While I was in Santa Fe N.M. this last summer, I met a street musician in the plaza and spent an

afternoon trading stories with him over a couple of beers. I posted a link to an interview I found.

This song is the end result of that meeting…

The Last Real Man

He’s the man on a horse

A silhouette against the sky

Riding on into the western sun

Yes he sure can sing

Who does this kind of thing

Even when they say it can’t be done

American nomad

Guitar on his back

Riding all the way across this land

Detroit to Santa Fe

Backroads and lost highways

I just met the last real man

He sang original cowboy songs

So it was hard to sing along

A cattle dog lay there by his side

They threw dollars in his pail

He could surely tell a tale

He was wild as the west one of a kind

American nomad

Guitar on his back

Riding all the way across this land

Detroit to Santa Fe

Backroads and lost highways

I just met the last real man

My given name’s John Wayne

Don’t want no fortune or fame

I just want to do what I do

When it stops being fun

I’ll tell myself I’m done

One last song and then I’m Through

American nomad

Guitar on his back

Riding all the way across this land

Detroit to Santa Fe

Backroads and lost highways

I just met the last real man

That a pretty good song, I like especially your choice of instrument and the arrangement.

Nice heavy riff fits this well.

Ryan Bingham, AKA Walker on Yellowstone fits the description of the guy you met. I'll bet that was an interesting discussion over the beers.

Johnny has a cool beard and seems to be a down to earth kind of guy as well. 2000 miles on horseback.... that's dedication to the trip.

Wow, what a story! Made for a great song. That beard alone would make for a good song. Nice work, Tom.

THAT'S LOUD on your website player & no volume control obvious.
Swaggering rock with an Appalachian flavoured banjo.
COOL story & song.

You had me right from that opening riff I think, Tom smile

Quite the backstory! And quite the character, I can imagine it must have been a great time trading stories with him.

Great stuff, Tom, very much enjoyed.

Well, maybe not the last but we could do with a few more in this fancy world.
Good sound if just a tad heavy guitar in the choruses.
I enjoyed that, Tommy.

Fascinating interview. And you brought that great feeling to this song, Tom. A wonderful story told in a great tribute song. I'd really like to hear his song about you. Way to strike up a conversation with a strange stranger, and turn it into something special.

Enjoy whatever happens!

Tom,

YOU are the complete package.
I was just complimenting Dave Bell on his Producer chops (Coast Of Sadness). All that applies to you (doubly).
You write and play at that same level.
Your Audio Engineering is so far past everyone else it isn't even funny.
You get an acoustic guitar sound that is to-die-for.
Electric and Bass POP. Drums, too.
Vocals stand loud and proud and tucked-in perfectly.

Excellence in all direction.

For me there’s no better place in the band than to have one leg in the harmony world and the other in the percussive. Thank you Paul Tutmarc and Leo Fender.

Wow. Big country song, great vocal, excellent mix, solid guitars...

"He sang original cowboy songs/so it was hard to sing along"

Ha! And a good write, too.

I see you picked up Waves BB Tubes - cool plugin.

That was a lot of fun. laugh

Hi Tom,

What a supercool countrysong you made Wonderful!
And all that with just a couple of beers and a good conversation.
That surely fits with the title...

I loved everything: the cool song, the cool vocals, guitars/band and your mixing skills.
Played it several times by now.

Cheers,
Hans
