Baby Won't You Please Come Home

Another one in our Public Domain series.
"Baby Won't You Please Come Home" is a blues song written by Charles Warfield and Clarence Williams in 1919.
The song's authorship is disputed; Warfield claims that he was the sole composer of the song.
The song has been covered by many musicians and has become a jazz standard.
The first hit version was Bessie Smith's 1923 recording, which stayed on the charts for four weeks peaking at No. 6

Arranged and mixed by the 3 of us, Bud Mastered the song.

The Band

Janice Merritt - Vocals
Bud Merritt - Acoustic Bass
Peter - Guitar

Oh baby, won't you please come home?
'Cause your mama's all alone
I have tried in vain
Never no more to call your name
When you left, you broke my heart
Because I never thought we'd part
Every hour in the day you will hear me say
Baby, won't you please come home?
When you left, you broke my heart
Because I never thought we'd part
Every hour in the day you will hear me say
Oh baby, my baby
Baby, won't you please come home?
'Cause your mama needs some lovin'
Baby, won't you please come on home?

PB&J, good find on the song. It fits perfectly in your catalog. Janice’s world class vocals slide around the notes and allow the tear in her voice to caress the melody. The girl has a very big gift which is deserving of a much larger audience. Peter’s guitar squeezes out the fills and solo with just the right touch. Bud holds down the bottom and it is great to hear him dust off the old upright. Great mix per usual and another example of some very high performance and recording standards. Extremely well done, Tom

Peter, Janice & Bud,

Wow! This is a complete knockout... I know I say this a lot, but this vocal by Janice rivals any singer out there today. So much texture and emotion. None better!

Love the production and arrangement. Peter's guitar with those flute-like tones weaving in and around Janice is superb.

Bud, you need to play the acoustic bass more often - your tone and note placement is just so good.

Production as usual is pro-level and the best around. Also love the artwork.

Will be going back for several listens.

Another golden vocal and smooth guitar picking.
I'm not an expert in the genre but it all sounds right to me.

I don't know the original song, but what you've done with it is really, really good.
Janice, who can sing a whole opera with just one syllable, is of course the main attraction, but the way Peter and Bud support her without getting in the way is 100% professional.
Good stuff, kudos to all 3 of you!

Well that made our day and Peter's Australian night!
Your eloquent description of Janice's vocal put a BIG smile on her face. You are a master musician and producer and that makes your review very special.

Thanks for all bro

I can recall the original song, or at least a very old recording of this song.
I can, because I liked it back then. My father enjoyed all these Jazzy/Bluessy songs and played the records a lot.
So, in a way I was brainwashed as a child.

And now the song as played by you. I must start with Janice. she sings heavenly, exactly how Tom described it: her "world class vocals slide around the notes and allow the tear in her voice to caress the melody" (and I learned some more words...).
I also enjoy how Bud plays the acoustic baas. Is this the double bass, or in Dutch: Contrabas? Or an acoustic bass guitar? I couldn't hear so well which one it is.
And of course Peter on the guitar. Well he know's how to play all these genres. So the whole performance was lovely to listen to (of course...).

Good as it gets.

A lovely opening. Peter at his most musical best.

Janice. Perfection.

A "just right" Band.
A sweet mix.

The level of quality in this Showcase is amazing! (and growing every year).

Rated - a BIG Wow.

Everything I was thinking has already been said - much better than I would have expressed it.

You folks make some wonderful music - perfect example here. P & B - you fellas did a great job. But J's vocal gave all that talent you gentlemen have a terrific polish.

Simply great music!

A wondrous thing. The bass is fab...ab fab but everything in this is.
The BIAB contributions are on point, he guitar licks lick and bite, the bass marks the progression and the vocal - oh yeah.

Cheers

Well, at this point there's nothing original to say. REALLY enjoyed every aspect of this tune. Standards are a lot of fun but require thoughtful performances to keep them fresh. Kudos to everyone involved for an inspired take on this classic. Vocals, bass, guitar and BiaB parts all nest together perfectly. A real pleasure to listen to.

Thanks Vic. We don’t fret over genres. If we like it we like it. Not even sure what this is … blues, blues rock, jazz, 100 years old pop - who knows! 😀

Sorry, Peter. It seems I forgot the other part of my post. When Bud sent me a preview of this magnificent piece... well, here was my full reply.

oh, man, oh, man... Used the headphones and glad I did. It was almost at the 2-minute mark when I realized my mouth was open the whole time. Seriously I don't think that's ever happened. What a treat this is. Thanks so much, Bud. Good lord, that guitar is out-freakin-standin' front to back. Is that last acoustic strum Peter? I absolutely love how it starts out with Peter taking one --maybe especially cuz I know that Janice will soon follow, but Peter makes that anticipation a thoroughly enjoyable experience. THEN ---> when she DOES come out with that most incredible vocal... well, I'm on my 3rd listen... erased all the crazy stuff that spewed forth from my blown mind. Now, when Peter does post it, I'll just be real cool like, "Yeah, good one guys."

Bud, your bass sounds perfect. Perfect touch and taste, and you mixed it like Goldilocks would've wanted it.

Anyone remember Paul Harvey? Now you know the rest of the story. Good day!

Enjoy whatever happens!

Hi Peter, Janice and Bud.

By the end of bar 1, I knew that this was going to be a superb listen, but I had no idea just how 'superb' it would be. As I said on Soundcloud, this was exquisite listening. Everything about this fits perfectly. The production and the performances were 24 carat gold. Stunning music.

Janice, you OWN this genre.

Music doesn't get any better than this. Absolutely brilliant!
