Hi all, I recently got my hands on a couple rackmount effect units for free including a midiverb 2 and 4. I’ve never used any of this type of gear but I’m looking to build these into a guitar/synth/drum machine effect processing unit.
See now I’ve taken a sound technology course back in school for fun and I use Reason as my DAW so I understand signal flow and physical patchbays pretty OK but my confusion lies in inputting the audio source…
For example, every effect rack and patchbay I’ve seen has all the inputs in the back of the rack I’m guessing so keep all the cables out of the way right but like how about at the start of the signal chain? Like if I was to input my synth into the patchbay, there’s no way I have to plug it in through the back of the rack every time right? Like is there a front facing input that I can then route into the patchbay? I think this makes sense haha…
Could I just my audio interface? Input my synth into my audio interface and then use the outputs routed to the rear input of the patchbay, process that audio signal, and then send that final output to a mixer or back into my audio interface? What if I don’t want to use an audio interface and go purely dawless recording into a multitrack recorder.. how would I input my synth to the effect rack?
Thanks all I hope this makes sense

A Patchbay will allow you to have front facing inputs with rear outputs fed from the rear and cabled to the other rack effects inputs one to one . That's the same as using your audio interface inputs and outputs. With a stand alone multitrack recorder, connect into the multitrack preamps and use the aux sends and returns to route a signal out of the multitrack to the effect and the output of the effect to return the signal back to the multitrack to either a return or one/two of the multitrack inputs. The images of the attached patchbay show the input/output configuration. Patchbay images

I believe I had a MidiverbII back in the day. The one made by Alesis IIRC with 99 presets. That was a very nice sounding unit. I recall that at the time, the mixer I was using did not have any FX at all including no reverb..... so......
Currently, I run a studio that is completely, 100%, in the box. I sold all of my hardware gear to other folks and dove deeply into the box. At this point, all my FX are plugs, vsts, and other software based solutions from my DAW.

You can find my music at: www.herbhartley.comAdd nothing that adds nothing to the music. You can make excuses or you can make progress but not both. The magic you are looking for is in the work you are avoiding.

We have a couple Behringer Ultrapatch patchbays, they sure are handy. It's such a simple thing pice of kit .. and very handy for a studio with physical routing .. though it does add an additional layer of complexity initially, it also adds a lot of convenience.
I do not work here, but the benefits are still awesome Make your sound your own!
