Hotter Than HadesAfter Floyd listened to my song "Longing For The Lotus" (using the new Asian RTs in BIAB 2024), he kind of challenged me to create and post something using the new Metal tracks in BIAB 2024. It's a genre I seldom listen to, but how do you back down from a "Floyd Challenge"? You don't - that's how. So, I went to YouTube and listened to 20 -25 Heavy Metal tracks. Using that questionable research, I selected one of the new Metal Styles and used most of the indigenous tracks (Switched out the drums and found a Lead Guitar track from the new offerings and ended up with this. I had a little more than two hours to put all of this together. I came in at two hours and eleven minutes from the first keystroke on the chord input sheet to this "finished cut" on Soundcloud. If it sounds crappy, don't laugh - send money so I can afford a few lessons about Heavy Metal song creation and performance. Donations through "Alan Pay" accepted 24/7. Okay, you can laugh, too. Here ya go, Floyd - have sat it! Hey, Alan! Wow, hats off to you for boldly going after this. Not my genre either, but you seem to have captured the essence of what I think of as metal. Very cool progression, just the right amount of repetition. The mix sounds good, too. That solo wore me out, but maybe that's the way it's supposed to be. Very cool excursion. Congratulations!
FWIW, last metal album I listened to was Paranoid (1970). When it was new...

Alan, I think you have captured something very cool here. It sounds like all those AM stations in the 70s playing that underground heavy rock / metal. Great gritty mix as well. Now I want to hear you sing over it! Bob

HA! I knew you'd take that challenge - and knew you'd do a good job of it. 20-25 Metal songs must have been an education! Always a good thing to expand your musical knowledge You soloist is Wild (it's there in his name). I was surprised at how "sedate" the other guitars are (I have not delved into the BIAB Metal tracks). I can't even give an opinion on the mix because I am not familiar enough with the genre to "know". Bob wants to hear you Sing over it. That would be another cool thing to hear. An aside (meaning not about your song - apologies) I actually wanted to hear what you would do with this. I listen to a new album almost every day - always from Apple's Country category. The range of "what is Country" has exploded. There is SO MUCH good music out there these days. The record that I listened to 3 days ago was a Country Metal album. It was surprisingly good. Metal sounding band (much like your backing track here) and a Country vocal. I thought I might give that a try. You were my canary.

Oh, so very well done, Alan. I can tell it's a great metal song with all the genre has to offer because I could only make it as far as 1:04. I challange you to STOP researching Metal, and I beg you not to try polkas. Still, I heartily applaud your effort.

That solo guitar track is pretty wild. This is a nice hard rocker.
I wouldn't call that metal.... but it's certainly hard rock. Metal is a bit different. But to someone who doesn't know the genre....and it's many subgenres.... not a bad first shot. The trick to getting this genre right is to listen closely to the chord progressions being used by the ones who create this genre of music.
I have a buddy who plays in a "sludge metal" band.... I can't hardly stand to listen to that for very long..... A lot of drop D and other strange tunings are used. The vocals are a whole different story as well.
You can find my music at: www.herbhartley.comAdd nothing that adds nothing to the music. You can make excuses or you can make progress but not both. The magic you are looking for is in the work you are avoiding.

Al, you headbangers and your wild shredding guitars and pounding drums are taking over the forum Now all you need to do is to start screeming singing, get leather pants and jacket, many face piercings, and a ton of tattoos and you will be good to go Seriously you did a good job on this one. Great mix. Merry Christmas

I (Bud) passed through about every phase of popular music from the early 60's to present but I detoured when it came to disco and metal. So I'm totally unschooled but it sounded like hard edgy late 70's-early 80's rock to me. Something I did listen to!
So my head is not bleeding after listening ... a good thing!
Cool experimentation Al.

J&B Good Evening, You Two, Thanks for the listen and comments. I agree about the heavy metal - long hair - etc. - . I did listen to Disco and pretty much liked it. Floyd's challenge was to use the BIAB 2024 tracks for the song - this is what I found, so assumed it to be heavy metal as the style indicated as such. That's all I had to go on. The numerous songs I listen to on YouTube in preparation didn't sound a lot like this, but it was as close as I could manage. Uh ... I don't recommend listening to 20+ head-banging songs in one sitting (or any other time), as the headache will stay with you after half a bottle of Ibuprofen and six hours of sleep! Thanks for dropping in to listen. Merry Christmas, Alan & Di

I, too, have no criteria suitable for "judging" this. It's just what i came up with. Be cautious with your future challenges - you know I'd have to respond. Uh - no, it would not be a good thing to hear me sing over this. My otherwise "normal" singing has inspired a few listeners to pray for deafness. I need to start listening to more country. I kinda got away from it. But it's my roots and a real nice money-maker for me for many years. I like most country music all the way back to Bob Wills and Hank Thompson up to as few years ago. I need to get back to it more often. Glad to hear a was your canary. It's a good feeling to give someone a little inspiration via one's own efforts. Merry Christmas to you and yours, Alan & Di

Well, I don't use any of the strange tunings - it just sounds like the strange ones that shouldn't exist. Thanks for acknowledging the effort. I appreciate that. Hope you and your loved ones have the best Christmas ever. Alan & Di

I spent 23 years and 23 days in the Army - don't have a single tattoo. But I have a lot of wrinkles that make up for it! And nope - no screaming over the noise. I had a serious injury to my larynx close 20 years ago. Couldn't even talk for several months - I think that triggered the suggestion for a national holiday! i could actually sing pretty decently back then - had an upper baritone voice. Ah - the good ole days! Thanks again for dropping in and leaving some enjoyable words! Wishing you and yours a wonderful Christmas, Alan & Di

Hi Alan. Wow! That made me sit up and pay attention. Metal music is a genre that I am completely inept at. I'm as far away from my musical comfort zone as I can possibly be with this genre. All that said, you entertained and and kept my attention Who knows, maybe you've opened a door to a whole new world for me! Thank you for sharing your work. I always love hearing what you compose. May good things come your and Di's way! --Noel P.S. And I agree. How could anyone turn down one of floyd's challenges.

Hi David, I'm no expert on any kind of metal except pig iron. It's just oinked-up steel. There - a full synopsis of my knowledge of metal. Well, it's my belief it is firmer than warm butter. Whichever place I end up, I'll send back a report on the temp! Either way, I doubt a parka and gloves will be mandatory items. I'm not familiar with the article, but I might check it out. My degree is in physics with an emphasis on the physics of light. That really helped my musical career! Uh, well, maybe not. But, on the other hand, I can play in the dark or in the light, so maybe ... Glad you enjoyed the experience. You can ignore the other bull I wrote. Happy New Year. Alan & Di
