Is it just my PC or does the new BIAB take up to a minute to boot up? The old 2013 used to come up in seconds. Can I do anything about it please? Ian

I found no change. Is this the first time you've started 2014? That has been reported by a few people over the last couple of years. Exit and restart.
If that doesn't help, do you have space on your hard drive, at least 15%?
And defrag the hard drive; that can help.

Hi Matt Its only since I DLd 2014. 2013 was good and quick - merely a very few seconds It happens every day the first time I boot it up. I get the 2014 logo up in about 15 secs (by this time in 2013 I was already cookin')and then I can wait at least 45 secs before the GUI comes on. I have 60% of my 500gb drive available. I'm going to Defraggle overnight and see if that helps. Thanks Matt Ian

There shouldn't be a noticable difference between 2013 and 2014 in that regard.

Peter it is noticeably slower here too on each start after a boot up.
On my first run through on RB as well it seemed faster, but it is still grinding for a long time to load the first song.

Ian You've been moving and copying the entire bb folder from one place to another on the same hard drive, and you are running an older machine that shipped with XP, which means the disk drive is likely a lot less capacity than what's out there today. Very good idea to run Disk Defragmenter on that drive now. Fragmented files can add to loading times. --Mac

Hi Mac Yes, thanks to you I got the BB folder where it should be.I deleted all the OLD folder once I was sure the new \bb location was working OK so the HD still has 300gb capacity left. (Its a 500) I defragged overnight (Defraggler took 10 hours to run through all files). I have just run two PC Boot ups and then booted Biab from cold. Problem still there - No noticeable improvement. Double Click Icon and Logo appears in 10 secs. The GUI takes another 52 secs (I used my Stopwatch!)to appear. 2013 was up and running in about 10 secs or so. Once the logo appears what is going on "behind the scenes" that takes SO long? cheers ian

Hi Ian,
I just timed my start up. It was 5 secs for the BIAB 2013 screen and then in 15 secs I was into the program.
Have you recently upgraded or changed your antivirus software?
Regards, Noel

Cheers Ian Ok Noel I disabled Kaspersky and BIAB booted up from cold in appx 20 secs, just like it used to. I've used Kaspersky as my AV for years, certainly since 2008 and never had this problem. BUT - as you may know, until a week ago BIAB was in my PROGRAM FILES (had been for as long as I can remember) and following good advice on here I moved it all to a c:\bb folder. Would Kasspersky now be looking at it, where it didnt before in the Prog Files? Ian

Antivirus very well could be holding up the show as it attempts to analyze all the files BB has to open during startup.
There may be a Setting inside your particular Antivirus program where you can tell it to disallow for Band in a Box.

Same situation here, 2014 takes much longer than 2013 did. No change in location.

I use Avast! on the old XP laptop I kept around for the beta testing and just performed an experiment with it.
First, my BB was loading quite fast.
But that was because I long ago entered the Settings stuff for Avast! and told it not to scan opening programs.
So I re-entered the Settings and rooted around in there looking for whatever the command was (memory, eh?) and found it to be the command that tells the antivirus NOT to scan programs upon opening.
Tried to restart BB and ---- ----- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----- --- ----- --- ------ ----- Took a VERY long time to even get to the first BB Splash pic, then ---- ---- ------ --- ---- --- --- -- -- ------ ------- ----- ------- --- --- -- ------ --- -- ---- ---- ----- ----- Finally I got the main BB screen, but still couldn't do anything yet --- --- -- -- ------ ----- --- ---- ---- --- ----- - The the screen blinked and since I have my Prerfs set to "Load Previous Song" it gradually did load the song and after another short --- ----- --- --- -- --- with no indicator or anything, it was finally ready to hit Play.
Whew!
Revisiting my antivirus control panel and resetting that one command, to not scan when Opening programs has returned my XP machine and BB running on the USB drive to rapid starting.
Now, someone is going to come along and post dire warnings concerning the turnoff of scan at program opening. Count. On. It. *grin*
Since the Setting in Avast only covers the opening of programs, while leaving all the other protections in place, I think its fairly safe to do this as long as you do as I do and take the little bit of time to RightClick on any recently downloaded things and choose Scan For Viruses before rushing tto doubleclick and install that Freebie and you should be just as safe.
Also - accepting the typical default setting inside the antivirus software to scan *every* program that you choose to open *every time* is likely costing speed of opening in all your other programs.
Don't know the Kapersky or other antivirus Settings, sorry, cannot give a step-by-step.

I have a XP machine and also use Avast antivirus. One neat feature of Avast is you can right click on the round Avast ball, open the avast shields control sub menu to disable shields for 10 minutes, 1 hour, until the computer is restarted or permanently. Note: I also have my network connection under user control so when antivirus is off so is the network connection.

That's right, Jim, choosing the Avast! "disable for 10 minutes" before opening Band in a Box makes BB open up on the old XP laptop here ready to go in about 8 seconds.
But I keep forgetting to do that before doubleclicking the desktop icon... D'oh!

Mac I've gone through the power up routine so many times I've accessed the Avast icon twice because I never even noticed I did it the first time because I was on autopilot. Not only is this Dell XP my main machine, it's the only pc I use. There are two other pcs in the house but I only touch them when I have to go into pc technician or network technician mode.

I think I should try to Script the routine.
Then I could hit my own created "shortcut" to open BB, but first the Script could possibly be used to set Avast! to the 10 minute off drill, then invoke BBW.exe.
Hmmm...
Anybody got a spare Round Tuit?
