We are working with our friend and music partner PeterF on an EP release of six cover songs. Something we have long wanted to do. I thought perhaps some folks might our process of interest. It turned out that our platform distributor, DistroKid, will handle ALL of the licensing for cover songs including making payments to the owners.

And the cost? 12 bucks a year for a song. And what do we have to do? Well, check the "cover song" option box when making our distribution. smile That's it. Hugely easier than back when we had to acquire mechanical licenses for each tune. Somebody may know of a cheaper means of licensing but for us this zero hassle method is amazing.

And for likely the oldest guy on the forum I gotta say I'm down with this streaming thing ... actually have been for years!

Great, Bud. Thanks.

Somewhat along the same line that may be useful info for people here is the website Arrangeme.com which has made arranging songs for performance easier. I do all the arranging for my chamber orchestra (using BIAB heavily). If the song is listed on Arrangeme.com among five million (!) titles, it means I can upload my arrangement and buy it from myself, to make the performance legal.

I know I'm not the oldest here, but are you older than MarioD?

smile smile Hmmmm...I don't know his age but I'll be 79 in a couple of months. I'd be delighted to not be the oldest guy here as I seem to invariably be the oldest when around folks who share our interest in hiking and mountain biking!

I think the contest is close but you may be the older one. Give Mario a shout. I've met Mario; he came to one of my concerts. Great guy.

Sorry old man but you are a lot older than me! I'll be 79 next April!
I know I have to respect my elders! But even if you were younger than me I would still respect you!

Like I told Dr. Dan once: get off my lawn.

While I've played professionally for 63 years, I'm only 73. Ok, I defer to you guys.

My first pro gig was when I was in middle school. I was in the school band, and after school in a little rock band. We were terrible, but so was everybody else back then.

We got a gig at a school dance. There I was, on stage, with my best friends at the time. We were having the time of our life (so far) covering the hit songs of the day, to the best of our ability. Then I looked down and that cute girl, who wouldn't even acknowledge my existence in English class, was 'making eyes' at me. And at the end of the night, they actually paid me money !!!!!!!!!

That's when I said, “This is what I want to do for the rest of my life.” I'm well past retirement age, still doing it, I've got the best woman up there with me, and I have no desire to quit.

Thank you to all the composers who wrote the songs I'm coverint.

Notes ♫

In Europe, well at least France where I live, the fee is 20,99 € per year (about $23.25 at the current exchange rate) to upload unlimited albums and songs. That's a bargain right there!

Does that include licenses for cover songs? As I mentioned that costs $12 per year per song with my distributor. The actual cost for the distribution is very cheap and unlimited in number. We’ve distributed around 75 songs but this is the first cover for us.

The licensing only took four days and the song was seamlessly distributed to all the streaming platforms. So now I’ve got to work getting it on some good playlists. smile DistroKid has handled over 75 songs for us but as I alluded to in the topic this is our first cover upload. And Spotify shows the correct info indicating it was performed by the Allman Brothers and written by Warren Haynes. All with checking one box and agreeing to pay $1 a month! Oh and DK sent us a two page pdf of the license.

I don't know. I didn't see any reference to it on the web pages that are viewable without having an account and being logged in, but I'm going to make the safe bet that your experience would be 100% the same in the EU.
