It's astounding what you got out of a trio. Love the contrast between the steady and simple drums and that funky wild bass (which reminds me of the great James Jamerson).

Very, very nice !!!

Hi Stefan,

As always I appreciate that you use some of your valuable time to listen and comment on my tracks.
I am afraid I don't know mr. Jamerson, but I will check his music now that you have introduced me to him.

Thank you very much for listening!

Really nice.
You know Earl Klugh? smile

Thanks for your nice comments!

I for sure know Earl Klugh. He was - along with guys like Pat Metheny and Joe Pass - one of those guitarists who inspired me a lot back in the 80's when I was playing guitar in a jazz band myself.

I got to know his talent through the the song "Keep your eye on the Sparrow" which he made with people like Lee Ritenour, Steve Gadd, Louis Johnson and others. I have always loved funk music and that song is a classic in my country.

I have always wanted to travel to the US and attend his annual "Weekend of Jazz", but unfortunately never had the chance to do it. I don't even know if he is still doing those events or if it is a thing of the past.

Thank you for listening!

Hello Will,

JJ is not very well-known among nob-bass-players, but he is a legend for everyone who ever dealt with that instrument. He was the bass player of the 'funk Bros,' the band that acompaied practically any of the great Motown artists. In the beginning he played the 'harmless' way that was normal then, but from a certain point he changed his style and invented a completely new way of playing bass. You might describe it as 'playong around the song melody' with hardly no repetitions which was never heard of before.

Songs like 'For Once In My Life' and "I Was Made to Love Her" have been an extreme challenge for bass players ever since:

For Once In My Life (Bass Cover)

I Was Made To Love Her (Bass Cover)

JJ was a very tragic figure though: He became a strong alcoholic.

The following Marvin Gaye song (Anti Vietnam war song) was recorded with him being completely drunk, lying in the floor, but nevertheless these bass lines are legendary:

What's Going On (Bass Cover=

There's a movie about him and the Funk Bros., called 'Standing In The Shadow Of Motown' - maybe they have it on Netflix. A very good documentation.

Have a pleasant sunday and all the best to you,

Stefan

Hi Will,

I agree with Christian. You use so little but you accomplish a great deal. This is a very enjoyable journey.

Hi Stefan,

Thank you for all the information. I of course knew the "funk Bros" - just didn't know that he was the bass player.

I will try to find the movie 'Standing In The Shadow Of Motown'. Don't think I will have much luck with NetFlix as the number of films we can see in Denmark is limited compared with other countries.

Hi Will,

since I'm not into Neflix myself I can't even tell if they offer it here. Buf I just saw that Amazon offers it as a free stream to Prime customers here in Germany. And, wow, the original 2002 DVDs have become very expensive meanwhile...

All the best to you and your 'gang',

Stefan

Thank you very much, Greg (and I'm sorry for answering a bit late - work is hectic these days).

I appreciate that you took the time to listen to the track!
