I wrote this over the Christmas period which was cancelled owing to my wife contracting Covid.
Not sure if it's done, instrument wise.
My thanks to John Vaughan for giving me the first line of the chorus.

Lonely guys © Vic Arnold 2022
V1
A man needs some love and a sign from above when he's lonesome.
A house is home sweet home but can be a prison for some.
I loved a fine lady ... but now I have no one
I scratch my head, sometimes, wondering how come?
V2
Maybe I was too selfish ... for changing my old ways
Too busy to notice the pain that she hid in her heart.
Was it something I said on a cold, winter, grey day,
or something she didn't ... that broke us apart?
Ch.
Lonely guys ... make the best lovers
Maybe that's right or it's wrong.
But they'll always be grateful , unlike the others,
who'll use up your love 'til it's gone.
V3
I sent out a message in a bottle to sail on the high sea ... said:
"To those who'd come looking, put all your trust in the stars.
I'm thankful to anyone taking the time out to save me.
Asking for nothing but praying there's still life on Mars."

Vic...I always enjoy the tracks you construct and the style of music you perform to/with...this is no exception...the chorus is so well constructed and expressed...it's a simple yet logical premise "Lonely guys make the best lovers"...you sir are a poet and balladeer...the mandolins are the perfect accompaniment...this is a really nice song!

Vic—

Terrific write, really warm and sincere vocal. Mandolins are the stars here on the production side—they really take this to a high level. Great chorus and killer hoook. I think one of my favorites from you.

Nice acoustic sound. Your vocal's a great match with the sad lyrics.

And as Deej said - excellent mandolins.

Vocal control, you say. Never heard of it. Is that some kind of ProTools thing?

This is surely among your best but hard to say exactly where because you've done so many good songs. Everything came together really well on this, everything just fit so well. Great work, I really enjoyed it.

Great song and sound Vic. As others have mentioned the mando's are great here. I liked the reverb you put on it. A very good write and the melody you chose make it a very nice introspective song. I thought your "ooohs" in the background worked very well too.

Beautiful, somewhat sad, melancholic song, and I like your vocals a lot.

Good arrangement and mix ... however, I would probably replace the mandolin with a proper guitar grin

Thank you Firesong.
The line is John Vaughan’s. I just wrote around it.
It’s a fine compliment though and well appreciated.
A happy new year to all the lonely people.

Vic, great job taking John's idea and making a finished product from it. Good job on the delivery of the vocal. It oozes the emotion of the lyric. I enjoyed it. Thumbs up on the mandolin, Tom

Thanks, Tunemonger.
I always get mixed emotions when I hear the words “your best yet”. It sometimes implies that all that went before is a little inferior. I worry too much. :-)

The jangle and twinkles seems, in the 1st verse at least, an odd match for the tempo, vocal, melody & narrative.
Like bees buzzing, trying to push the tempo while the vocal melody rides the slow vibe.

Thank you Mr. Thomas.
I did wonder if the main mandolin was a little too busy. Still thinking.

Hi Ray.
Thanks for the input. The lyric is slightly tongue in cheek so I was thinking it needed a little bounce in the instruments. I'm still pondering that part.

Vic, I liked everything about this one.

You always write great songs and this one is one of your best.

Fantastic backing band - loved that mandolin.

Outstanding vocal and lyrics.

For me there’s no better place in the band than to have one leg in the harmony world and the other in the percussive. Thank you Paul Tutmarc and Leo Fender.
