Ascension is a synth that comes with over 1700 presets. I purchased it last night and found a number of presets that I liked. I also found many that I didn't care for but that is just personal taste. What takes this over the top for me was the sound creation features. I am not a sound creator by any means but last night I easily came up with a few that I did like. For only $4.90 USD this is a no-brainer IMHO. It is for both a Mac and PC. Hey Mario, thanks for sharing. I watched a couple of the videos there and learned a lot about plugins. I was particularly impressed by its Arpeggiator.
I consider myself plugin-illiterate so here are my newbie questions.
This Ascension "synth" plugin (which seems more that just a synth since it has percussion and bass) seems geared toward electronic dance music if I'm not mistaken.
I also notice that it has a rudimentary chord progression capability?
Are you aware of a similar plugin geared towards Progressive Rock (Pink Floyd, Yes) or Jam Band (Grateful Dead, Phish) or Smooth Jazz (Rick Braun, Colors in Motion)?

I also notice that it has a rudimentary chord progression capability? Hi Steve, yes a lot of demos these days are aimed at EDM, however Ascension is a digital version of an analog synth. Thus it an be used in any genre, you just have to find the right patches. Remember when Wendy Carlos used an analog synth for playing classical music? IMHO the patches themselves are worth the $5.00. Are you aware of a similar plugin geared towards Progressive Rock (Pink Floyd, Yes) or Jam Band (Grateful Dead, Phish) or Smooth Jazz (Rick Braun, Colors in Motion)? I don't recall seeing any plug-ins aimed at any band or genre. There are MIDI files that are but you have to provide the sounds. The best way would be to study the band or genre and pickup sound patches that would emulate their instruments. Getting those patches may involve getting a number of VSTs. Then you have to emulate each instrument for said band or genre: BiaB is your best friend for this task! Also don't forget Progressive Rock can have a few different time signatures, some BiaB can't do right now. I hope this helps. {edit} - I forgot to add that yes analog synths did have bass and drum patches, thus so do the digital emulations of analog synths.

Pretty much every synth I've ever tried had some sounds I like, and other sounds that were definitely for other musicians than me.

for that price, you're right.... No Brainer. If I use it one time.... it pays for itself.
edit: and when I bought it, they gave me a credit of $22.45 to use towards something else on their site.... very nice deal.

This is geared at analog synth sounds, including basses, drums, and keys. You can get better sounding horns in an old Yamaha DX7!
