We got the band back together again for a cover from Bob Dylan's Blood on the Tracks Album - 1974 (... tell the truth if you never heard this piece) grin. But you have to know Miley, right?

You're gonna make me lonesome when you go - Miley version

BassThumper on Bass and MusicStudent on vocals. Since the remaining band mates are paid pros they remain unnamed.

As always, comments and suggestions regarding all performance aspects, mix and master are appreciated.

I have included a picture of our "Chart" with lyrics below.

Also shared the BIAB.mgu file which was a starting point.

Nope, I have never heard that one before, but this version is really good!

Super vocal and mix.

Steve did a great job on the bass.

I really enjoyed this.

You two should be more collaborations.

Unclear if the pianist is a total beginner or a professional jazz player?

Mario, in 1974 when this released I had this album on auto-repeat on the turntable. Bobby was singing my truth. grin Thanks for kind words, glad you liked it and I am so happy to share it.

Steve and I are talking about expanding our horizons and pushing our boundries on a follow up project.

I never heard of this one either until Dan approached me a few days ago. I'd say his ice shanty and set of pipes are running on all cylinders!

And thanks for the kind words . . . could be my first song with no sour notes smile

For me there’s no better place in the band than to have one leg in the harmony world and the other in the percussive. Thank you Paul Tutmarc and Leo Fender.

There's something slightly odd ad the end of "the refrain":
You have chords for five bars posted but nine or ten bars play & there's some change at the end that doesn't quite come off.
Could it be that there's confusion over the F#sus as to whether it's 2 (F# G# C#) or 4 (F# B C#)?
Otherwise it cool, good fun and nicely mixed.

Hi Dan and Steve.

This is great!!! The mix is superb and your performances are fantastic. This would sit quite comfortably on some radio station's playlist.

Loved it smile

Ya could be a bit off - it was a challenge for me. I did the BIAB chord chart mostly by ear since Mileys Chords differed a bit from Bob's original. On top of that the BIAB version was only done Quick/dirty so it is not a "finished" version. I can say in my case much was done by ear.

I can tell you that Miley sings this with a heavy emphasis on the B Melodic Minor scale (i.e., Flat 3rd) since she interchanges the natural D and the D# freely. I tried to do the same.

Thanks for the input.

Here is what was available for Bob's original over the refrain/chorus:

What a great cover Dan! You did a mighty fine job on those vocals! Nice bass from Bass Thumper. And those other pros always deliver!

I love this song but had never heard Miley's cover. Just listened to it on Spotify and she is just amazing!

Keep on keeping on with the great music Dan!

I remember buying the record when it first came out way back when. Wore out a couple of copies of that one.

That was Eric Weissberg and the Deliverance band if I remember correctly.

One of my favorite bob recordings.

Nice job on the cover.

Cool. I'm not familiar with this Dylan song.

I listened with focus to the refrains after seeing Ray's comments. So what I hear is the bass doesn't resolve to the proper place in a timely manner on REALIZE in the first refrain. Everything else in there sounds fairly good on the first refrain. However, in the second refrain.... your vocal melody clashes with the chords and goes off the rails at.... You're gonna make me... which is the halfway point in the second refrain.

Shouldn't both of the refrains be the same melody wise and chord wise?

You need to work out a fix for the refrains.

Great feedback, we are considering sending this back to the band to reconcile these discrepancies. And yes, for me the refrains were the most difficult to fully articulate and reproduce and I can hear vocal imperfections related to pharsing and timing. crazy

Thanks

One way to work through this is to put the melody of the verses and the refrains, or choruses down in a fixed format such as playing it on a piano keyboard. Lay that over the music in it's own track so that it fits. You can then mute it or let it play as needed. NOW.... sing the proper lyric for the verses and choruses along with the melody line. Since it is "fixed" in place and is the same for each verse/chorus/refrain, it will keep you singing the right melody and in the right timing or phrasing. You will quickly see where you're going off the rails. You can then either fix the lyrics or the melody that you're singing to match what you should be singing.

I had a co-writer some time back who was a nit picker about the number of syllables in a line. It had to be consistent in each of the verses and follow the same pattern for each. Counting syllables is a quick, easy way to see if you're even in the ballpark before you go to the trouble of playing the melody into a track. Often, the syllable count will point you directly to the problem each time. One tiny syllable difference, can easily throw the entire thing out of whack and often does.

Hope that helps you get it on track.
