This might be a bit "dated". Written in 1980 (best guess). I was a lot younger. I was listening to a lot of Billy Joel, so there may be some influence there. (He could get snarky now and again...) A great song is a great song. I don't think WHEN it happened has too much to do with it. And I will explain a bit.
You mentioned Billy Joel. I still very much love A LOT of his music. To me, it doesn't sound dated so much as it sounds from a time. I find that with songs I tend to like. They just don't have that "trendy" sound of an era so much as the sound of an era. This is probably making no sense. It's more about using TOO MUCH of something in a song than using it. A great song can have the "sounds" of an era without overdoing it. To me, that's what it's about. There are songs in the 80's that used synth drums in a great way (my opinion), then there were many that took it too far and made it a cliché type of sound. The same could be said for reverb of that time. EVERY era has these. The difference is in knowing how to use various elements.
ALL of that being said, your song is excellent in every aspect. It's a whole song put together by someone that has the knowledge of how to do that. It's the production, it's the instruments, chord choices, the lyrics...all of it.
When you put all of that away and just listen like a kid who doesn't know or care about that stuff. It's a memorable song. I think we as musicians forget that. Not only in what we produce, but in what others do as well. It's fun to pull back the reigns and just enjoy a song. That's what this song was for me.
If I had to pick it apart, it's great. If I can take myself away from that, it's great.
There is a big difference between dated and reminiscent.
Don't want to forget to mention the art work! It's great you can express yourself in so many ways. Really nice piece there as well.
Thanks for the share. I really enjoyed it!

The band is heavy --many instruments-- but I believe I hear them all very well. So wonderfully written and delivered. You were obviously born with this magic, Floyd. Each and every song you write is worthy of listening to over and over. Remember albums? There have been so very few that I could say every song is a winner. [I remember scratching the Double Fantasy album so it would just play the Lennon songs] You are remarkable and unique, and very encouraging to the rest of us. Thanks.

Another wonderful song. Always hard to follow a HTL review, so what he said.
Great vocal, hook and sound.

Floyd,
You may have been just a pup back in 1980, but you were writing like a seasoned veteran! Every single chorus you write is memorable and sticks like glue! Your vocal in this is as good or better than any of your work! The background vox are sitting so sweet in the mix that I had to mention it!
A wonderful production from start to end with everything where it should be!
Thanks, Torrey

I really like this. To me it is interesting to hear what people did all the way in the beginning of their arc. If you had told me you wrote this yesterday I would have believed it. That is not to say it is too old or too young. But it is "characteristic." It is just very interesting to me that you have a knack for these "heart-tugging" hooks that seems to have been with you from the beginning, and you have a few similar themes that run through a lot of your work--at least to me. It is not exactly "redemption"--but more like "Hey, let's try to have a redemptive take on this situation, honey, since we don't have much to lose." Or something like that, I think. Good one man.

You were probably born humming a brand new tune Floyd. BIG band this time but it doesn't sound BIG in the overblown, overly busy sense. The arrangement fits the tune like it ought. Sweet melody, strong vocal delivery and another narrative that digs into the differences that bring/hold folk together.

Well, you certainly know how to write a lyric. And a tune. And then arrange it. And mix it. Drums are fun to listen on this on. Nice builds. Everything fits nicely, including the piano bits. Catchy chorus. Vocals sound excellent. I like the mandolin on the intro - it announces the song as Country. The interplay between the piano and drums is cool - the arrangement has a very "open" sound. Fun song! What size is the artwork? It looks like a close-up on brushstrokes. Very cool.

Floyd, another masterpiece!
The chorus really struck home
"and i'm always there when she wants me i'm always there when she calls she's so much woman she can stand on her own but i' always there when she falls yes, i'm always there when she falls"
It reminded me of the days I was dating my wife! She has a terrible life when she was a teenager, but I digress.
As always everything was perfect.
Loved it.

Hi Floyd,
Doesn't matter how old music is. We listen to Beethoven, Bach, Chopin, Liszt etc. and enjoy the music, don't we?
This is a great song. Everything is good about it, music, vocals.

[I remember scratching the Double Fantasy album so it would just play the Lennon songs] You are remarkable and unique, and very encouraging to the rest of us. Thanks. When I have a long list of RealTracks, it almost always means I am using bits and pieces from what is listed to create a certain sound. Seldom (almost never) will I have them all going at once... I DO remember albums! I still listen too them all the time. Mostly newly released records. Sometimes just sampling them (if I don't really care for them) and sometimes saving them to my "library" (Apple Music) to listen again later. The only problem with that is that I keep hearing things and thinking "OOOHHH! I could recreate THAT sound in BIAB!" then move on to another and think the same thing...until I get so many new ideas I can't start on ANYTHING. Paralysis by Analysis.... (I also keep thinking I'll release more albums myself... but just too lazy to get that done ) floyd

Wow, you've been this good for over forty years, that's saying something. You know it's the lyrics I go for and this has some choice nuggets in it. I had just finished playing twenty games at wordle unlimited before listening to this, and this was more fun. As so many users here say, thanks for your presence on the forum. You're the guiding light.

FJ, Sounds awesome! Wonderful write and revival. You put a lot of emotion and musical thought in it. While it has some B.Joel flavor, sounds very original. Strong vocals. Mix is very crisp. So far this is your best tune of 2022 to my taste. Thank you for sharing. Misha. P.S. I was just learning to talk when you wrote this
