This song was written by an old friend of mine from the Netherlands. Singer-songwriter Wim Wiltenburg.

Different From Today

I recorded this once before, way back in the early 90s with a four-track cassette recorder! I have to say Wim's original embellished guitar arrangement took a little bit of practice for me to master (if I ever really did master it...).

Now, many years later I have recorded it with BIAB Real Tracks. I used a piano as the basis and kept the arrangement simple. I think this emphasizes the song's strong melody.

Comments encouraged!

Rob

Lyrics

If you'd be leaving would you say
Would you turn around and walk away
Can you find some time
for the doubts that dwell my mind
It's getting harder to read between your lines

Am I noticed when I smile
Do you hear me when I cry
Do you know just what I say
when I'm asking you to stay
Is tomorrow different from today

When the night falls
and my back's against the wall
Can you hear my call
for loving you

Truth or dare is what we played
Memories are what we made
Nothing said and less is done
about the days that are long gone
The perfect song is never really sung

And when the night falls
and my back's against the wall
Can you hear my call
for loving you
For loving you

Hi Rob ...

You have perfectly captured simplicity's true elegance. A wonderful musical background that layers at just the right places to cradle the strength of the fabulous lyric. I'll keep it simple with that. It was a true pleasure to listen to.

Hi Rob.
I think it's a lovely, sweet song and simplicity works.

The only thing I didn't get was the first line,
"If you'd be leaving would you say". Say what?
Maybe its a typing error.

Great job and professionally done Rob. Reminds me a bit of John Denver.

For me there’s no better place in the band than to have one leg in the harmony world and the other in the percussive. Thank you Paul Tutmarc and Leo Fender.

Rob,

This is a beautiful song! Your vocal shines as always and it really carries the song! It's got a great classic folk/rock sound that would have fit right in Jim Croce's repertoire! Stellar mix also!

Thanks, Torrey

Rob...this is gorgeous...your vocal is an exquisite performance of a lovely tender love song...the piano and acoustic compliment each other perfectly...I agree with Torrey about the Jim Croce comparison...it's not hard to imagine you sitting on a concert stage beside a grand piano with guitar in hand delivering a masterful performance of this!

Hi Rob, man you did a great job with this. As always, a great mix - but IMHO the vocal on this is really what makes this song shine. Superb job! You may or may not have already tried, I wonder what it would sound with some light drums or other percussion, though I'd hate to lose that Jim Croce sound. Thanks for sharing!

Rob (and Wim)
Wow, what a tasteful ballad! Fantastic vocal performance. Excellent lyrics. Choruses take this to another dimension. Mix is super clear and listens very well. Enjoyed this a lot. Thank you for sharing.

Love songs all around...is it spring already?
Hehehe...

I just love this song! The sparse arrangement leaves a lot of room for your amazing voice.
And the chord progression directly before the chorus is pretty cool I must say smile

Al said, "You have perfectly captured simplicity's true elegance."
Exactly!

This is a perfect example of "Perfection is achieved, not when there is nothing more to add, but when there is nothing left to take away."

Everything comes together to create this classy song ... your fine performances, Wim's touching write and the excellent mix.

So well done!

Nothing to add that hasn't already been said.

This is - to me - the sort of song where I'm at a loss to explain what the song is actually saying, but the how of the song - the expression in the vocals and instruments - is perfect.

Vocal control, you say. Never heard of it. Is that some kind of ProTools thing?

Oh, please tell Wim I love this melody. You did a terrific job redoing this one, Rob. Of course I haven't heard the original, but this is beautiful.

Enjoy whatever happens!

Thanks for your comment, Vic!

No, it's not a typo but it may be because Wim is not a native speaker (and neither am I). We are from the Netherlands.

Saying something similar in Dutch would be: "Zou je het zeggen".
Somewhat literally translated to English that would be: "Would you say it".

That's likely not correct English. It would probably need to be: "What you say so".

Both the words "it" or "so" are not going to work if you consider the timing and rhythm of the lyric/song, I think...
