We definitely need more "power drum" styles -- many of the "rock" drums don't have the "umph" of the comparable MIDI drums. And more styles that use 8 rather than 16 -- I've got a few songs where the tempo range isn't narrow enough, and at the tempo of the song it's just incredibly frickin' busy.

(Actually, that would be a lovely feature, being able to specify the precise RealDrums pattern down to the tempo... unless there's already a way to do that and I haven't found it...?)

Specific songs and styles which would be way cool:

Phil Collins, esp. "In The Air Tonight" and ""That's All"

Matchbox 20

Santana (god, a Santana guitar solo style....)

Steely Dan

OK Go, "Here It Goes Again"

Barenaked Ladies, "Thanks That Was Fun"/"Sound Of Your Voice" and "One Week"

Best,

Hi Oliver

This is a really interesting idea for a style set. I was wondering about a couple of things. How about "mid period" Bruce Springsteen, not Born to Run which is too bombastic, but how about Thunder Road or the Ties that Bind. I know that Norton have a "Dancing in the Dark" style, but there's nothing from his earlier period. Following this, how about some later period Steve Earle, something like "The Revolution Starts Now".

I think that there is also a gap for rock with horns - think "10th Avenue Freeze Out" or almost anything from Van Morrison (or even Amy Winehouse!). Some of the "soul" horn parts in BAIB styles do a job in rock, but something like "10th Avenue Freeze Out" is almost a constructor kit for great horn fills. This is something I've suggested a couple of times before - maybe its time will come!

I think there is also a gap for the sort of "waves of sound" rock - things like Melissa Etheridge (e.g. "Breakdown") or Sara MacLachlan (e.g. "Building a Mystery"). Masses of 12 strings, synths etc.

Finally, over here, you can't escape from catchy, guitar driven pop/rock - some of our best bands are now cracking the US charts. Bands like the Arctic Monkeys, Franz Ferdinand and the Fratellis have all had US top 40 albums in the last few months. Problem is, they'd be very hard indeed to capture in a style - try Jacqueline by Franz Ferdinand or Baby Fratelli by the Fratellis - lots of tempo changes, key changes, style changes, riffs stolen from Led Zepplin etc etc ... Much more challenging than the "alt-rock" styles from 3 or 4 years ago.

Hope this helps.

Hi Oliver,
Slower soul-rock styles would be nice with 'cooler'/simpler brass parts, like the Memphis horns (Stax records sounds), or the Muscle Shoals section.

Thanks
John

Greetings All
I have been teaching guitar for 30years and been using BinaB since day 1 (1994?).
I often program backing tracks for students and have students from 7 years old to 70 yo.
BinaB has styles to cover almost all my students needs except for TEENAGERS lol.
The bands they want to play like are Green Day, Fallout Boy, AFI, Blink 182, Coheed and Cambria,
and the one thing they all want are FAST (180+bpm) styles.
A classic examples are AFI's Dancing through Sunday (230bpm) and Blink 182's Dammit.
I know there is a blink style (with terrible bass btw) but I have looked through all the style disks available and haven't been able to locate these aggressive modern styles anywhere.
Have I missed something?
Any advice appreciated.
Ian

How about some classic soft rock:

Neil Diamond: Solitary Man, You Got to Me, Kentucky Woman
James Taylor: You've Got a Friend, Fire and Rain
Gordon Lightfoot: Early Morning Rain, If You Could Read My Mind
Roy Orbison: Pretty Woman, Only the Lonely, In Dreams
Jim Croce: Operator, Time In A Bottle

What I'd love to see is a sprinkle of a few of these and later a whole set of this type of music.

Don

Oops! I didn't notice the how old this was. Still a good idea if soft rock could use more coverage.

Well, I’m not exactly sure what is “missing.” But the ones previously mentioned are nibbling at the corners (except for Buffalo Springfield). I would probably try and start with the true giants of music and see how far I can get and how successful their “styles” would work in BiaB.

Completely off the top of my head, the following are must haves:

1950s

Bo Diddley (ya gotta have a Bo Diddley beat, man)
Buddy Holly
Chuck Berry
Everly Brothers
Jerry Lee Lewis
Little Richard
Roy Orbison

1960s

Jefferson Airplane
Beach Boys
Beatles
Buffalo Springfield
Byrds (I see there is one now)
Cream
Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young
Dave Clark Five
Grateful Dead
Hot Tuna
Incredible String Band
Janis Joplin
Mamas and Papas
Motown (Supremes, Four Tops, Temptations)
Rolling Stones (I see there is now a Keith Richards style)
Simon and Garfunkel
The Who
Jefferson Airplane

1970s

Allman Brothers
Bruce
Tom Petty

Again, that is right off the top of my head as I’m on my coffee break. I can probably think of a few more at home. Did I mention the Jefferson Airplane?

OH, yes! More Little Feat!!!!

I would also like more Funk styles with funkier drums. It seems as if most of the funk styles still use a straight drum feel behind them.

I am also looking for more Metal styles a la Metallica, Soundgarden, Evanescence, etc. Particularly with a great bass and drum combo. Don't care much for a lot of guitar in it as that is what I play and I usually mute those anyway.

Thanks!

How about some good progressive rock styles from the late sixties through the 80's. Lots of us boomer prog rockers out here! Stuff like early Genesis, Yes, EL&P, Pink Floyd (90's please) and (gasp).... dare I say it......Gentle Giant. Also some fusion ala Return to Forever, Al DiMeola & Steve Morse (kind of hard to pigeonhole him).

I have sort of cobbled together some by mixing instruments from several styles, but it just doesn't quite work. My version of Lucky Man the drums are really weak. I still dream of various drummers and bass players in a box (pun intended).

Any chance of getting some prog rockers to do some styles? Especially drummers and bass players as they are the backbone of any music.

Are we talking MIDI styles or REAL (drums etc.)? Would like to see some new midi styles...walking bass blues maybe shuffles. Don't forget us longtime midi users, who have invested money in good sound modules and are happy with end products.

I second the '60s and Prog Rock Styles, in MIDI format. I port everything into a soft synth anyway, and have much more control over everything than I would with RT.

Ditto

Yeah some serious prog rock styles would be good ..also from the darker end of the spectrum ..Van der Graaf Generator (1975-76) and King Crimson (73-74 vintage).
The german group 'Can' ('future days'- 1973)...the French band Magma.. ('Tristan et Iseulde' and 'Kohntarkhosz' from 1974.)..and of course the great 'Gentle Giant' from England who were one of Frank Zappa's favourite bands..

I would like some medium ev 8 rockstyle with a bit more complex bigdrums while keeping a steady beat with snare and HH, eg. doobie brothers and more delicate popfunky ev 8 beats (Im talking real drums).
As it is now:
