Hello forum friends. Been listening to some great stuff here the past few days. This is a song that Earl sang. I love his feel for these retro ballads!! Would love to hear what you think. Take care all. Greg

https://youtu.be/gKqKJCoYN_A

The band:

Bass 533
Organ. 2692
Drums. 12-8 Ballad
Piano.......can't figure this out....midi track through Komplete piano
Strings........Spitfire Abbey Road one orch
Background voices......Eastwest Hollywood backup singers

Missing You Tonight

There’s a voice in the wind tonight that only I can hear
It drifts past the others and whispers in my ear
And it sings to me a lonely song
That a broken soul would write
And reminds me how I’m missing you tonight

And I see a sad face, painted on the moon
In my mind I can trace the tears and feel heart in ruin
Oh, I guess it’s just our secret
My own solitary sight
To witness how I’m missing you tonight

Baby when you were mine
This world, she looked so fine
Like every day was wrapped up with a bow
But when I don’t have you around
Baby, all I feel is down
And the aching of a heart that can’t let go

There’s a train in the distance that I can barely see
When I hear that whistle blow, I know it’s just for me
Oh, that lonely sound just calls to me
As the train rolls out of sight
And reminds me how I’m missing you tonight

Hi, Greg.

Earl sounds great, as does the rest of the song. Love the strings, too.

My only issue is the female vocal at 1:40. Great vocalist, but (to me) the background vocals feel out of place in the foreground. Feel free to disagree. wink

It's always great to hear your songs!

Vocal control, you say. Never heard of it. Is that some kind of ProTools thing?

Greg,

This sounds great. Very cool song and yes Earl has an excellent sound.

Love the Abbey Road strings.

Very smooth sound, and Earl did a great job on the vocal (although it's odd hearing one of my favorite singers defer the role to another). With David's permission I will say the female voice is a good addition; it's like the sound of someone missed. Excellent band and composition. Very enjoyable listen, Greg.

Enjoy whatever happens!

Greg,

You are the all-star crooner of the forum IMO! Therefore, I was surprised to hear someone else singing your tune! He did a beautiful job with it! This one has you written all over it and I would like to hear your vocal on it also! IT's a beautiful song!

Thanks, TB

Greg and Earl, you did a fantastic job on this song.
Earl's vocal is a perfect match to Greg's arrangement.
I thought that the female voice sounded just fine.
Great mix.

HI Greg ...

What a gorgeous write! Your lyrics are always so dang good!

Earl did a super job on this, as he did on our song "When A Heart Cries". But I still miss the luxurious ambiance of your fabulous voice. I do agree with previous comments about the female voice being a little too much up-front in the mix. Still, this is a wonderful listen!

Great song and listen!!! Take care, my friend.

Alan

Wonderful song & performance.
Cool arrangement and narrative too.
As to the fem vox - I'm undecided - them being panned right was the thing that grabbed my attention. I'll probably be happier with further right or dead centre.
The main vocal is lovely but it seems hot in a few places...my device is set at 40% volume, utube is at about 80%, but the vocal strays into the red zone in my ears - & in digital terms that usually means that the take or mix is hot with some unpleasant artefacts creeping in - not loudly but there. It's possible that a VST/Plugin may be doing that clipping.
Nevertheless a wonderful song & performance.

Cheers

Sounds like from a time much older than me ... but I like it, I don't know why.
I think it's the poetry of the lyrics and vocals that I like, and the arrangement and production in general are pretty good.

Technically, I hear some artifacts in the main vocals, as if they were converted to mp3 during the process.
But I guess since no one else mentioned it, it's still okay.

I really like the melody. I miss the smooth tones of your voice, but Ray is also a fine vocalist and this song seems made for his vocal style. Well done!

Hi Greg,

This takes me right back to the 50's - very enjoyable.

Earl's vocals remind me of Michael McDonald (also a very good thing).

Excellent.

Best Regards
Nigel

Earl sounds a little like a more direct Luther Vandross. The song is so achingly beautiful. The female voice, I feel, is NOT out of place. Well done to all involved - superb job.

This has a lovely lyric and melody and the band sets the mood so well.

We agree with Nigel that Earl sounds a little like Michael McDonald but he phrases like you do, all good things! wink

The background vocals were a little startling initially but we got used to them.

Well done,

J&B

Greg,
Smooth soul ballad. Fantastic arrangement, and ace vocals by Earl and BGVs. Enjoyed it and thank you for sharing.
