I read up on the settings as for the subject above and I think I understand what it's about...but...

Just as an example, in a 32 bar standard tune with 4 bars of Eb being the desired sequence (bars 17-20), BIAB insists on playing (Eb, Eb9, Eb, Eb9) as a variation which I just don't need or want.

BIAB is not just adding a passing chord as a segue to the next chord, by the way, its changing the nature of the desired chord.

So, I experimented with ''simple'' and ''freeze'' and it still persists in playing its variation, which does not fit the fairly uncomplicated melody, so I'm baffled.

Welcome to the forum.

What you are hearing sometimes depends on the style. Also, if you are using MIDI you are more likely to hear exactly what you wrote than if this is a RealTrack(s).

Some things you can try:

Experiment with other styles.

Use a more complex chord, such as E9 (if that sound is acceptable). This leaves less to chance. For example, I often use a 9 chord rather than a 7, to prevent the program from playing 7(b9) or 7(#9).

Repeat the chord each measure.

Look up Natural Arrangement and turn it off for this song, or globally.

You say you found Simple. There are a few places that applies. One is in the RealTracks picker. Another is in I think Preferences, Arrange where you can look for something like Simple or Jazz Down. I’ll look for the specific command later.

There may be a few other things but try those. BIAB is only trying to make a nice accompaniment, and it was originally developed for jazz.

Freeze means it will not try any other choices, so only use that if it plays what you do want. You can freeze individual tracks, so if only one track is a problem, freeze the others and keep regenerate/play; you might get lucky (then freeze that track).

BIAB can be challenging. You’ll get there.

What genre is the song? What style did you try?

Hi Matt,

I'm a jazz player, but I use BIAB to merely accompany myself as I practice a new melody/song. I don't use it on the job.

I use almost exclusively, ''Bogey - Slow Swing Ballad''. as the style closest to what I hear on the bandstand. I have used other styles, but Bogey is my choice. MIDI is not used.

The melody in question, is fairly simple - 32 bars in Eb - (ie) 2x16. Because the melody is so simple in structure, any variation from what I programme, stands out immediately.

I'm used to a banjo supplying the chords in the 6 piece outfit I play with. The banjo player will play passing chords occasionally, but will not change to anything other than what is in our book.

PS...I'm new to BIAB 2016, but have used a fairly basic 1998 version, up until about two weeks ago. I didn't have this problem with 1998...but it's much simpler. The supplied manual does not seem to answer my query in a way that is clear to me.

Thanks again...

Ok, let us know how you make out. One thing: I don't believe version 2016 had Natural Arrangement, so you can disregard that.

It's the banjo track that is adding the ninth? I would not have expected that to be the offending instrument. But I've never even listened to BIAB banjo tracks so I have no idea. Not much banjo in Brazilian jazz.

doddsy.
any biab things i come across/dont like i just sort out in my daw multitrack software.
so if i want Eb for example , i just export from biab the audio,
wipe out the bars i dont want and sub in ther bars i do via
simple copy and paste. and once happy play along with the result. after editing.
i did this the other day in a rock song.
didnt want the biab 9th , so deleted it in the daw and subbed
in a straight major chord.

best.

I didn't know I could change the guitar to banjo Matt. I could on the old BIAB, but the sound was very unconvincing.

I'm not sure where I can find the changing commands, but I'll scout around. If I have success I'll certainly reply.

Thanks...JK

Thanks oldmuso,

I'm another old muso...maybe older than you even, as I have no idea what DAW is, or does. If it's on BIAB2016, I guess I can find it.

DAW means Digital Audio Workstation. It is an audio software program designed to load and/or record and mix tracks and effects. Examples include Cubasis, Reaper, Cakewalk by Bandlab, Studio One. RealBand is a basic DAW and comes free with BIAB, and it reads BIAB files and gives a few features not available elsewhere.

One of the effects you might use in a DAW is a program called Melodyne, in which you could alter or remove an offending audio note. Good bye, 9th.

About banjo, I was confused by your question. I read too quickly. I though you meant there was a banjo in that BIAB style. I see now you meant it is a guitar (and in your own band, you have a banjo player). Yes, actually, there might be a way you could take a guitar and change the sound to a banjo, though I don't think I would recommend it! You can certainly look for a RealTrack banjo and insert it into your song, and mute the guitar. There are a few other possibilities.

I think the majority of us here are 70 or so... I am.

Try this, in that track menu > Track Actions > Save As Performance Track
then in the Audio menu up the top > Move Performance Track to Audio
click the Audio Edit, enable Snap
highlight the Eb9 bar/s right click "Cut"
highlight the Eb bar/s right click "Copy"
set cursor at start of the Eb9 bar/s right click "Paste"
Save.
