(Because as we all know you can't backup files that are in use so you can't backup Windows FROM Windows.)
..........................
Seems times have moved on Eddie, though it doesn't seem logical to do so, I do this all the time with Macrium Reflect, Run it within the OS and it will back up the drive.
Don't ask me how it's done, all I know is that it works.
Check out Macrium Reflect free.

I use Acronis True Image and it takes about 2 hours to fully back up my 500GB boot drive. Easily saved to an external USB drive (at about 300GB size with compression) and yes I've run the restore to make sure the backup works. I just set it to go at night and go to bed.

Eddie, I use Macrium Reflex for cloning my HDs: Good stuff. I'll be getting it. My IT path after 2005 did NOT see me needing to clone drives anymore so I never had a reason to investigate software to do that. The last time I used it was Norton Ghost when you could do broadcasting and we did 48 PCs at a time for a project refreshing the computers of the Cleveland elementary school. THAT was a great gig. Every school used the same image, so we had 2 servers running and did 96 PCs at a time at the home base while the worker bees were out installing the ones that were imaged the day before. $26 an hour to do that. That had me on the "home" crew because I had done some much of that before, and because I was 54 years old and the less experienced guys that did the installs were in their mid 20s. The team lead understood that I was less than eager to do the grunt work. We could do that 96 at a time thing 3 times per shift. 288 PCs a day.

I do complete images, Eddie. It's easy, just start it up while I'm doing something else, perhaps music on the other computer, and it takes care if itself.
Why, because if something messes up the system, I can get it back.
It's saved my butt a few times.
The worst was, I bought a guitar amp-sim/fx pedal, and with it came a CD with Cubase LE on it.
I hadn't tried Cubase in years, so I thought I'd give it a go. I did a disk image backup and then put the CD in and clicked 'go'.
The installation didn't complete, instead I got an error code (I forget what it said) and the computer locked up.
I did a Ctrl+Alt+Del and rebooted. The boot up was interrupted with a message on a DOS-like screen wanting to finish the installation. I typed the correct letter and it froze.
The next time I typed the abort letter and it froze.
I booted in the safe mode and it froze.
I popped in the rescue disk, and in after some time passed, my computer was exactly as it was before the installation attempt.
The CD-ROM went into the trash.
The way I understand it is the disk image makes a clone of the hard disk, so that even if Windows gets corrupted, I can restore the disk to its earlier state.
I have one of those toaster drives, so I can take the backup drive out, so any malware can't get to it, only turning the drive on and inserting the disk for backups.
Plus I keep a few disks from a once per month backup for quite a few months, in case a sleeper virus wakes up.
Also, I use SyncToy every night to back up all my important data on another external disk. That way I don't have to clone every day, and if I insert an old disk, I'd still have my new data.
I figure it's better to have and not need the extra protection than to need and not have it.

I have a toaster too and I love the thing. I don't back up like you do but if I did that's what I would use. I have like 4 1TB drives that are wiped clean. (Remembering back to when I thought I was cool because I added that second 40 meg hard drive to my 386-20 computer. And honestly said "What am I going to do with all this space?" Now I have over 80 gb of just music on that removeable drive.) My (listening) music storage is on an external 500 GB drive. I don't really write that much anymore to be overly concerned with it. Since you still work I get why you back up so much. My role in music anymore is pretty much reduced to "consumer", buying up stuff for my estate to sell when I croak! Since the proceeds go to 3 animal shelters I think of it that every guitar and synth I buy is just a deferred donation... I have 5 of them up there that I have never played beyond tuning them. I do have some ideas rolling around my otherwise vacuous head and now that I have 2022 I should get busy with writing some things again. I just finished that redo and the studio looks great and sounds better with new carpeting.

Notes,
I’m still battling health issues so I’m late to the party on this thread but I think I have something to add that I couldn’t immediately see mentioned by anyone else. I did my new PC build with Windows 10 and did not update because of well documented issues of AMD CPUs being throttled down by Windows 11. When AMD (not Microsoft) provided the fix, I waited a few weeks before going ahead and doing the update. I did some quick testing of my most important applications and found that one was not compatible at the moment. I contacted the developer and was assured that a fix would be out in about a month, which was going to be a month too long for me, so I decided to go back to Windows 10. Fortunately, Microsoft gives you 10 days to revert back so you go to the command to do that and you are good. As my comical life seems to go these days, 4 hours after I reverted back to Windows 10, the developer emailed me to let me know that a download of the now Windows 11 compatible software was available. So, I downloaded the new software, re-updated to Windows 11, and all was good.
At any rate, if you decide to update, my advice is to immediately check all of the things vital to your business ventures because you only have a small window of time to rollback to the old OS.
Hope this helps.

Thanks, Keith, good advice.
Eddie, yes I'm still working, and I don't intend to stop either. Retirement may be the best thing for a lot of people, but I love to perform, and I like to make BiaB styles.
Gigging is the most fun I can have with my clothes on, and when I finish a style in BiaB that I have been working on for perhaps weeks, and it turns into something I'm really proud of, it makes me feel good.
Why stop? If I rest, I'll rust.
If Willie Nelson and Tony Bennet gigged into their 90s, hopefully I will still be able to perform AND have an audience to play for.
I think I'll keep putting the upgrade off for a month or so. It'll give MS more time to find and fix the bugs.

Upgrading was a doddle. The only real changes seem cosmetic bit it does seem a little faster and snappier.

I got a call from the studio last night, and Bary asked 'hey is there a Windows 11 now?' I said yeah, why? He said 'the computer here says Windows 11 now' .. otherwise he may not have even noticed if it weren't for his Bluetooth mouse acting up. We got that straightened out though.

best om No trouble. The pedal is no longer in stock, it's a Digitech RP355. I play sax, wind synth, flute, guitar, tactile MIDI controller and sing on the gig, so schlepping gear is something I like to minimize. The amp sim in the pedal allows me to go directly into the PA Mixer without a guitar amp. There are a number of amp simulators in there, I like the Twin Reverb and AC30 the best. There are also the normal stomp box effects in the device like wah, overdrive, fuzz, and so on. I have about a dozen preset configurations that I use, and it comes preloaded with hundreds. I'm sure Digitech has something newer and better by now, time and technology marches on. Notes ♫

Check out Macrium Reflect free. Macrium is cool, but you can make a full system backup from Windows itself. There is a tool in the Control Panel (both in Windows 10 and Windows 11) called Backup and Restore (Windows 7). From there you can create a system image or a system repair disc.

FWIW, (not much) I have a Digitech RP plugged in for regular daily use, just liked it better than the Line 6 I bought about the same time (neither of them are the latest/greatest) The Line 6 is still here, just not my go-to Personal preference, YMMV, etc

OK, so I finally put Win11 on the nagging computer.
No problems, everything seems to be working.
However, I liked the Win 10 taskbar and start menu better.
I am accustomed to the taskbar disappearing and hiding at the top of the screen. Win11 lets it disappear, but won't let me move it to the top. No big deal, I guess I'll get used to that, but it's been at the top for me since Win95.
I moved the new start menu to the left, I like it better there but, it only holds 18 icons without scrolling.
In Win10 I had groups for more than 18. I had groups for utilities, music, text, graphics, website maintenance, & video with the icons all in their group.
Open the menu and click got me to anything I generally use. Now it can be open the menu, scroll & click. Now that is not a major inconvenience, but it's a step towards less efficiency.
Other than that, no problems (yet).
I suppose, as in most Windows updates, I'll find some things that are improved, too.
