We Are Not Alone

I was working on one of Leon's environmental lyrics and it was sounding a bit like a Pink Floyd song. I asked Greg if he would like to sing the song and he kindly agreed. Along with his great vocal Greg also mixed the song and sang backing vocals.

The Band
Greg Johnson vocals & backing vocals
I played various guitars & the solo
Leon wrote the lyrics

RealTracks in style: 366:Bass, Electric, Country Ev 065
RealTracks in style: ~688:Organ, B3, Background Pop Ev 065
RealTracks in style: 841:Guitar, Electric, Rhythm PopBalladSlowGritty Ev 065
RealTracks in style: ~368:Guitar, Acoustic, Strumming Ev 065
RealDrums in style: NashvilleEven16^1-a:Sidestick, HiHat , b:Snare, Ride
Kontakt female vocalist over end solo

Thanks to Leonardo Di Caprio for the end monologue (his address to the United Nations)

We are not alone

We are not alone
It’s not the only way
We are not alone
No matter what they say
A universe so big
Beyond imagining
Through the mud we dig
Shards worth treasuring
Hints and shadows all
Guesses in the dark
Stories of the fall
The darkness in the heart

Chorus
We are not alone
We share this ball of rock
Everything’s entwined
Our fates are interlocked
Coal is not your friend
Leave it in the ground
We’re heading for the shoals
Better turn this ship around

We are not alone
Though we act as if we are
Avoid calamity
By wishing on a star
The stars are burning gas
Deaf to all our prayers
The messages we’re sending
Better hope that no one hears
We are not alone
Better hope that no one hears

Chorus
We are not alone
We share this ball of rock
Everything’s entwined
Our fates are interlocked
Coal is not your friend
Leave it in the ground
We’re heading for the shoals
Better turn this ship around

Peter,

Great collaboration…. tastefully done. I do feel the Pink Floyd vibe both in the lyrics and arraignment, but hear clearly your own original sound in this recording. The Leonardo Di Caprio monologue really ties things up nicely and neatly at the end of the song. Look forward to hearing more of your songs.

Now that is cool!!! Excellent work all three. The write is terrific. The melody is a good match for the lyric. Greg's vocal is the perfect delivery vehicle for the message. Peter, brilliantly played passages in the solo. I like everything about this. The arrangement builds nicely. The soaring female vocal in the end was a nice touch. Superb mix. There are a lot of good things going on in this one! Tom

GREAT collab.
Sonically very together and sensitively assembles/arranged.
Lyrically - thank you, things such as this are needed.
Musically - walks a line between country, folk psych & PF with fab singing and a cool melody to understate the message and sell it gently.

Cheers

Wow, excellent song! So much good stuff going on here!

In addition to the obvious Pink Floyd influence, I hear Beatles all over this! Dynamics are exceptional, going from quiet to stirring... and the way the instruments and vocal parts flow in and out of the mix is really well done!

Great guitar playing, Peter!

Greg, this is a different vehicle for your voice, but I really like what you've done here, both as lead and backing vocals! The mix between the vocals and the instruments is perfect... such a professional sound, it really pays homage to the excellent music of the 70s!

Drums are snappy , everything is right where it needs to be...

You know you've put together a good song when you get the chills response, as Floyd said.. and this has it!

I don't generally like preachy lyrics, and 9 times out of ten I click away as soon as I realize I'm being fed a point of view. The fact that this song not only held my attention but left me scrambling to write a favorable review is a whole different kind of testimony to the power of this song.

Great job, my hat is off to all the collaborators!

What a fabulous collaboration

The laid back yet purposeful style and singing of this song, albeit a rock, uncovers many a strong truth regarding our fragile little blue home.

.
Well scripted, well sung, Well orchestrated, Well mixed. The rest has all been coverd by other great comments here.

Cool, so many things have already been expressed that I share.
Great collab, Greg, great vocals, Peter that solo was unbelievely good! just awesome. Production was slick, pro. I don't like preachy message songs, I'm in Pennsylvania where the coal industry is still important to the livelihood of many people, even with those things said, I have no problems with an excellently stated and presented song with a longer outlook and overview for us all.
Great job, enjoyed.

You guys definitely listened to "Dark Side of the Moon" in the early 80s!
We love this one.
Beautiful arrangement Peter (great Dave Gilmour guitar solo too), and Greg (we know you're a Pink Floyd specialist) very well sung!
And the Di Caprio monologue gives a cool touch to it all.

Neither of us listened to enough Pink Floyd to get the connection...

So what we are hearing follows:

1. Wonderful write with a message close to us
2. A beautifully sung and mixed vocal
3. Off the chart guitar playing
4. A mix that holds together at low volume, medium volume or high volume
5. A stellar example of a BIAB forum collab

One of the best that we've heard during our four years on the forum.

WTG guys!!!!!!!
