My computer is bugging me to upgrade to Win 11 - has anybody had any trouble with that?

I usually don't upgrade right away. You know, the cutting edge can be the bleeding edge.

Plus, I'm in the middle of getting 2 disks and 5 or more fake disks to release as soon as they are triple checked.

I don't know how many times I can put this off, it has bugged me 3 times so far.

But if nobody is having any problems, I might do a complete disk image and let it rip.

Thanks,

There's been a few posts on this topic recently.

Member Steve seems to be a bit of a Guru on this

Microsoft do state what's in and what's out in the Windows 11 release, but I don't think any of them are big game-changers.

I did transition over Chritmas and all works smoothly, including various over 10 years old pieces of software. However,I had to buy a new computer, as the previous one was not compatible...

MAJ WIN 11 perfect and without problem. EVERYTHING really works without any problem. In addition very fast update compared to the old ones.

I don't think you have too much to worry about. I think by now all the niggles that people had with Win 11 have been fixed by Microsoft. I am on the beta release team and I see new versions coming in thick and fast.

All the drivers I was using on Win 10 have carried over to Win 11 with no problems. I can still run an ancient M-Audio Delta 1010 with drivers meant for Windows 7 - still works. The only problem is that the Delta internal interface needs a PCI slot and that means a PC that is not readily Win 11 compliant (Too old amongst other things). Using other methods to bypass the MS requirements I did install Win 11 on this machine and both the computer and the Delta card worked well. The motherboard actually gave up which now turns a good audio interface into an antique item for my shelf cos no computers have PCI anymore.

Like you I do use computers live and Win 11 has worked fine on my newer computers like my Surface Pro which can play VSTi's live if I wish. I would not use a computer like the old one mentioned above for reliability reasons.

Should you?

Here's another point of view. What are the system requirements people are talking about?

I had NO trouble upgrading my desktop.

My laptop refuses to upgrade. It is old and slow and does not meet the minimum requirements.

Nice thing about it is Windows 11 recognized the problem and backed out without damage.

Notes, it was quite easy, painless and mostly for the better. Some little nagging things about context menus that just take getting used to. There are some articles around on how to get it back to the old style if you liked that better. But it runs nicely, is fast and all my software worked fine with no tweaks needed.

Just search for Win 11 requirements for the full details. MS backed off some of the strictest stuff before release, but you still need a newer computer or newish at least.

Bob, as far as your original concern, I would assume you can ignore the nag to upgrade for several months. I don't think you'll be forced to upgrade for some time.

I'm not sure that they can force one to upgrade, though after I'd done a motherboard upgrade on this PC and when later I had to try to reinstall Win7, it refused to install (Though it had previously run for years). Then, the answer was to install Win10 using the Win7 product key. Note, though, that this machine is multi-boot, with two flavours of Linux and the Win10 and I was able to set up a VirtualBox under Linux and install Win7 there (I need to be able to run many older OSs for software testing).

I also still have machines running Win2000 and Win8.1.
I occasionally use an embedded PC with WinCE-3.11 on it.

Your right about that, Steve. 60 days is a lifetime in the fast paced world of operating systems. I think I'll wait and see what the next month brings.

By the way, the NEXT major update for Windows 11 is in February. New update, new issues. I'd let Windows 11 mature a little more.

My laptop upgraded to Win11 Wednesday. I've had ZERO real problems. I just had to spend a little time getting used to the UI changes. I remembered to deauthorize Gig Performer and reauthorize after the update. Even regular authorization "losers" like Addictive Drums and Addictive Keys survived the upgrade without losing their authorized status.

I don't like the disappearance of the Windows Accessories folder (I had to pin Character Map to the taskbar (I moved to France recently and use it regularly)), but that's a minor thing.

I don't know why, but I'm really liking the rounded corners on window "frames". I also like the new default Windows sounds. More pleasant to my ear.

I'm on a high speed new laptop with an SSD C: drive, so haven't noticed any increase in boot speed.

You can get some of the "old" stuff back if you want. there are some good articles around about how to do that. Just a quick search away. Some people get used to certain stuff and it is only natural to want it back. I know I do or did, I did some of the very minor fixes needed to have menus a certain way etc.

Thanks, that's good to know.

The nag seems to come twice a week now, but easy to dismiss.

The computer is a ThinkPad T15, and it's almost a year old. I suspect it has the requirements.

When I do the upgrade, I'll make a disk image first, so if it causes trouble, I'll be able to get back, get back, get back to where I once belonged.

When you do these images, how long does it take. Do you do incremental backups as well? Every time to talk about this I can't imagine why you would back up the same thing over and over and over when an incremental backup will just update anything that changed since the last time. The OS itself, well, if you get hosed by a botched upgrade, you are going to have to format the drive anyway.

Are you talking about the "Boot to a command prompt and image everything including OS", like with what I used in the old days (Norton Ghost, Disk Image, etc... Is Ghost even still around?) when you speak of imaging? (Because as we all know you can't backup files that are in use so you can't backup Windows FROM Windows.) For your image to be 100% accurate you'd have to do that every time you add files to it. Like, daily. You run a disk image every day?

I haven't done any such imaging in probably 2 decades. I do backups of files from a batch file I have here somewhere that looks for doc, txt, odt, jpg, etc and only copies new files, but I never cared about backing up my OS. I have a Windows 10 ISO file so in an emergency I can reinstall. Let me find wood to knock on before I say that I haven't had to do disaster recovery in so long that I don't know if I can find the boot CD with the DOC client on it. There's probably better ways to do all that but since I quit working in 2013 I haven't stayed up on things. The biggest thing I have done lately was when I moved my concerts and movies off spinning media onto 1 TB SSDs because they perform MUCH better with almost no buffering. And, when Windows wanted to look for updates it would spin up all 3 spinning drives to find which one had the OS on it, every hour! 1am, 2 am, 3am... whiiirrrrrrr...tick tick tick. Every technician I talked to said "All you have to do it....." and I tried what they suggested and nothing defeated that. I disables automatic updating and it still did it. I finally had enough and $250 later I don't get bothered by that anymore. Plus as I was watching anything from those drives every 30 seconds or so I heard a tick as the drive spun slightly to fill the3 VLC buffer that allows smooth playback.

Eddie, I use Macrium Reflex for cloning my HDs:

https://www.macrium.com/reflectfree

I tested the free version on my laptop by cloning the HD to an external and replaced the internal with the cloned external HD. Everything was perfect. I have since purchased it even though I didn't have to; I like to support software that works.
