just recently my pc has startted making a 'bloop' type noise which will come out on recordings. i've been in to settings and tuned off all notification noises but i still get it.

sounds like the notification noise you might get when emails are received but doesn't seem to relate to anything in my inboxes. any suggestions as to what i should turn off?

in the old days windows had system noises which one could assign to commands and keystrokes but windows 11 doesn't seem to have anything similar.

went into task manager and found skype and discord running in the background and stopped them in case they might be causing it but i get so few msgs that's not really likely.

Maybe one of your VSTs is in demo mode?

In Settings - Sound .. scroll down to Advanced Sound Options and look for App volume and device preferences.

If you find that screen, it's a lot like the one you described

SettingsSound.jpg (34.97 KB, 88 downloads)

I do not work here, but the benefits are still awesome

Facebook notifications just started making noise. I know I didn't approve that.

Two things come to mind: unregistered plugin, which you say isn't it, and something running in the background that you say you don't have.

At least, to rule out that second possibility, download the free utility DPC Latency Checker and run it for a minute or two. SPECIAL NOTE: In Windows 11, the baseline is 1000, so don't be surprised that all your readings are yellow. But if you get some regularly recurring red spikes, you can examine the cause.

thanks everyone. turns out it was either skype or discord running in the background - i thought I had stopped them but they were still there and shutting them down cured the problem. i don't use either at the moment but have in the past and they load automatically.

just like Matt's facebook it something they've decided to do on their own and i wish they hadn't!

Bob/All.
(and people new to music production might find the following interesting.)

i dont want to irk anyone but it baffles me why people try to do everything on one pc.
It's like trying to cram 100 visiting relatives into 2 bedrooms…lol ... .you're going to get problems.

Particularly as years back it was a given that music production pc's never see the net so problems werent encountered and no contamination could occur.
if anyone doubts me start a thread on gearspace.com where thousands of big and small studios hang out along the lines 'why do you keep your music production pc off the net'.

What really baffles me is dirt cheap powerful superbly refurbished off lease pc's for under 200 bucks or even less for the net can be had. eg..i have one pc for music production and another for the net.
cripes there are even new mini pc's on amazon with ssd etc etc for 150 bucks..

if one is shrewd…for under 600 bucks total one can get the superb hp z or lenovo refurb off lease workstations with superb xeon processors (which some daw software developers use) for music production (note xeons are used by many big studios) PLUS a tablet and a chromebook or a refurb i5 laptop for the net and sketching out song ideas.
(eg if one is on holiday or away from home base.).

i just saw a hp z beast for music production with xeon and 64 gigs mem for 280 bucks and a nice lenovo lappie for 190 bucks. total cost under 500 bucks.
so for a total cost under 500 bucks one can have a superb solution.

In summary folks…divide and conquer.

If anyone new to music production and pg is reading this…read this series of tips i purposely set up in the pg tips section to i hope help someone buy a new pc for music production or optimize an old clunker.

i have two pcs - the family pc and the one i use for musice. but as this is the faster pc i do use it for things other than music. not normally a problem but this blooping noise just appeared. had i got the luxury of a music only pc i'd still probably use it for video production too.

but yuor advice is appreicated even if I can't take it OM!

Herre's another example related to yours: Zoom. It used to be that if you existed a meeting, Zoom closed. Done.

Now, though, something called Zoom Workplace stays loaded even if you End the Meeting and close that window. At least it is visible in your System Tray, but there are still two choices, and you have to do Quit Zoom rather than Close Window.

The new reality: lots of stuff runs in the background that you didn't expect.

I've played a lot of bloopers in my days as a musician, but never thought to blame the computer. Usually I blame the saxophone. wink
