Hi All,

It's been a while since I've had any time to spend on the forum - since the pandemic I've had to prepare virtual lessons for the people I teach and that takes twice as long as teaching face to face. Also, everyone seems to have discovered an old guitar which they want servicing, so that they can start to play and so it goes on... so, at last I've got round to writing another blues, which is where I feel my roots are. The sax and backing vocals are realtracks, I'm playing the piano, Hammond and guitars and my erstwhile pal Eddie sent me over a super vocal to finish it off.

MY OLD FRIEND JACK DANIELS
It gets kinda lonely since you've been gone
So I turn to the blues and I play some old song
Like the "Crossroads" or the "Hard Road"
Just me and my old friend Jack Daniels

Sometimes it seems when you walked out that door
You trampled the dreams that were strewn on the floor
So I play out some old blues songs
Just me and my old friend Jack Daniels

I don't want your pity because I'm alone
I'm just too tired to argue and I know why you've gone
So I sit here playing blues songs
Just me and my old friend Jack Daniels

Many thanks to everyone who gives it a listen.

ROG.

Yeah!

When Roger wants to plays the blues, Dave wants to listen smile

Really top notch blues on display here, doesn't get any better. You surprised me with the sax solo, was expecting guitar, but it fits the song perfectly.

Guitar sounds great, love the intro and fills with the wha, and Eddie does a fine job on the vocal.

Good to see you back with a new one ROG, you have been missed!

Nicely done. I loved that sax when it came easing into the solo.

Eddy's vox are right on time too. Nice work on the instruments as well, on your part.

Great feel, Rog. Eddie sounds perfect, and I really like the interplay of guitar and sax. I love the slow blues, and can listen to songs like this all day. Right from the opening gong to the last piano note this is superb.

Enjoy whatever happens!

It's a pity Eddie is a former friend as his current vocal is pretty cool.
There's a little sibilance on the vocal that could be addressed.
The hihat's a little loud but not aggressively so. The drums seem almost mono.
Your lead work is cool - I enjoyed the wah particularly.
A ballad for the bottle always reminds me of Tom Waites' classic quote "I'd rather a bottle in front of me than a frontal lobotomy."

Blues! smile

You had me at that point. Everything else is icing: the vocals, the guitar work.

Plus, it's in 6/8!

The sax solo sounded great.

Nice work!

Vocal control, you say. Never heard of it. Is that some kind of ProTools thing?

Just in case anyone else is reading "erstwhile" as the old dictionary definition, I stress that in this case I'm using it in the modern colloquial form meaning longstanding. grin
Eddie and I are still good friends after over ten years of collaborating!

Interesting, I know I'm old but I've not known "erstwhile" as anything other than in keeping with the "old' definition...it seems most online dictionaries agree - the internet must be older than I thought.

Modern, colloquial could be ex or past I suppose.

Most importantly Electric Eddie is current and currently singing well.

I believe he used "erstwhile" in the context of "long term". Unless YOU were using the multiple meaning of erstwhile for sarcasm. He's my go-to guy!!

Dave, your mention of 6/8 made me smile because a long time ago a band I was in got into a HUGE debate as the theory aspect of "The End Of The Road" by Boyz To Men reared up as we were learning it. One guy insisted it was 3/4. Another said 6/8. Then I tossed my wrench in and said "I consider it compound meter. 3/4 contained inside of 4/4. So count it 123-223-323-423" and that was just more than they could understand.

And whilst I agree with Dave that it could easily be 6/8, it was actually programmed in Eddie's compound meter!

That Eddie compounds everything doesn't he grin grin grin grin

Seriously Rog + Eddie = masterpiece!

I love the blues and you two knocked it out of the park. Eddie's vocal is perfect. That wah blues guitar is perfect and that sax lead was icing on the cake.

Outstanding mix.

Loved it.
