Another Poet Slips Away

One written a while back (around the time of Leonard Cohen's death) but a bit relevant now.

I put together a video for anyone interested (first one) - was playing around with a new video editor.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kC2hLk4Q9XI

Lyrics & Vocals Leon

I played guitar and sang a little.

The Band
RealTracks in style: ~2475:Bass, Acoustic, HeldSimple Ev 085
MIDI SuperTracks in song: 2089:Piano, Solo-Accompaniment PopBalladJohn Ev 110
RealTracks in style: 2692:Organ, Rhythm ModernPopSlowMike Ev 075

Another Poet Slips Away

Another poet slips away
Another voice of reason gone
Another prophet fading into silence
The hope that we depended on
Fear that it will soon be gone
Didn’t bear the weight of our reliance

Stand your ground or run away
Easy now for you to say
Hard to win when everyone is cheating
In all the places life is cheap
love for it runs no less deep
Speak your mind and take another beating

How long have I been asleep
How bitter are the tears I weep
How long must I suffer here in silence
How long have I been asleep
How bitter are the tears I weep
How long must I suffer here in silence

Tell the tyrant ‘do your worst!’
And may your memory be cursed
Love is more important than survival
A lifeline for the powerless
Promise them they will be blessed
Praying for the day of his arrival

I can only do my best
All my sins have been confessed
How can I arrest this downward spiral
How long have I been asleep
How bitter are the tears I weep
Another evening drowning in the silence

How long have I been asleep
How bitter are the tears I weep
Another evening fading into silence

A previously unpublished novel has come to light and is being released very soon...seems there's life in the dead poet yet.
I saw him on his last Oz tour - pure magic and played a few songs from my favourite album too.

This is really sweet...the lead work REALLY works, the band rides behind the vocal and the lyrics flirt with religiosity in the way Laughing' Lenny so often did...from his songs and poems one would be hard pressed to pin his faith down or lack of it even.

Lovely song and Leon delivers in spades.

Cheers

Nice! A melancholy song with a fitting vocal and arrangement.

My only complaint is there are a lot of time the music overwhelms the vocal.

Vocal control, you say. Never heard of it. Is that some kind of ProTools thing?

Thanks David. While I'm not hearing that at my end in case it's a speaker issue I've uploaded a version with a slightly louder vocal.

Peter & Leon,

EXCELLENT job on the video. It is worth watching. Nicely paced with good transitions and images that work (the piano, drums and guitar inclusions work well, too).

The mix used with the video is really good. I had no trouble catching ALL the lyrics. Leon's vocal is excellent.

An excellent write.

Good use of BIAB. Beautiful added guitar.

Y'all should be proud. One of your best!

This forum has, invariably, wonderful songs on it. But: every so often, a masterpiece comes along. This is one of those times. The song's a classic, the video is moving and thought-provoking, the performance is spot on. I will listen again and again to this one - thank you so much for sharing it.

Love the lyrics. Beautifully deep thoughts, Leon. Man, you guys are good together Peter & Leon. This is a good good song, and I know Leonard Cohen would smile with pride at this wonderful gift of his life. You guitar sings to the heavens, Peter.

Enjoy whatever happens!

Hi Peter and Leon.

This is powerful writing and equally powerful listening.

I love well written songs where the lyrics stand tall on centre stage. Super writing!

Leon, your delivery is perfect!

Peter, you've created the perfect backing for this fine work.

I really, really like this.
Noel
