Another story song. 10 years ago my pal Mike LeBlanc told me there was a flowering Hibiscus shrub called a "Confederate Rose". Named apparently because it changes colour from white to red before it fades and dies and reminded folks of the field dressings on the battlefield. He suggested it would make a song so I wrote this: Sorry I can't list the original tracks as they have disappeared into cyberspace. https://on.soundcloud.com/c6VvcConfederate Rose © Vic Arnold & Mike Leblanc 2013 V1 In a corner of this battlefield a pretty flower shines My eyes are drawn from shot and shell that pounds our staggering lines I see the rifle aimed at me between the blossoms fair We fire together him and I and close our eyes in prayer V2 The battle rages through the day. We cause the foe to run. We catch our breath and walk around to see what we have done. I come across the hedge of flowers splashed with crimson stain The young boys eyes are closed. He'll never open them again. Ch. Confederate rose changes her clothes and turns from white to red. She soaks up the blood that runs like a flood Through this valley of the dead Inst. as verse 2 lines V3 The autumn comes around again and to this valley, I Now gold and yellow leaves have covered where that young man died I place a white bloom on his grave and pay the tribute due to my brother who was dressed in grey when I was dressed in blue Br. Mama died of broken heart but forgave me I suppose. And Daddy still tends the garden and that old confederate rose. Ch. Confederate rose changes her clothes and turns from white to red. She soaks up the blood that runs like a flood Through this valley of the dead Tag She forgives me I suppose, and you confederate rose.

Hi Vic ...
Quite a song! Sad, for sure, but so nicely performed. This is one of my favorite vocals by you.
When I lived in Bakersfield, California in the 1990s, we had 4 Hibiscus plants, one of which was a Confederate Rose. I didn't know the history of the name until I read your blurb - thanks for the info! The blooms only last for a day or two, but new blooms take their place very quickly.
Anyway, I really enjoyed this! You did a nice job on it!!!
Alan.

Thanks Al. The vocal is 10 years younger. Not quite so much croak as nowadays. Vic

Vic...this is a masterpiece! you are so talented at storytelling...and this is one of your best...love the track...the fiddle is obviously the perfect instrument to tell a Civil War tale with (just ask Ken Burns)...the inspiration (the flower) and your take on it is inspiring...just a stellar job of writing and composition!

So here's an interesting story about this song and recording... When you posted this ten years ago you mentioned that you wished you knew someone who could do a fiddle part for it. So I figured out the chords and entered them into BIAB and created the fiddle part and sent it to you to mix in. As I recall that was your introduction to BIAB and how you ended up here. A small world. BIAB bringing it together.
A nice song. Pleasant vocals. An Amazing program.

Well done. I was a little worried when I read the title. Interesting analogy too. The symbolic poppy of Armistice Day, ANZAC Day & the ilk is a similar analogy with the red representing, to some folk, blood and the dark centre a bullet wound along with its proliferation once the mud of the killing fields had time to settle and allow growth. Sad story of a sad story really well performed & written.

This is really well done. Great writing. And the mix is good.
Loved the story you told.

I think it's the first time I heard "masterpiece", Firesong. It has a nice ring. I listened to Ken Burns' series a few years ago. Thank you.

Excellent song. Very good vocal. You sing the story well and provide the right amount of emotion in the vocal.

Hi Ray. You got me guessing as to why you were worried but I’m glad you approved. Thanks also for the poppy info. Maybe another song in the making.

Man, you are so good at story songs, Vic. So very good. Compassion in your vocals and understanding in your lyrics. And you tell them in such a creative way. Excellent band. Love the fiddle. A sad song that is relatable regardless of the battle or the war.
