A new song from Spirit Level.

The Other Side Of Silence

The Other Side Of Silence

distant dust cloud rider
could be a monster or a man
or a boy deciding which he`ll be
in the crazy caravan

its wickedness takes you alone
I still hear her last words
in the answers for all your asking
aren`t I the missing chord
on the other side of silence
its guns and swords

watching from the window
like a butterfly in glass
her arms wide forever
held breath of the past
so I lost her
to the other side of silence

in our a castle of quiet
we heard the prairie breeze blow
an army of soft heartbeats in the grass
worms moving down below

I starved her dream to feed my desire
I had to learn how to be
in the roar and glitter
standing on the sea
on the other side of silence
there`s no peace

watching from the window
like a butterfly in glass
her arms wide forever
held breath of the past
so I lost her
to the other side of silence

Love the production on this, and the drum sound, the EQ, the vocals, the mix, the lyrics, all of it.

It is a full, pounding, rich-sounding song.

Congrats!!

A strange song, but in a pleasant way.
At first I thought I wouldn't like it, but I listened, listened some more, and all the unexpected things you did kept me listening till the end.
Seems I like it smile

Robert,

This is outstanding. The production on this is pro-level and sound great coming through the speakers.

Awesome vocal and some of your finest writing.

"watching from the window
like a butterfly in glass
her arms wide forever
held breath of the past
so I lost her
to the other side of silence"

Great stuff!

Robert, this a great song.
Good vocal and lyrics.
Great backing tracks and mix.

The "watching from the window
like a butterfly in glass
her arms wide forever
held breath of the past
so I lost her
to the other side of silence"
part was brilliant!

Robert & Scott,
Very creative tune. Super unusual structure, almost abstract, but works very well together. Ace lyrics and vocals. Mix is very good, with exception of acoustic guitar, which is quite a bit on a left side. Somewhat distracts from listening. But that of course is a matter of taste. Excellent effort and thank you for sharing.

Misha.

Hi Robert and Scott,

Like most of the others say, it's a somewhat unusual song according to the instruments.
Your voice sounds very familiair and that means beautiful, fragile and strong (at the same time).
A surprise were the drums/ percussion. When I heard it in the first chorus I had two feelings: 'oh, very nice'for your vocals alone with them, and secondly 'no, it breaks down the subtlility of the song itself'. But at the end of the song my feelings were very positive. So that was a very good job and it made me learn to be patient with giving opinions...
And have I mentioned the lyrics. No, I didn't. It took me some time with my dictionary on my lap, so they musatbe beautiful too. At least they sound like that!

And Scott..., oh he can play so very well. I loved all he did. Didn't need to get patient on that ;-)

Probably my ears aren't that good like Misha's ears, but no accoustic was distracting me.

All in all, I really enjoyed your song!
Hans

So good. I heard this yesterday thanks to Scott's FB post. Sounds even better today. Your lyrics are always the best, Robert. They evoke such strong visuals in the mind. Excellent vocals, especially enjoyed the call-and-response kind of thing. Scott, your guitar always has such expression that perfectly matches the feel and mood of the song.

Enjoy whatever happens!

We enjoyed the textured arrangement to the rich imagery of the lyric.
It all had a dream like quality that stayed in our heads. smile

Those counterpoint harmonies sounded great with your lead, Robert.

Excellent band, mix and performance, Scott, and we were getting a Jefferson Airplane vibe, which is a good thing!

Way cool!

The guitar intro gave plenty of notice that this wasn't going to be a standard production. laugh

Interesting, and not too far out there.

Cool stuff to hear in this song - especially the harmonies on the chorus!

Vocal control, you say. Never heard of it. Is that some kind of ProTools thing?

Thanks very much for all those positives, Misha. I often struggle with mix balances now due to hearing loss, but we always bounce ideas back and forth, so I think we agreed on that guitar placement.

Hans,
I`m glad this won you over...eventually. A dictionary? Really?- perhaps pasting my strange language into Google Translate would be easier?
Thanks for listening and commenting.

Marty,
The chorus call/response wasn`t planned- I heard the possibility while doing the vocal demo and, as its a first, was fun to try.
I appreciate that you connected with the lyrics.

I really like the surreal, somewhat psychedelic, and other-worldly sound of this. The band and Scott's guitar are essential to create the unusual but intriguing production. Great listen. I like to read your lyrics before listening and let them stand on their own merit without the music. Chorus stands out.

I found this unexpected and off the beaten track in a good way.
The lyrics leave lots of room for interpretation.
Great job.

For me there’s no better place in the band than to have one leg in the harmony world and the other in the percussive. Thank you Paul Tutmarc and Leo Fender.

A masterpiece whose lyrics I don't understand (yet?) :-) It strikes a chord with my subconscious, though ... if that makes sense? I will listen again, and read the lyrics carefully - at the moment, it's like a blurred photo ... some bits in focus, for me, some not so much. But a superb first impression, despite my philistine-like mind ... as I said, the subconscious is responding, without the conscious knowing why. From a musical standpoint, a gigantic, immensely successful effort. BRAVI, Spirit Level!!!

Intriguing title - the story is nicely poetic, but quite sad. "distant dust cloud rider" is a great introduction.
Enjoyed the complex melody and the minor chording, Scott's melodies are simply beautiful.
Unusual arrangement, but it works, good use of instrument breaks.
Good vocals and those quivering backing vocals bring unexplainable sorrow.
Spirit Level songs are always treasure chests to explore.
