When I playback in RealBand, I keep getting a "drum solo" and the above error message. In the log it is described as: "Windows Audio Session error: Could not select the default input device. The error number is -9985 [2021.838.0, 1/5/2022 8:10:00 PM]"
I suppose it has to do with the fact that I only play back and don't have a recording device connected. But my experience is still limited and I don't know how to solve the problem. It's irritating because I have to restart BB every time.
Help appreciated!

You mention Realband, then restarting BB, which is it? Band in a Box, or Realband .. they are two different programs
Windows Audio Session error is the WAS driver. Maybe try MME or ASIO and see if it persists
I do not work here, but the benefits are still awesome Make your sound your own!

Hello Bent, are you using RealBand or RealBand64?
An error about not being able to select the input device could be because of not having a microphone. Or if your computer has a built in microphone, it could have to do with the system being set on the wrong sampling rate.
Right click on the Windows Start menu and choose Run, then enter "control mmsys.cpl sounds" and press OK. This will open up the Windows Sound control panel.
Under the Playback tab, choose your default audio device (with the Green checkmark), then click on Properties. Go to the Advanced tab and choose 16-bit 44100 Hz (CD Quality) and click OK. If there is only the option of 24-bit 44100 Hz (Studio Quality), choose that instead. While we're here, uncheck the option to "Allow applications to take exclusive control of this device".
Next, do the same on the Recording tab with the device that has the Green checkbox. Click Properties, go to the Advanced tab, and choose 16-bit 44100 Hz (CD Quality) and click OK. If there is only the option of 24-bit 44100 Hz (Studio Quality), choose that instead. While we're here, uncheck the option to "Allow applications to take exclusive control of this device".
Once that is done, click OK on the Sound window, then go back to RealBand and make sure it is working.
Best, Chantelle

Thanks, Chantelle
I’m using RealBand64 (64-bit)
I don’t use an external microphone with my desktop, but I do attend online meetings, so I guess my computer has a built in microphone. And I actually get an error message about the wrong sampling rate every time I log into RB – I just didn’t know what that meant or what I should do about it.
Unfortunately my settings seem to be different than what you’re anticipating. Under the Playback tab … Advanced, there is only the option of 16-bit 48000 Hz.
Under the Recording tab, no audio devices are installed.
So I seem to be stuck unless you can help me further.
By the way, Rharv points out that I’ve not made a distinction between BB and RealBand, and that they’re two different systems. The truth is I’ve never been quite clear on the relationship between the two, or when you would use one rather than the other. I use them only to accompany me when I play mainstream jazz on my saxophone.
/Bent PS: I hope this reply comes out right - I did sth. wrong the first time

Can you post pictures of the recording and playback windows so that we can see what you're describing? RealBand is a DAW program with a layout that is meant for recording your own tracks. Whereas Band-in-a-box is an arranger program. However, there have been many improvements to Band-in-a-Box that make it easier for recording than in previous years. This page goes over the differences between RealBand, Band-in-a-Box, and PowerTracks: https://www.pgmusic.com/salesfaq1.htm#6
