Rather than only posting a link to a video, how about summarizing the video, and saying what you thought made it worth watching?

Thanks!

Vocal control, you say. Never heard of it. Is that some kind of ProTools thing?

This!

A couple of other forums I'm on, they call that a drive-by and a moderator will just lock the thread with a comment like "locked. Drive by."

Yes... it would really be helpful when you post links.... like you do... to give us a teaser as to why you think we should take the time to watch.

Most of the time I look at the link and pass on it. That was the case with this.... why spend the time?

"Jeeze Ward, you were a little rough on the beaver last night..."

One look at the pic tells me this is Ted Gioia who is well known in the industry as a premier music hisotrian and musicologist. If you know Ted, then nothing else really needs to be added to indicate the relavance of this video to this forum. If you don't know him, than you should view the first few minutes to see for yourself what he preaches. This specific video is a bit dated. He currently (last few days) has a interview with Rick Biato regarding AI in music which is extremely interesting and scary.

For more information on Ted Gioia, visit his website at http://www.tedgioia.com. His last book, Music: A Subversive History, was published by Basic Books in 2019.

Final Tour - Not with a Bang but with a wimper! Ended.

By that logic, people should just post all of Ted's videos on this thread. crazy

I'd already watched a 30 minute video earlier in the week with Ted, and so I'm already acquainted with who he is. What I would have liked to see was some explanation of why I should spend an additional 20 minutes of the week listening to Ted.

Here's how Ted summarizes his video:

Quote
We cannot trust these tech companies to preserve it. We have moved to the
streaming model. We no longer buy music. It isn't like a library we can go check out
whatever we want. I suggest that we need to re-examine this. We need to look at ways of revitalizing the physical album and we need to ask ourselves do we want to own or do we just want a stream. Because I would say that if we believe
we want to borrow music, music itself may be on borrowed time.

Still haven't watched the video.... But based on the summary.....

Own it. Buy the physical copy vs. Streams. Streams are convenient but with time, you tend to lose your paid for streams as you change devices or let your service go. I can pull my Iron Butterfly album off the shelf and take Innagoddadavida for a spin any time I feel like it or convert it to digital and put it on my device until I change devices and repeat the process..... If I own it.

So what? There's how many billion videos on YouTube? Have enough respect for people's time to suggest why this one is worth spending it on instead of just doing a drive by.

Nevermind that you don't actually own the music but are granted a license to use it under specific circumstances.

'Cuz academics gonna academic rather than just learn how to play....

You can't become a musician by reading books about play music anymore than you can become a heart surgeon by reading books about heart surgery.

Of course I don't know how heart surgeons practice, but I know what it takes to become a musician. And it ain't by reading books.

This last wave annoying people who have joined the last couple of years all want the microwave fast lane to becoming musicians really changed the flavor of these forums. I haven't wasted the time to check but I'd bet a choklit' shake that they have never even been into the real "music" forums, only the off topic section. The ChatGPT, Scaler, every AI gadget in existence people who think they "write" songs with no human input or musical acumen at all. Sneak in under the tend rather than buy a ticket. I will make a lot of people happy here very soon when I close this account and never return. If it wasn't for the half dozen people here I actually respect I'd have done it already.

Just practice a few hours every day when you would otherwise be reading the books and watching videos hoping you will learn by osmosis. There's no formula. Play your instrument.

Why own music? For me:
  • My LPs and CDs have higher fidelity than I can get streaming
  • I can be sure they will always be available. Some of what I like isn't mainstream, and that means it may be dropped by the pay-streaming networks
  • I can make a "mix tape" and play it in the car. Especially useful for long distance driving

Examples: The first Tchaikovsky Symphony #6 was conducted by Eugene Ormandy. Tchaikovsky reportedly wept when composing this, and it was boring.

Coming back from Tampa, I heard it on the college radio station, and it was a very emotional rendition, tempos dynamics and balance made it so you could hear him weeping. I stopped the car before I drove out of range of the station, then called the station. The conductor was Kurt Masur, and I bought that disc. I gave the Ormandy disc to Goodwill. I hope someone liked it.

I have the CD recorded live when I was in Prague of Dvorak's ninth.

Plenty more reasons like this.

Why do I not want to own these?
