I ran across this link today on YouTube and wanted to share it with y'all. One thing you have to say about bluegrass is that they still honor their musical heroes as long as they live. Ralph Stanley is an icon of bluegrass and Patty Loveless has one of the best voices for bluegrass of anyone that's ever sung it. That's the music she was raised with not far from where I grew up. That long note Patty sings was a tribute to Ralph. That was his trademark. Patty nailed it!

Is it me, or did old Ralph involuntarily lick his lips @ 3:40 into the video when Patty looked at him and sang about opening up her "bosum"?
LOL. There's life left in that old man still! I'll have to admit,,, if Patty Loveless looked at me and sang about opening up her bosom while pulling her jacket back, I'd probably lick my lips too!
Tell me I'm wrong! I just caught that on the last couple of times of watching the video.

One of the great things about this video is that it illustrates the fluidity, (is that a word?), of bluegrass music because extended vocals or instrumentals are noticed by the other musicians and they follow it.
Trust me. The other musicians didn't know Patty was gonna do this, nor for how long.There probably wasn't one practice session for this song. And neither Patty or Ralph are a part of this group. They were just told to play "Pretty Polly".
I've been playing bluegrass for 35 years and it's one of the things I love about it. It's a living, breathing thing.

That's one of the things I miss about playing with my old friends. All were top knotch musicians and it wasn't uncommon for someone to add an extra bar or two to a solo or vocal without any prior notice and everyone stayed on it without missing a beat or a chord change.
I loved it.
I also love how Patty Loveless gives out those little squeals and yelps during the song. You can tell she's having a good time.
