David and Rachel Radio 7.19.23: CAN’T TAKE ME BACK

Rachel started this, lyrically, and I fiddled with just a few things, mostly in the chorus.

The music came to me almost immediately when I read the lyrics, which hit me hard. I love playing and singing this song, and I can’t get it out of my head. Regardless of what anyone might say, I just love singing and playing this, more than anything I can remember in quite a while. I guess it’s because I just love these lyrics.

Hope you like it.

CAN’T TAKE ME BACK

https://soundcloud.com/david-snyder-gigs3/cant-take-me-back

By Rachel Cintula and David Snyder

V1

Life moved past the one horse in this town
Stoplights are the only thing slowing people down
Highway goes through where the county fair used to be
And many folks have passed on who I’d like to see
The coach I knew retired from teaching in the game
A lot of folks don’t even know me by my family name

CH

See, it don’t matter which way I go
Highways or low ways, or the beaten paths I know
Gravel or pavement
Or a rough dirt track
These country roads can take me home
But man, they just can’t take me back

V2

Been told I’ve changed by folks I once called friends
I guess I have from the far off places that I’ve been
Like all these old fields my life’s become over grown
And I ‘m thankful when I get to my back to mama’s home
Where things were simple and I was my daddy’s son
And I could rest without worry when the day was done

CH

See, it don’t matter which way I go
Highways or low ways, those memories are gold
Gravel or pavement
Or a rough dirt track
These country roads can take me home
But man, they just can’t take me back

BR

If I knew then
what I now feel
I would have lived more in the present
Livin’ moments time can’t steal

CH

Cause it doesn’t matter
which way I go
highways or low ways
my heart knows one sad fact
Gravel or pavement
Or a rough dirt track
These country roads can take me home
But man, they can never take me back
never take me back

That is a good song. The best you've done yet as a team.

Good work on the writing

Well, that was an enjoyable listen. Great lyrics in the bridge especially. Really ties the rest together, as a good bridge should.

Right from the first line ("Life moved past the one horse in this town") these lyrics are outstanding. Great song, Rachel and David. Love that "These country roads can take me home
But man, they can never take me back
never take me back"

So well sung, David. It's obvious how much fun it was for you, and it fits your voice like glove. Your usual outstanding mix seems even better than usual --or maybe I say that because it took 3 spins for me to concentrate on it, the song's that good..

Enjoy whatever happens!

David and Rachel, IMHO these were the best lyrics you have ever written!

David, you did a great job on expressing those lyrics in your vocals, great job on that.

You have the perfect backing tracks and mix for this song.

Loved it.

Hi, David.

Good work by Rachel on the lyrics. As Marty already said, this bit's especially good as a payoff to the chorus:

These country roads can take me home
But man, they just can’t take me back

Nice singing, but the emoting at 1:20 in particular caught my ear.

There are places where the guitars feel more like a hootenanny instead of accompaniment - especially towards the end, but obviously that was the sound you were going for.

Fun listen.

Vocal control, you say. Never heard of it. Is that some kind of ProTools thing?

We can see why you love singing this song as it has a great lyric and melody. Excellent heartfelt vocal, sir.

There are lines in each verse and chorus that we love but these lines especially got our attention:

“If I knew then
what I now feel
I would have lived more in the present
Livin’ moments time can’t steal”

Ain’t that the truth!

Excellent collab and, WOW, gonna say it again ... what a lyric!

Terrific band, terrific narrative and a good performance.
Lots of builds and dynamics to keep me listening and the bridge crosses the Styx very nicely.

Cheers

Rachel & David ...

What a fabulous song! Can't think of one from you and Rachel I like any better. That lyric is solid gold. It can speak to just about anyone and be 100% true.

Great mix and vocal. Everything simply shines. A tip of the hat to both of you. Fabulous!
