Hi Guys - I have been surfing for online guitar lessons basically to see what is available (I have already purchased the PG range of products - Masterclass series etc). I cannot believe how many online sites offer online tuition with youtube type videos!. The big question is - how do you narrow the sites down to reputable ones with good quality lessons and good value for money? I play most genres of pop, rock, contemporary Christian, acoustic/folk guitar etc but would like to develop jazz guitar abilities. I also find the video type tuition very helpful. I use BiaB, Realband & PT extensively for backtracks and practice accompaniment so an online series using PG programs would be great . Any proposals? Roy

Roy, I would strongly suggest checking out truefire.com... They are very reasonable, ($20 bucks a month) and have a variety of guitar styles to choose from... Some of the courses are better than others, like anything else, but I took them for a couple of months and found them to be very informative for what I wanted, which was mostly jazz and rock...

Depending on what level you're at, and what your learning goals are, there's one thing that in my opinion needs to be built into any online course of lessons (and is almost never built in).
And that is interactivity.
Online lessons are great in these areas: 1) They're usually cheaper per lesson 2) You can download them, and if there's something you don't understand you can assimilate it by layering (basically watching it over and over and over - some of the latest brain research tells us that the brain learns better like this) 3) You can do them totally at your own convenience - plus there's no travel time to and from lessons. 4) You can sometimes get lessons from 'masters' who otherwise you wouldn't get access to (for geographical reasons)
BUT.
Unless there's some interactivity the advantages get nullified a bit.
So again depending on your level and your goals - look for a course where a requirement is that YOU have to film yourself playing and post it for the instructor to check out, critique, comment, give you feedback etc etc.
Just my 10 cents.....
Not everyone will agree with me I know...but that's what I believe.
Paul

I am a pround on-line student of Berkleemusiconline. I completed Chords 101, Scales 101 and Jazz Guitar 101. And loved the entire program. Learned a ton which I have been able to incorporated into my playing. Detailed, rigorous, structure and systematic lesson plans (and yes some amount of interaction via weekly class recording assignments with reviews). Best for me was the flexible timing since you work during the week on your schedule. But alas, you pointed out the limitation (...very pricey). I will take more classes if and when I can afford it.

I saw this a little bit too late... but for anyone else looking for lessons, I must say I really like www.JustinGuitar.com -- He has an extensive FREE course. However if you can afford it, it would be nice to make a donation once in a while.
