Banjo

©2016 Robert Randall Burke

When I took up this banjo
I was just a boy
The other fellas laughed at me
To bring along a toy
But I had some room
So I stuck it in my pack.

After every battle
The boys would gather round
And listen to a mountain tune
That high and lonesome sound
And say a quiet prayer
For the ones ain't comin' back.

They said...
“Play that banjo loud, boy
And we'll give a Rebel Yell
Let them Yankees think
We're demons
Comin' straight from hell
We'll be livin' short
But we'll be dyin' well
To this old banjo playing Dixie.

This old banjo tells a story
Of good men come and gone
The spirit of survivors
Who just keep pushin' on
Through the smoke and fire
To see their Maker's face.

It took a miniball at Shiloh
I patched it with some tar
Never thought that this old thing
Would ever get this far
But it lasted long enough
For the two old men
To shake hands.

They said...
“Play that banjo loud, boy
And we'll give a Rebel Yell
Let them Yankees think
We're demons
Comin' straight from hell
We'll be livin' short
But we'll be dyin' well
To this old banjo playing Dixie.

When I took up this banjo
I was just a boy
The other fellas laughed at me
To bring along a toy
But I had some room
So I stuck it in my pack
I had a little room
So I stuck it in my pack.

Thanks for listening.

Bob
