Using Band-in-a-Box to learn solos by other instruments.
I've already described a tip about how to learn guitar parts by watching them on-screen. That tip is here
http://www.pgmusic.com/forums/showflat.php?Cat=0&Number=404762&an=0&page=0#Post404762A variation on this tip, is to copy soloing parts from ** other instruments *** (ie not guitar) by watching them on the guitar neck.
Of course you can also do this by reading the notation or tab. But this method shows you the parts being played on guitar, which is helpful.
1. Setup Band-in-a-Box to play a song, that has a soloist added (for example an Alto Sax soloist. Play the song.
2. Open the guitar window. Select the track that has the Soloist on it. You now see and hear the solo being played on the guitar.
3. Control what position you would like to see the guitar displayed. You can do this by either
- clicking the <Pos> (Position) button (this button toggles between 2 popular positions to display guitar in the key). For example, for the key of "D", this will show the guitar in 2n position or 7th position.
- Or click on the fret number to move the guitar display to that position. For example, click on #5 to set it to 5th position.
By doing this, you will be learning
Soloing, Ear Training, improving Guitar Sight "seeing" (learning to play guitar by watching the guitar fretboard
You'l be learning to copy other instrument solos (sax, trumpet etc.), and learning to play in the position of your choice.
For example, if playing in key of F, you can try 5th position, and then try the same thing in 10th position.
