FARTHER FROM THE TREEThis is a deeply personal song that I have held off on sharing for a while but have decided to go ahead with because I know many folks can relate! Although it may sound like there's a tinge of bitterness on my part, it's not the case, only regret! Some of the lyrics are drawn from my own experiences and some from other people I have known that have had parent/child relationship issues. Almost the entire chorus "dropped" into my mind one day while traveling to visit my friend Ron Helm for a writing session! Ron loved the idea, and we wrote it quickly. He contributed some key lines in the song. It's a much different type of song for me but it had to be done this way! BTW, we've had some interest in this tune and I believe it will be recorded by someone. Thanks for having a listen! T BIAB - 2364 Electro Flutes - Panned to the left at low volume mainly in chorus sections and verse 2 Keyboards and Drums - Toontrack products Me - Vocals, bass, guitars, piano fills and synths Farther From The Tree Words and music by Torrey Bliss and Ron Helm ©2022 Glass Gate Music BMI I am my father's son That can be said of me Yes, the apple doesn't fall Very far from the tree It's sad we never found Common ground for our beliefs It seems that we would always just Agree to disagree You were right, and yes, you were so wrong Oh, and so was I now I must break this chain That's bound me for so long Time marches on through fields of broken dreams I know you felt, I'm not the man that I should be Now, things that you would say and do I see them coming out of me Sometimes, I wish this apple could have rolled A little farther from the tree Sons and the Fathers Mothers and your daughters Has anyone but me ever felt this way I know humility's the answer Grudges are a cancer That never let the dark clouds fade away Time marches on past fields of broken dreams At times, I felt you weren't the man that I thought you should be Things that you would say and do I see them coming out of me Sometimes, I wish this apple could have rolled A little farther from the tree Still, I have hope that some sunny day That God will restore what we've thrown away Until then, in my heart, I'll be Believing somehow that you still love me Time marches on through fields of broken dreams At times, we knew we weren't the men who we were meant to be The very things that you would say and do Now they're coming out of me Sometimes, I wish this apple could have rolled A little farther from the tree

Torrey & Ron,
A powerful write. "Things that you would say and do I see them coming out of me Sometimes, I wish this apple could have rolled A little farther from the tree " Killer lines.
A really nice arrangement/production. Good vocal. Nice mix.
Good luck with it! fj

The intro had set me up to expect a classic Eagles sound but you played me well. The lyric/narrative is as on point as Old Man or Cat's in the Cradle though the verse/bridge before the final chorus throws a curve ball of sorts. I know that's your wheel house but I'd consider writing a slight alternative to that bit for a more secular performer. Everything about the song is fabulous TBness. You're a wonder.

Torrey...this is such a poignant and beautiful piece of music...the lyrics are so touching and terribly true for so many people..it could only have been written by a retrospective heart and an honest soul...I commend you for that...I love the keyboard work...the gentle ballad flow...your vocals are some of your best...I agree wholeheartedly with Floyd about the production/arrangement value and with Ray that "everything about the song is fabulous"!

Before I listened to it, I read the lyrics and damn, they are really good and strong. Even without the music, this would be a pretty good poem. And the song doesn't disappoint, I'm not surprised it's getting interest. So far my favorite of your songs.
I'd love to see this song take off...

You're right, Torrey. This is different than your "usual." One thing it has in common is how good good good it is. Love the title and the song idea. Cool piano, and all you do in there makes it all so much better. Very tasteful and a very satisfying mix. Outstanding heartfelt lyrics. Life isn't for regrets --only improvement, and, man, you have that in so many ways.

Torrey, this is great in every way. I love how the chorus moves from "I", to "you", then to "we". Masterful and deep.
https://soundcloud.com/user-646279677BiaB 2025 Windows For me there’s no better place in the band than to have one leg in the harmony world and the other in the percussive. Thank you Paul Tutmarc and Leo Fender.

This is a well written, well performed, heartfelt song. I happily echo all other comments....they stole my thunder on this one.
Hope all is well....back to it.

Hi Torrey Very touching song Has a very nice melody And your vocals work out the thoughtful theme very nicely Is of course a partly sad song for all to whom the lyrics apply. In any case very successful song Thank you for letting us hear it And good luck that the song becomes even more famous Many greetings Andi ;-)

Excellent hook and lyric, Torrey. The only sugg I have is to take the piano down a couple of db here and there where it overpowers the vocal.
Great stuff.

Man! This is right up there with your best, Torrey, and that's saying something!
Just an excellent write from you and Ron, and the performance is your usual high standard.
Great to read that it's generating some interest, I hope it gets recorded and becomes a hit, how cool would that be?
Very much enjoyed, and good luck!

Not what I expected, but I love it! You don't usually sing in the lower register, because my first thought about the vocal was "Who is this guy? He sounds really good! Time marches on through fields of broken dreamsGreat write, emotional vocal, excellent production. You and Ron knocked it out of the park!

Great song! But you're certainly not the only one who asks these questions. A famous Dutch singer-songwriter sings this song: Papa = Daddy https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8wxVTIB6qE4This is the translation of the lyrics: Papa I have the same eyes And I'm getting your features around my mouth I used to be short tempered You used to be short tempered But we have found our peace And we sit beside each other And we do not say a lot For everything you do I have the same ritual Daddy, I'm more and more like you I have the same hands And I'm getting your wrinkles in my skin You have your ideas I have my ideas And we wander in our thoughts But we always come back home The truth you used to look for And which you've never found I'm searching for her as well And in vain For as long as I'll live Because Daddy, I'm more and more like you In former days you could be strict And God, I've hated you at times But your words They're coming from my lips And I speak now The way you used to speak before I have a godless faith And I love each and every woman And perhaps I have become What you didn't want me to be at all But Daddy, I'm more and more like you You believe in God So you will go to heaven And I believe in nothing So we'll meet each other After death, after death Nevermore But Daddy, I love you more and more I have a godless faith And I love each and every woman And perhaps I have become What you didn't want me to be at all But Daddy, I'm more and more like you Daddy, I love you more and more Daddy, I'm more and more like you

Torrey, l love all your songs. This one is especially good. The lyrics and melody are fantastic. Great production and playing. Good luck with pitching it. It’s hard for me to imagine anyone singing this any better than you. Very moving, Tom
