When I enter notation and find I'd prefer a different style, changing the style deletes the notation.

It's strange that I can find nothing in searches that covers this situation. Apparently I'm using wrong terminology, because this has to have bothered people before I came along.

So other than re-entering the notation after every style that I choose, what do I do?

Any guidance, including cluing me in if I'm not even using the proper terminology, would be greatly appreciated!

Which track are you entering the notation on?
If this is a RealTrack (green), then it will be overwritten when you generate the song.
The Melody and Soloist tracks are usually reserved for entering user notation.
You can freeze the track, by pressing the small asterisk character next to the track name. If frozen, the notation should not be affected by changing the Style.

What version of Band in a Box are you running? I remember that there was a build of a version that had this problem. You might want to check if you have the latest build of your version installed. You can find the latest patches in the support section of this website.

Thanks for responding! I'm using version 2022.

I didn't know you had to do anything other than clicking the Notation icon to enter your notes.

If something in Chapter 8 of the manual mentioned needing to preselect a track, it wasn't in the preliminary discussion there. I don't generally read whole chapters when I study. I take things step-by-step.

I have cataracts and glasses which don't correct well, though, so maybe I missed it... nah, I don't think there was anything there.

OK, so it looks like it defaulted to "Piano 2" for playing the notation.

The style I tried at first was "M_BZ128P.STY Slow 12/8 Blues - Solo Accoustic". It clashed with my music, so I tried another style, which erased my work.

So I'll try later today to pre-select a melody or soloist track. Haven't messed with those yet.

Thanks! Very much appreciated!

OK, got it. I guess I had something other than melody or soloist selected when I entered the notation. Got a little bit better grasp of that area today, poking around in there.

But I think I'm going to try a different route for entering notation. I don't like that configuration, frankly. It's too unlike what I'm used to - regular sheet music.

I found a little program called Denemo - haven't tried it yet. To see if that might be a better route, I poked out some notes in Musescore, saved it as midi, and imported it into a slot in Band in a Box. Easy!!

So I'll connect my good old Casio to the computer and play into Denemo and import that work into Band in a Box. Probably something a lot of you do, but this is all new to me.

Thanks again for your responses!

Ken,
Thanks for pointing out Denemo. I've never heard of it before, but it seems to be quite a useful music notation program, certainly a good tip for people who are looking for something like that and don't want to spend money on it.

AdimWit and Brille,

+++ HERE +++ is a link to the Denemo website for the benefit of other forum users.

Everyone, please note a security notice is displayed since the site is http instead of the now more common https. From the website:
Quote:
Denemo is a free music notation program for GNU/Linux, Mac OSX and Windows. Music can be typed in at the PC-Keyboard, played in via MIDI controller, or input acoustically into a microphone plugged into your computer’s soundcard.

One additional note: Denemo appears to be a mature program that has been in development for over a decade. The first release note is from 2013 while the latest is from March, 2022.

Jim Fogle:
Thanks for the warning notice! I download everything in Linux, and scan with ClamAV there, then scan in Windows 10 with Defender. But I admit to slacking off on these habits. Thanks for the little kick in the rear.

Brille:
Please keep people like myself updated on your experience with Denemo. I haven't even had a chance to install it yet.

As for Band-in-a-Box, up to now I've only used it for creating accompaniments for my sister, who because of the pandemic, hasn't been able to find a community band in her area. Her flute practice was suffering, and these cool backups I provide via Band-in-a-Box are in music styles that she admittedly enjoys more than the bands ever provided.

She and I have also been working on some children's book ideas of hers, of which I'll provide imaging from my 3D software. So I've been very busy. Hence, I am frustrated over not learning Band-in-a-Box as fully as I had hoped.

Denemo will hopefully be a good way to quickly get the notation created, better than MuseScore, which frustrates me beyond description. So again, your experience with Band-in-a-Box combined with Denemo could be a valuable source of info for the rest of us.
Thanks for your response!
Cheers,
-Ken
