As above can anyone tell me how to use the sounds on a fitted expansion card .How to get the midi file to play those sounds instead of the factory default set.

It depends on what you're using for a midi file player. That could be anything from an iPod to a laptop with different software. Give us the details.

If you're talking about Biab or RB you can convert an .ini file to a .pat file. .ini is a Cakewalk file that someone created that lists all the patches on that card then Biab/RB can convert it to a .pat file. This is strictly some user somewhere being good enough to create it and post it. If you can't find an .ini file anywhere on the internet for that card you'll have to create it yourself.

If you're not talking about PG programs then like I said we'll need the details.

I am talking about the jv80 for the jv1080 synth.

So I can change the sounds to like a guitar on the card and not the stock gm sounds of the jv1080.

However, the chance of them having your SRX files may be pretty slim. You may have to add them to patch map manually.

Between the instructions on the above page and the manual you should be able to edit that text file pretty easily.

Without having a 1080 or the same SRX expansion card it would be difficult to test to see if I had it right.
Which SRX card did you get?

It's also possible to find a Cakewalk/Sonar patch map and convert it to RB or BiaB, if you happen to find someone with the same SRX card.
There are more than a few people here that have a 1080 so I'm hoping one of them notices this thread and may be able to help you easier than I could.
Anyway, using the 1080 Patch Map on the page I referenced will allow you to get beyond the basic 'GM' sounds. That's a huge first step to begin with.
Once you grasp how that works, you can start customizing it.

Honestly; it is not very hard once you can see the synth and the manual (with the banks laid out). I suggest starting with the 1080 Patch Map I referenced and just adding to it.

The JV-1080 ONLY took the older and smaller capacity SR-JV cards, but there are sonar .ins files for every one of these cards as well as all SRX cards around. Once you have the Sonar .ins files like mentioned previously.

Go here and download the “Download Instruments Definitions included with the latest cakewalk software,” then unzip and the “Roland.ins” has all 19 SR-JV cards (with rhythm/drum sets if card had anyy) and ALL SRX cards except for four “special” (given away as teasers, special promotions, etc. – they are very small with one a few patches and usually not worth trying to obtain – I have/had them all; SRX-96, 97.99, and 99 I still have 97 and 98 just because)

The .ins file is a simple TEXT file so if you know what you are doing you could deleted all sections NOT applicable to SR-JV cards you do not have which I recommend since BIAB’s patch file DOES still have a TEXT (entries) LINE limit, large but not large enough) .

Eye roll tech talk: Since EACH SR-JV and SRX had its OWN unique preassigned (By Roland) bank and patch locations there was no need to have one .ins for SR-JV-002 for JV-1080 and a different one for the XV-5080 or 3080 or..

I did manage to learn how to make a pat file and an ins file .

Though it looks like the jv1080 either has to be in performance mode for to get the higher instruments as in general midi mode it does not access them.

Problem in performance mode the gm instruments play all weird.

Am I wasting my time trying to access the higher instruments in gm mode .

Any help greatly appreciated.

Can you post your ini file for us to look at?
I am pretty sure there is a way to write the list so you can use the GM sounds in performance mode, instead of looking at it the other way around and trying to use the extra sounds while in GM Mode.

For my Roland it looks like this.

The default is used and the others are available as options in my patch map.
After this first section I go on to list the other 1000+ patches in order of Banks and Collections .. I even created commented out sections for the various SRX cards that existed at the time (including the known MSB LSB info) so if someone had one I didn't, they could just add their new patches there.

Or, maybe that synth can't do this. Just a thought on how I did it, with a Roland, though the Roland I use isn't as old as yours (but not really newer either).

I have an XV-3080 which probably works about the same as your JV=1080. I think GM mode is exactly that: the GM sounds, period.

To use all the sounds you have to be in performance mode. On my system the way to access the GM patches in performance mode is to access bank H, same as I'd access any other Bank in performance mode.

Second, it's been a long time since I had a JV1080, now have XV-5080 and Fantom XR and Integar7 and use to have XP30, JV2020, D110, not some I can't remember) but I'm pretty sure (see user manual pg's. 76-77 of manual) when in GM mode that's ALL you can access: GM sounds. And if you put 1080 in "GM mode" that is an exclusive mode - you cannot do anything BUT GM sounds: there are no other banks or "higher banks" and you do NOT have access to the Preset banks: User, A, B, C, or even D (and Preset D is GM sounds - not to be confused with GM MODE). This is pretty standard Roland behavior.

However, when NOT in "GM MODE" then if just in Patch mode (using patches from User bank or Preset banks A,B,C, D and again where D is GM sounds, different than GM MODE) or in Performance MODE than any of the 16 patch positions (expect 10 = ch 10 drums) when in Performance Mode you can assign a GM sound (from Preset bank D) to that patch.

What that means is that in Patch mode or Performance, not in GM MODE, than any sound from any bank is accessible
