Thank you! The three of us released an album of public domain songs; however most of them were obscure forgotten blues tunes from the 1920’s. But you are right when you taken on one like this that has been done by many artists it does take some consideration of where to go with it. We are glad it worked for you.

The BIAB contributions are on point, he guitar licks lick and bite, the bass marks the progression and the vocal - oh yeah.

Thanks Ray.

Peter and all the gang,

Everybody here is doing is really hitting the mark on this cover of the old tune! Hey, that Janice girl is pretty good (as if nobody hasn't noticed)! Great guitar work and production! It has the sound of an old school bluesy gospel song!

Thanks, TB

Sorry, Peter. It seems I forgot the other part of my post. When Bud sent me a preview of this magnificent piece... well, here was my full reply.

oh, man, oh, man... Used the headphones and glad I did. It was almost at the 2-minute mark when I realized my mouth was open the whole time. Seriously I don't think that's ever happened. What a treat this is. Thanks so much, Bud. Good lord, that guitar is out-freakin-standin' front to back. Is that last acoustic strum Peter? I absolutely love how it starts out with Peter taking one --maybe especially cuz I know that Janice will soon follow, but Peter makes that anticipation a thoroughly enjoyable experience. THEN ---> when she DOES come out with that most incredible vocal... well, I'm on my 3rd listen... erased all the crazy stuff that spewed forth from my blown mind. Now, when Peter does post it, I'll just be real cool like, "Yeah, good one guys."

Bud, your bass sounds perfect. Perfect touch and taste, and you mixed it like Goldilocks would've wanted it.

Anyone remember Paul Harvey? Now you know the rest of the story. Good day!

Thanks Marty for all of those most positive comments. They are supportive and much appreciated and Bud adds extra thanks for the bass comment.

Very nice work. The guitar complements a great vocal!

Janice, you OWN this genre.

Music doesn't get any better than this. Absolutely brilliant!

Hi Janice, Bud & Peter,

I can't believe I've never heard this song before. I looked it up on Youtube and there are literally hundreds of covers by almost every famous Jazzy Blues artist of the 20th century.
I particularly liked versions by Lena Horne, Dinah Washington (and believe it or not) Dean Martin. Some of my favourite artists (Satchmo, Leon Redbone and Sam Cooke) - I could not even recognize the song.

Anyway - well done for finding this classic and giving it a whirl - most interesting.

I must admit - I would prefer the vocals and guitar at twice the volume but that's just me.

Good effort.

Best Regards
Nigel

Hi Guys,

Please ignore my previous comments re volumes - Janice's vocals are a good level - maybe 50% more on the guitar to match the vocal volume.

Best Regards
Nigel

thank-you for posting the history of the tune. Very interesting. I can see why it became a standard. Yet you made it sound modern with the tastefully done mix, vocals, bass, & guitar too.
Way to go!

Thanks! We tried to make it sound fresh - at least with the blues rock genre. 😀

Thank you! Yeah occasionally Janice slides 😀 away from melismatic phrasing.
