped them into the track - think Ginger Baker, Keith Moon! Where we couldn't get exactly the fill we wanted, to blend with the rhythm bed, we edited the individual beats, still within Realband and finally we dropped the pitch of the drum track by three semitones to give it more power.

Neil supplied the lead on the intro and I contributed the solo and some ornamentation at the end. At this stage, I realised that the key Neil had started in was going to push the vocal either a bit high, or very low, but there was no way round that and as we wanted it to sound more like AC/DC than Chris Rea we went for the high one. So here it is. From start to finish in Realband. It's best if you can play it LOUD.

Like the great feedback recently posted by Al-David:
"I write and play in quite a few different genres. The flexibility BIAB gives me makes transpositions, from one genre to another, so easy and quick. A number of times I've created a piece, intending it to be a Smooth Jazz or Smooth RnB song. But when I generated the song, it just didn't work in the intended genre.

With a simple click of the Style Picker ... BAM! The song ended up as a pretty decent Pop song. I only had to replace a couple of instruments from the new style and alter a couple of chords..."

November 09, 2017 User Showcase Song - Cool Mahn

I don't always use BIAB in my final tracks, so this, I believe, is only the second composition that I post here.

Part of the beauty of BIAB is the ability to try things that you might not ordinarily try. Like a reggae tune perhaps. Sometimes when I compose I like to think of doing a mash-up with a couple different artists that I like. In this case I was thinking a little bit along the lines of Steely Dan's "Haitian Divorce" and Brian May's stacked, harmonized guitar lines. So I previewed some reggae styles and ended up with this one, entered my chords and arrangement, and dragged tracks into Logic Pro. There I recorded the rhythm guitar and four lead guitar parts after speeding the tempo up from 75bpm to 80bpm.

November 03, 2017 User Showcase Song - Any Other Day

I wrote this just for the heck of it - not for any particular opportunity or reason other than I wanted to. Although I've written quite a few, I hadn't written a piece of film music in quite some time. It features trumpet and jazzy-bluesy piano taking the lead. My biggest concern is if the strings are too loud - I tend to do that sometimes.

The piano solo and intro is a BIAB midi track. This is the best I've ever got a midi acoustic piano to sound. I was very happy with that.

The trumpet is very temperamental! I tried to even out the volume fluctuations with compression and track adjustments, but never got it as smooth and even as I wanted. I tried a third compression on it but that took away too much of the trumpets character. So I left it alone after track adjustments (lowering and raising the trumpet volume in various individual bars) and 2 mild compressions.
