Background:I got to thinking a few months back what might be missing in my bass playing portfolio and I realized that a walking bass line was missing. So I embarked on a little side collab journey and found it wasn’t so "little". This is perhaps the most difficult bass line I’ve ever worked on, because blues really isn’t my favorite genre and a walking line is constant motion. Nonetheless, I’m glad I tackled it. When I’m too old to play anymore it should be satisfying to look back on what I attempted. I’m not sure I’d call this a “song” per-se, it’s more the result of learning and self-study; a demo exercise if you will. Comments are always welcome. From a BiaB perspective, this song is why I asked about custom endings in this thread. Post 812776 I never could get BiaB to do this classic blues ending so I did my best on my keyboard and on my bass. You've done a great job, Bass Thumper. It's good to push ourselves, no? And you've succeeded so well. I was a little surprised by the sudden (to me) stop at 1:11, but, otherwise, I enjoyed your "demo" Great end result

Well Steve put another notch in that bass of yours! You have mastered the walking bass! The other tracks sound great also. Loved that break! Super mix.

Great bass playing and mixing!
As an aside, I used to have a Korg CX-3 many years ago, and I still kinda miss it.

Very cool! Spent a couple of decades working on jazz guitar chord melody techniques, and the walking bass line was by far both the hardest and the most fun. But once you understand it, it's like riding a bicycle, as they say. Sounds like you're on your way!

Yeah, if you want to grow, you have to definately push yourself, and I did a lot of pushing on this one. I envy those where it just comes naturally. Hi Steve,
I'm a Blues fan. And a huge fan of walking bass lines. I used to play a lot of Western Swing and many of them have walking bass lines. When I'm putting a song together, the bass line is the critical element for me most of the time. For me, the bass and drums are what "drives" a song. Ya did good!
Best to you,
Alan

As an aside, I used to have a Korg CX-3 many years ago, and I still kinda miss it. Hey Simon, Thanks for the kind words. What we actually have is the Korg Krome EX, which has a ton of voices built-in; strings, brass, percussion, organs and more. The CX-3 is one voice I really like. I find BiaB, the Krome, my DAW, my drum pad and my bass to be one heck of a fun team

Well done. Walking blues was 2nd cab of the rank for me when I took up bass. 1st cab was just pedaling on the root and playing the changes. Next was the classic walking 12 bar bass...just the basic box thing. though learning the myriad permutations of a 12 bar progression took longer, (I was actually writing a 12 bar roadhouse blues tune yesterday!). I managed that soon enough but no one explained the change necessary for minor chords so I powered through years with a bit of dissonance until someone pulled me aside and taught me about flat thirds etc. It's a journey but learning everyday is the way.

Cool, Steve. I like your progression --bass playing and chords. Good timing on the lines. I like hearing some swing in there like the drummer is doing --you know, the swing 8ths as passig tones, some skip-feel. Well, you can check this genre off your list, although I encourage further explorations. You're good at it.

I now have a real appreciation for those that have mastered it. Ever watch a toddler wobble a few steps on both feet and then fall? That's me with walking bass

Hey Alan, Actually I'm a blues fan too but not too much of this sub-genre. I resonate more with Joe Bonamassa, Gary Moore and Clapton. I appreciate your listen and positive review. The bass and drums may be the "foundation" or "engine" but boy do I love that bouncy piano!

It may have been a lot of work for you, but it was a lot of fun for me. You made it sound as though I was in your living room watching you jam, and it was fun! I hope you don't give up on this genre, you did a good job IMHO.

Many thanks Ray. As for the dissonance, I'm sure there is ample quantity of that in my playing. You are spot on when you say "It's a journey but learning everyday is the way." Not only is the learning rewarding, but it's a huge dementia buster; you got to keep your wetware wet I knew a guy that was bent of memorizing the alphabet backwards to keep his wetware wet, I told him, "Man! Just take up music, it's a whole lot more fun!"
