After the hurricanes and my computer being down for weeks there were updates on pretty much everything but I believe the culprit for this problem is Win 10 update 2004 which now makes Reaper, Cakewalk, BIAB and Realband have crackles and pops no matter where I set latency - actually higher makes it even worse.
I have run LatencyMon and it says audio should be fine but it's not. I have sample rates set to 24 bit 41,000. I have IDT sound disabled. The good old EMU was working perfectly before the update. And windows troubleshooting says I'm using the best driver. The weird thing is I thought I had it fixed when I disabled the IDT Audio which had gotten turned back on with that update - but it was short lived and then the crackles and pops returned.
These pops and crackles drive me nuts and I can't make any music or upload anything or even enjoy just listening. I don't have time for this - I'm trying to find a decent contractor to fix my house (that's a rant for another thread. )
I've read so many threads with other people haVing this problem and nothing they did fixed it so I'm hoping Microsoft will step up if that's true.
Try 16-bit, 44.1K and see if it goes away. At least then you would know if the bit rate or sampling rate would be disagreeing with Windows. Then maybe change one or the other to narrow it down further.
all programs playing up suggests it's system sound related. once you've tried the change to sample and bit rate (and hopefully it works but if not) it might be worth trying your motherboard's onboard sound to eliminate the emu card and driver being the problem
i had driver problems with an old creative card and before i got hacked drivers which cured the problem i was forced to use onboard sound to get anything sounding like decent
You mentioned drivers that were reenabled, a common problem from Windows updates. But did you look for other Sound devices besides your desired sound card? Things like HD Audio for monitors can cause this behavior.
BIAB 2025 Win Audiophile. Software: Studio One 7 Pro, Swam horns, Acoustica-7, Notion 6, Song Master Pro, Win 11 Home. Hardware: Intel i9, 32 Gb; Roland Integra-7, Presonus 192 & Faderport 8, Royer 121, Adam Sub8 & Neumann 120 monitors.
Don't believe everything that Windows trouble shooting reports. I have had cases where it said that I have the best drivers loaded but when I went to my cards manufacturer's sites they had newer drivers. I would go to your sound card and video card sites and look for new drivers. Note that I have read that video drivers can mess up audio; I don't know for sure as it has never happened here.
Unclear if the pianist is a total beginner or a professional jazz player?
64 bit Win 10 Pro, the latest BiaB/RB, Roland Octa-Capture audio interface, a ton of software/hardware
Mario, yes, the HD Audio drivers I mentioned are for video - for monitors (the seeing kind) that have built-in speakers. These drivers should be disabled.

The lowest 16 bit choice is 88,200. The default shared setting is 24bit 48,000. Changing it to 24 bit 41,000 or leaving it doesn't make any difference. It's set to play whatever bit depth and sample rate each DAW or app calls for.

I have IDT High Definition Audio Codec disabled.

I'm gonna check into that Mario. I just wish there was a way to keep the security updates and roll back the rest because it was working perfectly before.
A requirement of minimum 88k with a 16-bit setting is just crazy.
You said your sound card is an EMU. That’s an old card by Creative Labs, yes? Which model? It’s possible it is no longer supported by Windows 10. Have you checked the vendor’s website for this?

0404 USB it's one of those old classics audiophiles still love if they can find one. Or so I've read on forums. Yeah I thought even a choice of that setting was nuts too.
My concern is that it's not just me and my old Emu. There seems to be a smorgasbord of interface brands having the same issue and nothing fixing it. So I'm wondering if it's something to do with the AMD processor or the on board graphics or something else before I toss the old gal out.

Maybe this will help; it is 0404 Win 10 1903 and above drivers:
I'll second those who mentioned not trusting Windows Update for drivers - often I've seen Windows Update install "updated" drivers that are older than the currently installed driver. It happens a lot less with Windows 10 than earlier versions, but still something to watch for.
Windows 10 version 2004 has actually been very stable for me in regards to audio software.
For anyone who might have a similar issues in the future:
This is going to sound really strange I bet, but is the computer that you are running Windows 10 on perhaps a laptop? There are some things that can be checked such as minimum processor states. A lot of laptops that run Windows 10 on them are set to 5% instead of 100%, and this seems to happen the most with laptops due to their options for how they operate when plugged in versus being on battery life. Even if you aren't running these programs from a laptop, it could still be worth checking out. Setting the minimum and maximum processor states to 100% has certainly resolved this issue for others. It may not for you, but it is definitely worth trying so I do suggest looking into that if you haven't yet.

Thanx for this reminder Ember. I just got my desktop music computer back from the shop and sure enough the minimum setting was 5%. I had forgotten about that setting.

Setting the processor state will increase power consumption and heat in the computer, so it's only recommended to do this if you have a problem, and only to leave it set to 100% if it fixes the problem. I would personally recommend moving it up in increments from 5% rather than going straight to 100%, and if it doesn't fix your problem, set it back to 5%.
Another potential solution is to set the task priority to Above Normal or perhaps High (but not Realtime, that can cause freezing). You can do this from the Details tab in the Windows Task Manager (screenshot attached). Again, this is something that if setting it higher doesn't help, leave it at Normal.

My production machine runs at 100%, but my backup machine overheats at 100 so I run that at 90% and the heat drops by about one-third. It’s easy to monitor the heat of various components with utilities.

I've waved the white flag and ordered a Motu M2 (display model for a discount) from Sweetwater. Should be here in a few days. I hope it plays nice with win 10.

According to their specs it should play nice with win 10:
ymmv of course. might be worth a test drive before buying. just make sure , like i always do, you can return it to the store if it dont play nice with your computer rig. also audient have the pricier id range. see audient.com just an idea. ps youll find audient users on gearslutz.com where loads of recording people hang out. lots of usb audio interface gear reviews.
all best, oldmuso.
ps just saw your M2 post. hope it works well for you. ive been looking at the M2, but decided to wait for usb4 to come out which is gonna be blazing fast apparently.

I've always been a fan of MOTU gear - still have a couple Firewire units of theirs (a Traveler MK1 that still works perfectly for my portable rig, and an 828mk3 with a dead firewire port that I have connected through ADAT to my RME Fireface).

I've got an old DDA console which was built by the Audient guys, sounds killer! Excellent mic pre's in it, and a really good EQ.
Update. So far so good. I haven't recorded anything yet or really put it through it's paces yet just got it yesterday but it's connected and working. There was a glitch with RealBand that seems to have resolved itself. It's a solid built good looking and good sounding little interface and love the meters on the front. The cord that comes with it is short - 3 ft. I'm going to need a longer one with my setup.
Okay, so the latest weirdness is that all sound is sped up and keyed up. Just a little below Alvin and the Chipmonks. I changed the sample rate from 48,000 to 41,000 in windows sound then rebooted and issue was temporarily resolved. Today it's back. Sheesh. Anybody new to music - save yourself and get a Mac. There is no reason other than windows screwiness that this should be happening. I'm too frustrated and going to just go watch Perry Mason. I'll be back.
Well, you should be able to track down why. First check the Windows, Settings, Sound. Also right click on your little speaker icon (taskbar, far lower right) and check that your system sound device is 16 bit, 44.1
Do you have any devices connected by optical or S/PDIF?

sundance. just ideas/stabs in the dark. in reaper plz tell me on upper right hand side what info does reaps say ? also , are you useing a one drive pc ? some pc deets would help. are you useing this song pc also for the net with all anti virus enabled also ? also am i correct in thinking you were recording with emu at 48 Khz ? if you are playing back projects in reaps that were recorded at 48k by emu make sure you use 48k rate in reaps. another thing. make sure you use same settings on motu as you were on emu. if emu set to 48khz. do same in motu control panel, and in reaps project settings. (i assume motu has a control panel of its own like most interfaces do.) also in reaps preferences plz tell me, does motu in // outs show as default asio device ?? i assume in main win control panel you have win playback and recording set to motu ? also another idea. plz run this test if you have a spare usb pen drive. 1. plug fast usb pen into a usb port. 2. point reaps at it , project save/recording path. in reaps set record to flac not wav. 3. record a singing trak in reaps (make sure to hit stop after recording.) and play it back. all ok. from pen drive ?? 4. while first trak playing back record another short trak. all ok ? any probs ? any crackles ? note. plz make sure you hit stop so you dont fill up pen drive.
ADDENDUM. sundance if youre still haveing probs. plz post screen shots back of the following . 1. your old emu control panel settings. 2. your win sound device settings. playback and record. 3. your motu control panel settings. 4. reapers preference settings for asio sound device motu. 5. reaper song project settings.
btw ive seen people have probs with all computer platforms. if we manage to get the prob sorted. please write down all settings in all control panels. thats what i do for my sanity lol.
best. muso.

Matt, I haven't figured out the why but it's the recording setting in windows that changed itself to 48,000. Everything else - fine. Changed that back restarted and all's fine again. I guess I should remember to check it every time I turn on the computer.
Since the win 10 2004 update I don't have a 16bit option. It's set to 24, 41,000. NO, just usb.
Yes, I assumed that but I had gone past to figure out why it was resetting the sample rate. One cause is mismatched settings. All your digital devices and all your running audio software (and all the king’s men) must use the same sample rate.

p7-1451 HP Pavillion Desktop, AMD Trinity Quad Core A10-5700, 10g Ram, Integrated Radeon HD7660D graphics, 2 TB HDD. you can see specs here: https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c03509216 Upgraded to win 10. Other than running louder than my previous one, it's been a great pc. I can't get a new one - too much property damage and expense after two hurricanes - so it'll have to do a while longer.
BTW, I did all the USB troubleshooting settings on the Motu site and everything on the Optimizing your PC for audio on windows 10. The only known problem I have now is the recording setting in windows changing itself which effects ALL sound not just DAWs.
As an aside, I watched a youtube video yesterday with a long winded normally slow talking host of a seminar that I didn't mind was sped up. So I watched him sped up and didn't worry about changing it back 'til that was over. LOL!
sundance. it is very difficult for myself and other users to diagnose, and offer appropriate solutions without knowing the settings i requested in my previous post. ie. the ADDENDUM (win sound settings and other settings etc etc.) as well as the reaper top right hand info i requested. it gives people a complete picture of your system. and allows more accurate recommendations/comments. also there is a reason for the usb pen test. its another clue.
you say win is changeing your recording settings. what settings ? need screen shots. default sound device ? sampling rate etc etc ??
all i can say right now is i looked up the specs of your pavilion. my comments are as follows. 1. you are doing every task off one drive. win is useing same drive. i would recommend you look at putting in a second drive. BUT THIS TIME A SSD. i went to several sites on the net (eg crucial), and confirmed your pav should be able to take a ssd. THUS. you would keep win on the current 2 TB drive, and use the new ssd drive for recording duties etc. the advantage of this being win cannot interrupt the recording tasks. win can do its own thing. ssd's can be had for as low as 50 buks. just make sure a good pc tech installs it.
in summary , one drive for win and one for song creation. 2. your pav has a variety of usb ports. is motu on a usb 3 or usb 2 port ? 3. in win device manager , are there any warning flags ? OR is all clean/no flags. 4. although your system is old i dont see why it cant be fixed up providing you dont want to do songs with a ton of traks and massive sample libs out the whatever as well as loads of cpu hogging plug ins. a smart move is to get into js low useage plug ins in reaps. if you doubt me talk to other users at reaper.fm. there is gold in them there plug ins if you learn them. look up in sound on sound reaper channel strip for example. lots of info on youtube also.
all i can say extra is i personally use 2 systems (with ssd's). i'm ssd all the way. my pc's boot very fast.
sys1, my recording pc, never sees win 10 updates or the web, and i never get probs. sys2, second pc is used to web surf. which i'm useing now to write this to you. recently my wife and i have been useing more and more and testing out the latest 80 buk amazon fire tablet for the web. its great. i'm impressed. very fast.
merry xmas/every happiness. hth. muso. ps years ago i was doing lots of songs on a pc inferior to yours. recording with pg powertraks at that point. BUT i had two hd's. one for win, and one for song creation.

Have you tried making sure the new interface is turned on before booting the PC? Sometimes it's as simple as making sure Windows/DAW boots up knowing it has the interface available. Otherwise it may try booting to some onboard device/setting or a default.
I do not work here, but the benefits are still awesome Make your sound your own!
Just for the record, I am happy to report the latest win update fixed the sped up audio. Thanks to all of you who tried to help. I appreciate it. Glad microsoft finally resolved the problem.
