Floyd,

The choice of instruments for this song is perfect - everything placed as it should be & another flawless mix. I, too was impressed with the entrance of the strings when you chose to bring them in.

Another masterful, wonderfully composed production...

Phew! That is something else Floyd. As Charlie says, a complex situation is put across so beautifully in this song. Curve indeed.

Greg - I certainly appreciate all those wonderful comments. After listening to the cello again, I found I liked it, too, if I kept it from stepping on certain piano parts (particularly the ending) - thanks!

"i know the way her fever flows"

Wow, that line just knocked us out. It is really defines the rest of the lyric.
We knew at this point that we were listening to a completely unique take
on the breakup theme.

The pianos and cello sound like they are played by folks who have worked
with you for years. This is a showcase within the User Showcase for illustrating
the power of RT's when arranged by one with prodigious skill. And we are coming
to take for granted the great vocal and clarity in the mix for which adjectives
escape.

Extraordinarily well done mr jane and it deserves a huge audience.

Hi Floyd,

I think this is one of your best songs, beautiful.
Both piano tracks blend very well together and leave lots of space for your voice. On top of that the song has a slow, quiet and even relaxing pace, despite of the pretty dramatic lyrics.

En... dank je voor je Nederlandse commentaar op Westerwolde

What a great audio journey. The song and its arrangement are first class!

As I sat here listening with my eyes closed, the image that appeared in my mind was that of a guy sitting on a chair on a lonely stage. He looked a bit like Marlon Brando in 'Streetcar Named Desire' - roughly semi-dressed and wearing jeans and a white singlet; no shoes. The guy was half-talking, half-singing to the audience. (His partner had just stormed off into the wings leaving shattered chaos scattered across the floor in her wake.)

To my ears, this song has "from a theatrical production" written all over it. (I mean that as a compliment.)

As always, you've managed to invent some outstanding phrases that are not only conversational but also set the tone and clearly define the characters within the lyrics. Some of the word combinations that left me thinking, "ooooh, that's very clever, floyd" were...

  • front door screams (In my mind, this personified the front door. It's a terrific choice of verb.)
  • huffy last goodbye ('huffy' is a great choice of adjective - it adds a whole heap of indignant depth to the 'last goodbye')
  • exit cry (You cleverly made me think of 'war cry' with this phrase.)
  • I know the way her fever flows (A very creative way of saying 'she runs hot and cold'.)
  • The four lines from "You-don't-love-me accusations" (what a great compound adjective, by the way!) through to ..."the fault".
  • "Give your enemy an apology, Give your lover another day" (such very powerful lines that astutely summarise the duality of the couple's relationship)

I totally enjoyed everything about this.

Regards,
Noel

P.S. I forgot to mention how crystal clear your production is. It's outstanding.

As always, Noel, it is a pleasure to read your thoughts on songs and productions. It just so happens I look very much like a young Marlon Brando. HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!! I can certainly see this being done just the way you described it. You pointed out some of my favorite things about this song. I'm quite tickled, myself, with the title - I keep thinking "man! I like that title..." Thanks for your wonderful words...

Thanks, Josie - appreciate that. The piano is a 4Front TruePiano - they are exceptional - with a lot of variety between the different type pianos...
In this case, I had to add a bit more reverb to the TruePiano than I would normally chose to - so that it matched the sound of the RT piano (even though I had turned the reverb on the RT completely off - the recordings of some of the piano seem to have a "big room sound" to them - even "dry")

Definitely listening first from here on in!!!

I didn't like the piano arrangement initially but it quickly grew on me. nice sparse arrangement. All in all I enjoyed.

Your voice and production, as usual, are impeccable.

"Neil Diamond trying to sound like floyd..." HA! crack me up! someday, we'll need to share a beer over a discussion about that piano... thanks for the listen!...

Aren't these supertracks great? I wish I could play piano like that! The only problem is that you wouldn't normally track this up - you'd do the tracks at the same time so that the piano could follow the voice. I can only imagine how difficult it was to sing and follow the piano, but you've got it just right and the whole thing sounds like it was done live. Magnificent.

ROG.

Hi, ROG! Actually, the way I did this was to sing to the RT only (811:Piano, Acoustic, Solo-Acc PopVancouver Ev 100) which is, for the most part a consistent flow - it does have a few quirks now and then - I'm assuming modeled after Joni Mitchell's style of playing. Then, once I had that done, I added in the MIDI Supertrack (2066:Piano, Rhythm NewAgeAnswers Ev16 110) which is a lot more variable, to emphasize the lyric with its timing - matching parts of that track to the lyric... so that when I was finished, (hopefully) it sounded like a player playing for the singer... glad you came by for a listen...

Very nice work. The piano is as crisp and pure as I've heard anywhere. I gotta look up, and play around with the SMP-NAA.

Exquisite is the work I would use to describe this. Loved the production as well. I was waiting for the "band" to kick in but as I began to realize it was a piano song, I was already well "into" the song.

Thanks for all that, Herb. Appreciate it. Sometimes, ya just gotta give the band a break, ya know...

Thanks, Trevor - you know I always appreciate when you drop by...makes me feel good that you consider the arrangement well done (since you are a piano guy... and, hey, when might we hear another from you?)

I liked it a lot and it shows another side of BIAB that we don't often hear on this forum. Congratulations on another fine piece of work. Tom

Tom - appreciate all that. I've always liked these type productions - which I could NEVER do if it weren't for BIAB!

Fantastic write, and the cello coming in was perfect.

I love the space in the song - it reminded me of an early Springsteen song with a country flavor.

David - that may be one of my all-time favorite "reviews". What I wouldn't give to be able to maintain a style that could be defined as "early Springsteen with a country flavor"! Thanks for dropping in!
