Hi, friends and lovers of symphonic music. I have become a Sibelius fan in my older days and am apt to go to Lahti to listen to his fifth soon ! This is Alla Marcia from the Karelia Suite and .....well it always gives me goosebumps as it also makes something swell in my chest ( maybe I´m just proud to be a son of my country Finland, that gave birth to such a wonderful composer as Jean Sibelius ! There might be those of you who are familiar with this great symhonists work ! in any case, let the music just make your chest swell with joy, like it does with me !:)) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AIois3GaegkCheers Dani

I love the melody to Finlandia. We have several hymns in our United Methodist hymnal based on this wonderful piece of music. Sibelius wrote some beautiful music.

Yes, and extremely dynamic orchestral piece.
Absolute genius, there's no question about that.
Perhaps even under-rated.

Hi, John !:))
Thank you for commenting on this post !
Yes, he has a lot of very beautiful music ! I think one just has to take the time to really listen to it completely relaxed or in a concert hall with a big and good symphonic orchestra under a conductor with true knowledge of how Sibelius´music is to be played and interpreted !
Cheers Dani

Hi, Trevor !
Thank you for commenting on this and your most kind words regarding this magnificient symphonic piece by Sibelius and the genius himself, of course!:)) I don´t know if he is underrated as I think that among lovers of classic music most know his value but maybe many younger listeners are not so familiar with this great symphonist ? I have the belief that he is about to make a grand come back !!!! at least among us pensioners ???
Sad that so many of the young people don´t have a clue of how much they lose just listening to music that should not be called music at all !!!
Cheers Dani

Hi Dani. Yes you’re right! Sibelius is such an important and celebrated figure in not just Finnish music but world music too,I do hope young people can understand the greatness of this Scandinavian Master,I know I have admired Sibelius for decades now and have recently enjoyed the Lemminkainen (do excuse the spelling here!) legends especially The Swan Of Tuonela, what a magnificently haunting piece that is. All the best to you. Ricc.

Hi Dani. Yes indeed,I’ve grown very fond of the superb 5th symphony, especially the magnificent finale with that wonderful horn theme, sounding like great bells ringing out,I was moved on hearing that that great theme was inspired by a family of swans flying past Sibelius’s home in Ainola I think, also fascinating is the ending those massive big spaces out chords, very unusual and very powerful!

Hi, Ricc. !:))
How nice that you took to write a comment on the matter in question !:)) I can see that you are something of a connoiseur as you seem to have dug deeper into Sibelius music !! Swan of Tuonela is a beautiful piece, yes as is much more of his music too f.i. the whole Karelia Suite, Spring Song all his symphonies ( especially the 6th - a matter of taste naturally !)
I wish that we could be able over here to have concerts with Sibelius music every evening as they have Mozart concerts in Vienna ! Once a week at least so that I could take my foreign guests for a good concert when they come over to see me !!!!
Thank you for commenting !
Cheers Dani

Hi Dani. Glad to be of help Dani! An interesting idea having weekly performances of Sibelius music, there’s plenty of good stuff to choose from. I studied music history at school and have learnt plenty from books and tv/radio over the years, also I am fascinated that the great English conductor Sir Thomas Beecham who is well known for his championing of Delius was also a superb interpreter of Sibelius too,2 very different composers but both brilliant describers of nature. Nice chatting with you again. Ricc.

Hi, Ricc. !
Seems you´ve been really deep into the music of this great master ! I think I have read it somewhere that he favoured some English conductors and maybe orchestras also, but as we both know, there are quite many orchestras and conductors out there today that can make wonderful versions of his grandiose music ! F.i. Tampere philharmonics are doing a superb interpretation of f.i. the intermezzo from the Karelia Suite !!:))
Cheers Dani
