I have about five work-in-progress songs in development but I wanted to start and finish a new one in one day just to break the logjam, and this is what I came up with. I've always liked the line in the movie The Silence of the Lambs when the Senator says about Lecter, "take this animal back to Baltimore". So I used that line and wrote a song around it about some guys from my town who struck out on their own to Nashville and Austin many years ago. One in particular is roughing it out there still. He sleeps in a van and does small gigs around the country. My hat is off to him but I know it must be a hard life.

I used:

PopH085 Slow Rock Ballad
Real drums - Nashville Even 8
Real tracks - 518:Bass
Real tracks - 365: Guitar, acoustic
Real tracks - 362: Guitar, acoustic strumming
Real tracks - 542: Guitar electric

Me - Yamaha PSRE403, routed into Mixcraft 5 via Cl1 interface.
Me - vocal, routed from SP1 mic into Mixcraft 5 via Cl1 interface.

I'm sorry I don't use Soundcloud like most of you do. I have always used Soundclick and Bandcamp. I was going to set up a Soundcloud account but it looks like it cost money and I really don't listen to any music online other than the songs here and from Youtube, so it's probably too late in the game to change over to Soundcloud now.

Anyway, if you don't mine listening to my song on Bandcamp (you have to push the button to play it), here is:

Back to Baltimore

Thanks for any listens and comments.

Back to Baltimore

When your road has run out
And rivers have run dry
And no one will buy your song
No matter how you try

When you feel the failures
Or cut down to the bone
Come on back to Baltimore
It's always your home

I know you are a dreamer
And music guides your soul
But life is hard in Nashville
And soon it takes its toll

But you are not a stranger
You'll never be unknown
Come on back to Baltimore
It's always your home

You are truly missed here
We never turned away
We never looked down on you
Or had bad things to say

You are never stranded
Or lost and all alone
Come on back to Baltimore
It's always your home

You are not abandoned
Our love for you has grown
Come on back to Baltimore
It's always your home
It's always your home

This is really beautiful! Don't worry about Bandcamp/Soundcloud or anything, I - for one - love listening to good music, wherever it is!

And this IS good music. Beautiful song, beautiful encouragement to your friends, letting them know they always have a place in your heart. Musicians can be a stubborn bunch, especially when it comes to their music (for good or bad!), so this is a really touching piece. Brightened up my morning - thanks for sharing it with us!

Really good song! I like your arrangement and also your lyrics. Vocal sounds good as does the mix.

The best I've heard from you I think, enjoyed!

Regarding soundcloud, there is a pro account which you have to pay for, but you can also setup a free account, quite a few of the people here have free accounts over there.

A pleasant, gentle sound to the tracks. Very nicely done. A good mix.

A good write. It gets its point across without being crowded or overly poetic. Solid.

I like this. It has a gentle country folk sound to it.

Regarding Sound cloud.... it's free as far as I know. You can start posting there but it's like any other site... what ever makes you happy. And as long as we can stream the music.... it's all good.

Nice job on the song.

Good set of lyrics, especially the chorus.

Good band choice; it fits the mood of the song.

I would call this a working musician's dream as it details the hardship of a gigging musician. It can be a hard unforgiving undertaking but one can always go home.

I really liked your vocal on this and the sparse backing track fits it perfectly.

A very pleasant country folk sound and a touching message I'm sure your friends would be pleased to hear. I particularly like the chorus.

Cool tune.
Lyrics & message straight forward stuff. Good arrangement. Definitely has meat on the bone.

Comments.... I felt as the tempo was slightly off, for my taste, for this particular tune. Meaning, I would prefer to hear this tune either faster, which will likely tighten vocals or slower, which will give you opportunity to relax your voice and do it good ol L.Cohen style. Thank you for sharing.

Misha.

Hello Jptjptjpt,

Ambience composition. Your melody is very sweet and pleasant. Good arrangement. The slightly faster tempo might be an idea to think about

What a great story about the song, and a really amazing work as a result, especially for one day! You sound like the best kind of friend, jptjptjpt. Well said and well sung. Hope your friends in Nashville get to enjoy it.

Great tribute to your friend...hard to imagine more difficult times than now for musicians that were already living on the margin.

Glad you broke the logjam! We enjoyed the result.

No problem using BandCamp.

Nice write, good production. As floyd jane said: solid.

Vocal control, you say. Never heard of it. Is that some kind of ProTools thing?

Lovely song.
The arrangement is good. I think I agree with Rustyspoon re tempo.
The vocal seems to be a little "thick" room sound or something.
I THINK it may be that you could reduce the "mud" with EQ and. possibly, add a little "air" as well.
Good song.

Cheers
