Fabulous and holding your own with two of our
favorites. Janice listens to Ella and the "Capitol
Years" of Frank a LOT.

As an upright bass player I really appreciate
the fretless sound. Everything works.....

Bud,

I didn't know you play upright - do you ever use it to accompany your own tunes with Janice? Actually, one of my excuses for doing this tune was to debut my new fretless. It's an Ibanez and has Piezo pickups just like those used on an acoustic bass. It can produce more or less of a facsimile of the residual string buzz - the strings vibrating back down against the fingerboard, which gives the upright just one of its wonderful qualities.

Hmmm, Bud plays bass and Janice is a Sinatra fan, which means she can sing Sinatra songs .... smirk Hear the wheels turnin'?

I never expected - but, man, am I thrilled - to hear from anybody that I was holding my own against Frank and Ella. If true, then I used that novel arrangement to bootstrap my way into their neighborhood, where I clearly don't belong.

Thank you.

Really liked the tune. My music theory is very basic. I remember Ella from the Ed Sullivan show and always loved to hear her sing. Leaned a little more to the Beatles however. One thing I do appreciate and love to hear is a guitar well played and a song well done. Kudos on both....

Josie,

Thank you for the kind words, all the more meaningful now that I have a better grasp of the extent of your ability and knowledge. And let me also not ignore your initiative with Noel to help get the Ozone straightened out.

Scott,

Looks we we're both denizens of the Pleistocene era - Ed Sullivan, Ella, woolly mammoths, Mr. Wences (s'aright? s'aright!), peat bogs, ... Yeah, they were exciting times alright.

You don't need a theory to tell you if you like a piece of music or not. I'm glad to hear you liked it.

I listened to Ella, Frank and Dean and frankly (no pun intended) all three are different but also super. When I listened to your version I thought, "this is something that George Benson would do", and you did it damn well! I love your guitar work!

I do understand your frustration with teaching. Sometimes I wonder why I keep teaching guitar, bass, and music theory to some students who couldn't care less. But you always get the one gem who makes it all worth while IMHO. Fortunately for me teaching, along with playing gigs, was a side job.

You can have all the theory in the world but if you don't play from the heart it just don't matter! I tell my students learn theory, practice scales, modes, etc, but do not get hung up on them. Play what you feel then use those techniques to learn what you played. Also use them to expand your horizons.

I could care less what theory anyone who posts a song here has. If it's a good song it's a good song regardless of ones technical knowledge.

I post to have others can evaluate my simple little tunes. Sometimes I get really good suggestions on how to improve them and I really appreciate that. Sometimes they are ok as is.

Anyway I really liked your version!

You definitely brought the tune to a different place, but I think the writers are looking down and smiling! This is a beautiful musical treatment that compliments the wonderful lyrics well (God, they wrote in such a crafty way back then). I thoroughly enjoyed it, and, although I wouldn't call you a singer, you can get a song across very nicely, especially that last C! If you get a chance, please check out my tune DESTINATION:PARADISE and send me a backdoor opinion. I'd love to know what you thought as you are the resident jazz maestro. Take care. Greg

Mario,

We're on the same team when it comes to theory. You don't need no damn theory to tell you if you like a tune or not.

You do need some sort of conceptual approach if you're going to deconstruct a tune and replace it with new harmonies, voicings, etc. But this conceptual approach doesn't have to be formal music theory as taught in schools.

A person could invent their own theory starting from the atomic building blocks: scales, modes. But the theory will always be a kind of unseen cloud hovering over a tune, determining what the weather is like down there.

And thanks for the kind remarks.

Greg,

Very, very good insight. You're right, I should not be considered a singer. But you gotta have me if you want the total package, and, to me, it's the total package that counts.

Now, let me find that back door - Oops, I tried sending you a PM just now and I got a message "User not found." Lemme see if rebooting the machine does the trick.

And thanks.

Dean
