It seems to me as though pop, rock, country and jazz are well-provided for in terms of Real Tracks, but why are we left with so few for classical, folk and new age. I use these genres about 50% of the time and it's very limiting.
More of these real tracks please, PG!
Thanks

I agree, some classical instruments and styles would be very nice.

classical instruments are usually played by highly trained musicians and thus not cheap. I am not saying that non-classical can be any less pro, but usually you don't just call a classical cellist to just jam on your guitar tracks. It's not just the instrument, but what the classical performer plays, too... a guitarist might simply wing it, but a classical musician follows certain rules known generally only to classical musicians or whoever studied some classical, and they try not to throw in the music anything that is not necessary. Wide topic....
As for the other two, yeah they should be there. I really like folk and new age too, although 'new age' can mean a lot of different things....some people call rock-fusion 'new age' , which seems strange to me

And some areas of jazz fusion are referred to as 'new age' in the demo and style info.
There's lots of folk styles from around the world that would be good to have but perhaps as avatars suggests getting decent Real Tracks would mean finding specialist players for these genres as well.
Other factors like the North American bias come into it naturally enough I suppose; (it would be intersting to know the geographical/demographic breakdown of BIAB users around the world). But as was suggested this is primarily a jamming rather than composing/arranging program. Lots of classical can be simple accompaniment for soloists too of course so its not an excuse just another example of the market the program is aiming for.
I suppose if enough people bumped this then they might do something about it, so count me in.
Regards
Alan

"Folk music" is probably even harder to pin down than "new age", there is so much variety. A folk style that I would like on Real Tracks is the 50's - 60's folk revival style typified by the Brothers Four, Wayfarers, Kingston Trio, etc. There was a strummed banjo style that was unique to their sound.
Other good folk banjo styles are clawhammer and Pete Seeger's uppicking. Scruggs and melodic styles are more popular but not very folky sounding.

I hope we are not going to mix them. My ALL TIME PET PEEVE. Pavarotti, who I love dearly (though departed), singing Danny Boy. I'm sorry, it's wrong. Italian folk songs ok. And a mezzo-soprano trying to sing Bob Dylan. Shoot me now.
Now that that is off my alleged chest, I'm all for Classical. I'm great with folk.
I'm too old for New Age.
Dan, a question, can you choose upper banks on the ketron if you go direct from the EWI with a midi cable? I have a JV1010 and was messing with that and I can twist the wee knob and change from a violin to an organ, but the Ketron limits me, unless I stick the computer between the EWI and the Ketron, which I don't like to do.
I guess it's going to be expensive to get Yo Yo Ma (sounds like a rapper's buddy's Mom) to lay down the cello parts, but man it's going to be good.
I wonder if someday they can write a piece of software to extract all the licks from some genre and player and use them to build the library.. man imagine that. Every Gordon Lightfoot song, the guitar sliced out, and used to build RealTracks. We know that if someone told us what we would be doing now 15 years ago guys with white coats and a straight jacket would have shown up.

I'm curious what people have in mind for "classical" RealTracks. Are the RealTracks versions of styles like CHAMBER1.STY?
If so, doesn't the melody still end up being MIDI? Either half the song isn't realistic because it's MIDI, or you've already got a great orchestral library... so why would you need RealTracks?
So what are people envisioning using "classical" RealTracks to create?

Back up tracks like hollywood strings. You can hear big orchestras behind pieces done like even the Beatles on some tracks. And can't we hope the melody will someday be a Realtrack? And who doesn't like the timbre of a properly tuned kettle drum?
The bassoonist would be able to lay down tracks and not have the double reed drive him/her mad.!

I suppose one could say this about any style, when you are speaking of adding a melody without recording live...
RealTracks of any instrument and any style add more toys to play with, IMHO.

I guess my confusion was whether the track would be a "stand alone" sort of track (like many of the "classical" MIDI styles), or something that could be used to add a string track to a pop song.
It sounds like this thread is asking for the former - that is, a RealTrack which would sound very much like a stand-alone track recorded by a small orchestra, rather than a string track which could added to a song.

That's what I'd like, David. I've thought for awhile now that we could have styles based on both a musician and an instrument block, e.g., Mozart strings, Mozart woodwinds, Mozart piano; Tchaikovsky strings, Tchaikovsky brass; Beethoven strings, Beethoven brass, Beethoven piano, Beethoven woodwind; and so on. That way we could {a} put different intensities into the styles -- e.g., 1st movement of the Moonlight Sonata for "a", 2nd movement for "b" -- and {b} build up as much or as little of an orchestral style as we'd like, simply by multitracking. Need a full thunderous orchestra? Use all of the styles for a composer. Need just a woodwind section? Just use that style.
I know it will take awhile, but I do think it's the most flexible way of doing it. Shrug. Just my thoughts.

I would be very pleased to start with just a realistic rendering of the string track by actual string section players. There would probably have to be several variations of articulations, tremolo etc. but it would make an immediate difference in the composer's demos I do.
