A new feature was (partially) added to BIAB 2015 where track names were no longer fixed as,

- Bass
- Piano
- Drums
- Guitar
- Strings
- Melody
- Soloist

The new feature will rename these track names to something more appropriate like calling the Piano track "Pedal Steel" when you load a pedal steel RealTrack in the Piano slot. This is a cool feature that was never completed unfortunately! In various places in the software it reverts back to the default set of track names even when the mixer shows better names!

This would just be a minor annoyance except when it comes to rendering individual tracks. I render all the tracks and the track that says "Pedal Steel" in the mixer is now named with the word "Piano"! So now, not only is it named incorrectly (as compared to the more accurate mixer name) but I have to remember what the old track names were in order to decipher which one is which!

So, thanks to a few smart folks here, I have learned I can turn off this feature and now at least it is consistent. BUT, maybe now that we are a year past the release of this feature, PG should finish it? That would be best!

This is a tough one. PG Music responded to user requests to give us this feature. It would be impossible to correct documentation, for example, because they could never know what was selected by the user. For program prompts, it would be great to change according to user selections.

When we last discussed this, an idea that had some traction was to ship BIAB with the feature turned off by default. When users become more advanced and understand all the processes where they need to identify individual tracks, they can knowingly make the change to user-defined names.

But I'll give this a +1 because something should be done to improve consistency.

Why would documentation be an issue? For the default, documentation and software, change the text everywhere and call it track 1, track 2, etc. And in the software just change it on the fly everywhere!

If I change Piano to Pedal Steel (or JohnBoy), then show that on the mixer, on all dialogs, in rendered filenames, etc.

I came up with some ideas in 2013, a few of which were 'implemented' in a fashion in 2015.

But the hard-coded names in other parts of the program were not touched, leaving the legacy issues you have continued to identify.

I still think we need to separate out the track names and the track labels. Track names should not (in general) be named after instruments - that's for track labels - other than maybe for drums (since MIDI requires channel 10 and RealDrums are not processed the same as RealTracks). I do think any track should be able to serve as an instrument track or a drum track, but that's another story (RealBand supports this).

Functional names are fine, such as melody or solo tracks, but the other accompaniment tracks should be generic (maybe Accomp1, Accomp2, Accomp3, etc), and then you assign appropriate instruments to those named tracks.

Then, you could have the option of rendering files to either "Filename_Accomp3" (versus "Filename_Piano") or "Filename_PedalSteel" (or whatever instrument) or even "Filename_Accomp3_PedalSteel".

That way, in the documentation you can reference the generic track names, for which you can assign any instrument (GM, DX, VST, or Real).

But that's just my take on it.

Right, John. And it's not just your opinion. Of those who expressed an opinion in the discussion a year ago, I think most supported some scheme of numbering the tracks to help identify them throughout the program.

FWIW, back then I stated that it would be hard to identify all occurences. I suspected that some are hardcoded into the program. When the program initially was developed hard coding of variables was quite common. Computers were slow and memory was expensive.

While I still prefer lean code and a thorough cleaning of used memory at the end of a program, computers are fast enough to be able to handle overlays and external routines with ease.

The easiest way to address all requests is to add an instrument designating letter before the track name like p: Guitar, d: Bodhran or s: Horns.
This is not invasive for the programmer and almost selfexplantory for the user. (given that "s" is a bad example since it is being used for strings and soloist.)

Hmmm, isn't that just as confusing as what it does now? I think a track number is a clearer option.
T1: Guitar
T2: Bodhran
T3: Horns

Yes it would be, but obviously b, p, d, g... are hard coded into the program. Until this is changed T1 and such is not an option. I just don't recall where I had to know what "p" is a couple of days ago.

I found it again: When you manipulate who plays chords in BIAB: You enter a chord and enter e.g. F.bd.

Here it has to be a fixed variable for each track---not necessarily but that is very difficult to a) program and b) to get used to.

Fell into this trap this morning. Have to remember the Melody and Soloists tracks do not behave exactly as the other instrument tracks. So I attribute the strange results I was getting to this. When I moved over to the "other" tracks, all worked better.

For what it's worth, I still use the static track names that I grew used to. I like it that PG Music offers this as a choice.

If any users reading this thread would like to revert to the old names and have not been aware that it's possible, the option is in the first window after opening Prefs.

I find that the mixer contains enough information in the track name to give me the instruments.

Since consistency is important, though...

In this regard, I think jford said it best when he pointed out the need to separate track names from track labels.

Also, I think it's worth mentioning that science is littered with names and concepts that had an original meaning but then as theory developed, this original meaning turned out to be only part of the story but the name/idea was kept anyway. (The spdf notation of electron orbits is one example; conventional electrical current is another one.) In this regard, keeping the bpdgs for C...bds, etc., is not that bad because it has an historical basis. With this in mid, Ghinch's thought about p.Guitar, etc., has merit. Equally, with jford's idea of using numbers, C...bds would become C...135 (which also seems workable).

...just my 2¢ worth.
