When You Look At Him

Keeping the Dylan thing going....
I guess this is the "alt take" as I'm going with my guide vocal because I think it was more Dylanish than Leon's take.
I tried to be on the right side of parody - hope it works.

Leon - lyrics and backing vocal.
I sang, played rhythm, and lead gtr & harmonica.

The Band:

When You Look At Him

All these thoughts that are chasing around
And around inside my head
Conversations and observations
And all the books I’ve read
Don’t amount to a hill of beans
When all is said and done
Never will close the gap between us
No matter how fast I run

Never gonna see your eyes light up
Like they do when you look at him
Time to quit and cut my losses
Throw the towel in
Never gonna see you smile at me
The way you smile at him
Never gonna see your eyes light up
Like they do when you look at him

I have loved you from afar
Since we were back in school
Ironic that you said to me
That I was no one’s fool
I suspect you realise
All the longing I suppress
It makes you sad but not enough
To change anything I guess

Never gonna see your eyes light up
Like they do when you look at him
Time to quit and cut my losses
Throw the towel in
Never gonna see you smile at me
The way you smile at him
Never gonna see your eyes light up
Like they do when you look at him

I’ve been told you’re calculating
Self-absorbed and vain
That I’m not the only back up
You’ve got on a chain
But I’m not one to listen to
The gossip that I hear
I can’t believe someone so sweet
Could be so insincere

Never gonna see your eyes light up
Like they do when you look at him
Time to quit and cut my losses
Throw the towel in
Never gonna see you smile at me
The way you smile at him
Never gonna see your eyes light up
Like they do when you look at him

My friends are saying I can’t see
What’s right under my nose
But I have no desire to view
What they’re eager to expose
There are dreams we cling to
Thought we know they can’t be true
There are lies we tell ourselves
In order to get through

Never gonna see your eyes light up
Like they do when you look at him
Time to quit and cut my losses
Throw the towel in
Never gonna see you smile at me
The way you smile at him
Never gonna see your eyes light up
Like they do when you look at him

Yeah! This is great, guys smile

You should handle the lead vocal more often, Peter! I dig Leon's vocals of course but you have something special happening too.

Man, great lyrics! Love the harp and guitar work too.

Enjoyed!

Leon & Peter,

"There are dreams we cling to
Thought we know they can’t be true
There are lies we tell ourselves
In order to get through"

Nice write. Throughout.

The production works well. Sort of "defines an era".
This sounds like a lost track from The Band.
The vocal is nice!
The ending harp is terrific - perfect ending...

Y'all always deliver.

Peter & Leon,
Another excellent lyric... Leon does that wry observation thing as well as anyone I can think of.
This is the first time I`ve heard you lead the vocal, Peter and I like your twang- sure its Dylanesque, but its still all yours!
The rollicking backing is just right for the song - which is catchy as well as smart.
Cool, very cool.

Robert

Whoa....man, does that ever capture Dylan's mid 60's period...was that Al Kooper on the organ? smile

As Robert so well stated, "Leon does that wry observation thing as well as anyone I can think of"

And, you nailed that Dylanesque vocal feel. Something we should hear more of!

Nice guitar, write, vocals, harp...nice everything.

Well done y'all!!!

Really nice work smile As others mentioned, this definitely has a Dylan vibe to it. Love the backing tracks, love your vocals, and love the lyrics too. Nicely catchy and really powerful with its delivery as well.

Not a thing I'd change on this one - thanks for sharing smile

Great lyrics, especially the chorus. I wish I would have penned that. And yes, very Dylan.
