I've been mixing mostly from headphones for practical reasons more than anything, but I will switch on my KRK's and tweak again. When listening through headphones I listen directly from my Presonus Audiobox. When I'm happier with my mix I will listen again but through my VRM Box which gives me room and speaker variations. Once I'm happy I then upload to SoundCloud and then listen through my Computer HiFi + sub. So I gues I don't need a sub but it would be nice icing on the cake when listening through my KRK's.

Paul - Room treatment would be a priority over having a sub. Although with 6" monitor sizes and below, the sub is kinda important too. I've gone without a sub since I have 8" cones and they provide good bass response.
Matt - Totally agree on more systems to test mixes on. I like to listen to the mix in mono (ie cheap radio) and also in my car that has a sub in it. I'll also give a listen in headphones for stereo mix.
Guitar Hacker - My JBLs have a mic system for tuning the room similar to the ARC you mentioned. Helps close the gaps on my room problems. I have my room treated with some old Auralex 24 x 24 tiles I inherited from a friend remodelling his studio. I used the "Mixing Secrets for the Small Studio" book as far as where I placed the tiles around the room. Helped a lot!

"My JBLs have a mic system for tuning the room similar to the ARC you mentioned." Man, I've got a serious Jones on for those JBLs. They are sweet. Regards, Bob

Mixing Secrets is a MUST HAVE book for anyone serious about getting the most out of their home studio. A sub isn't absolutely necessary. AS long as one learns and understands their existing speakers, a good solid mix can be had on just about all of them. I try NOT to do my primary mix in cans. BUT... I do use cans from time to time to check the mix. The most important thing here in this conversation is the knowledge one has regarding the strengths and weaknesses of the speakers they are using, and also a knowledge of how the room is affecting them helps.
You can find my music at: www.herbhartley.comAdd nothing that adds nothing to the music. You can make excuses or you can make progress but not both. The magic you are looking for is in the work you are avoiding.

Where lack of a sub can be an issue is if you have content in your mix, below what your speakers can actually output - then go to a system where there is a sub and all of a sudden your mix is a floppy mess in the low end because you couldn't hear the low frequency junk that was in it. This has happened to me. One practice that has nearly eliminated it is high-pass filtering nearly everything. I set the high pass in mix, not solo'ed and I almost always set the cutoff frequency higher than I would 'naturally' if setting it solo'ed.
